El documento audiovisual en las emisoras de televisión: selección, conservación y tratamiento
Analysis of the audiovisual material’s peculiarities and its management in television information units. According with the aims of the television information centers: conservation and treatment, the main approaches for the selection of audiovisual messages are considered and some thoughts about their content analysis with a view to their retrieval are carried out
Library and Information science graduates from Spain-professional training and workforce entry
p. 355-369Professional training and workforce entry profiles of Library and Information Science graduates from Spain are analysed. For this purpose 105 alumni who had graduated from the Library and Information Science (LIS) Diploma course at the University of León between the years 1993 and 2007 were surveyed and the re-sults analysed in order to identify further professional training undertaken, pro-fessional profiles, and professional career paths. These results were compared with those obtained from a series of interviews conducted with information profes-sionals employed in León, and with results of another survey of professionals working in other regions in Spain. The aim was to improve the LIS degree curricu-lum at the University of León.S
Audiovisual and Multimedia Content in the Curriculum for Librarianship Studies at the University of León in Spain
p. 234-240Within the framework of its programmes in Librarianship and Information Studies, the University of León provides a course whose syllabus is aimed at giving an awareness of audiovisual and multimedia documents. The second-year course in ‘Analysis of Document Content’ deals with the treatment of documentary messages with a view to retrieval.S
Audiovisual and multimedia contents on the curriculum of Library an Information Science at the University of Leon (Spain)
The University of Leon, inside the Studies of Library an Information Science, lectures two
subjects which contents are addressed to the knowledge of audiovisual and multimedia
documentation.
The purpose of the subject Analysis of Documental Content is the treatment of the documental
messages and how to retrieval them. The third session is focused on the representation and the
retrieval of sound, visual, audiovisual and multimedia documents. Before approaching the
documental analysis of the audiovisual document, it has to be exposed the peculiarities of the
sound and iconic codes. Then, we introduce the students in the analysis of the audiovisual
documents, as well as mixed image-sound, diachronic and non decodificable documents, directly
through the senses. Finally, the peculiarities of the digital document are taught, where it is very
important its characteristics of multimedia, text integrator, image and sound. The separation
between content and support makes that these documents, besides mixed (different codes), be
distributed (in many files) and be dynamic (easily modified). These characteristics involve new
necessities of treatment that are outlined as corollary of this subject. The subject Multimedia Documentation has as a main goal to introduce the students in the
elements of the multimedia documentation; that is, the analysis, treatment, conversion and
management of sound, image and video documents, used as information transmitter or
knowledge transmitter elements. In a first session, there’s an introduction to the materials, to the
associated hardware elements, and to the management and obtaining of the characteristics of the
integrating elements in a multimedia environment. In a second session it is established the
techniques of the model of multimedia documentation, where the student learns to integrate the
different elements that he will employ in the practical development. The basic models that are
used are the ones addressed to the interface, to the provisional characteristics and hyperlinks.
Finally, multimedia applications are made, and they allow to prove what was done during the
model process
Resource Discovery Services versus OPACs in Information Searching
In order to learn more about the strengths and weaknesses of Resource Discovery Services (RDS) and Online Public Access Catalogues (OPAC), we selected three universities from Spain which met the following requirements: 1) they taught Library and Information Science Studies, since our expertise in this scientific field would enable us to determine the relevance of the results retrieved, and 2) they had implemented different tools. We conducted several subject and author searches in RDS and OPAC, with the overall objective of exploring the efficiency of the search process and the relevance of the results retrieved when using each tool. The specific objectives were: to determine the comprehensiveness of the relevant results retrieved in a parallel search of OPAC and Resource Discovery Services; to analyze these results; to identify the filter functions for selection in RDS and OPAC; to determine the ease with which the results could be refined and/or the search could be widened by making use of facets, indexes, or advanced search features; and to assess the implementation and usefulness of recommendations of related documents and user opinions/reviews in the form of tags, comments and ratings
E-books in Spanish academic libraries
P. 86-95This study aims to explore the current presence of e‐books in the collections of Spanish academic libraries, from the viewpoint of the contents on offerS
An analysis of the use of Electronic Journals in a Spanish Academic Context: Developments and Profitability
P. 181-195This article studies themodels of consumption of the academic communities of five Spanish universities
with regard to the use of contents distributed by four major providers of electronic journals from the
time at which subscriptions were first taken until 2010. Similarly, the authors undertook an initial
approach to assess the value of the financial investment in such subscriptions on the basis of data from
the Spanish universities of Leon and of VigoS
E-science and open access repositories in Spain
p. 363-371Purpose – The purpose of this article is to highlight the role of science repositories in the
development of e-science. It aims to provide an overview of the open access collections currently
operating in Spain.
Design/methodology/approach – This paper is an examination of the tools, type of contents,
coverage and aims of the digital research collections generated by Spanish academic bodies.
Findings – There is only a limited development of institutional repositories, although it is possible to
detect a growing tendency to create them. At the present moment, these digital collections seem
principally to be seeking visibility for scientific output such as theses, journals, work in progress,
preliminary results and other fringe or unconventional literature, without currently making use of
academic teaching and learning materials or corpora relating to the cultural heritage.
Practical implications – It would be desirable for government to become involved in encouraging
open access within a new model for academic communication. It would appear crucial for the
repositories aimed at spreading knowledge of scientific research to set in place mechanisms for
rigorous peer assessment, so as to ensure the quality of the scholarly work deposited.
Originality/value – This paper considers the role of science repositories in the development of
e-Science. The availability of resources for e-science, the need to support the compilation of repositories
of information in electronic format and the access to digitized content is a matter of maximum priority
for any national science policy. Designing a new model for academic communication requires
collaboration from the authorities, from universities, from librarians and also support from researchers
themselves.S
