Equation of motion and subsonic-transonic transitions of rectilinear edge dislocations: A collective-variable approach
A theoretical framework is proposed to derive a dynamic equation motion for
rectilinear dislocations within isotropic continuum elastodynamics. The theory
relies on a recent dynamic extension of the Peierls-Nabarro equation, so as to
account for core-width generalized stacking-fault energy effects. The degrees
of freedom of the solution of the latter equation are reduced by means of the
collective-variable method, well known in soliton theory, which we reformulate
in a way suitable to the problem at hand. Through these means, two coupled
governing equations for the dislocation position and core width are obtained,
which are combined into one single complex-valued equation of motion, of
compact form. The latter equation embodies the history dependence of
dislocation inertia. It is employed to investigate the motion of an edge
dislocation under uniform time-dependent loading, with focus on the
subsonic/transonic transition. Except in the steady-state supersonic range of
velocities---which the equation does not address---our results are in good
agreement with atomistic simulations on tungsten. In particular, we provide an
explanation for the transition, showing that it is governed by a
loading-dependent dynamic critical stress. The transition has the character of
a delayed bifurcation. Moreover, various quantitative predictions are made,
that could be tested in atomistic simulations. Overall, this work demonstrates

Advantages of a Modular Mars Surface Habitat Approach
Early crewed Mars mission concepts developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) assumed a single, large habitat would house six crew members for a 500-day Mars surface stay. At the end of the first mission, all surface equipment, including the habitat, -would be abandoned and the process would be repeated at a different Martian landing site. This work was documented in a series of NASA publications culminating with the Mars Design Reference Mission 5.0 (NASA-SP-2009-566). The Evolvable Mars Campaign (EMC) explored whether re-using surface equipment at a single landing site could be more affordable than the Apollo-style explore-abandon-repeat mission cadence. Initial EMC assumptions preserved the single, monolithic habitat, the only difference being a new requirement to reuse the surface habitat for multiple expedition crews. A trade study comparing a single large habitat versus smaller, modular habitats leaned towards the monolithic approach as more mass-efficient. More recent work has focused on the operational aspects of building up Mars surface infrastructure over multiple missions, and has identified compelling advantages of the modular approach that should be considered before making a final decision. The impact of hyperhidrosis on patients' daily life and quality of life : A qualitative investigation
Background: An understanding of the daily life impacts of hyperhidrosis and how patients deal with them, based on qualitative research, is lacking. This study investigated the impact of hyperhidrosis on the daily life of patients using a mix of qualitative research methods. Methods: Participants were recruited through hyperhidrosis patient support groups such as the Hyperhidrosis Support Group UK. Data were collected using focus groups, interviews and online surveys. A grounded theory approach was used in the analysis of data transcripts. Data were collected from 71 participants, out of an initial 100 individuals recruited. Results: Seventeen major themes capturing the impacts of hyperhidrosis were identified; these covered all areas of life including daily life, psychological well-being, social life, professional /school life, dealing with hyperhidrosis, unmet health care needs and physical impact. Conclusions: Psychosocial impacts are central to the overall impacts of hyperhidrosis, cutting across and underlying the limitations experienced in other areas of life.Peer reviewe
Architectural Concept and Evaluation of a Framework for the Efficient Automation of Computational Scientific Workflows: An Energy Systems Analysis Example
Scientists and engineers involved in the design of complex system solutions use computational workflows for their evaluations. Along with growing system complexity, the complexity of these workflows also increases. Without integration tools, scientists and engineers are often highly concerned with how to integrate software tools and model sets, which hinders their original research or engineering aims. Therefore, a new framework for streamlining the creation and usage of automated computational workflows is introduced in the present article. It uses state-of-the-art technologies for automation (e.g., container-automation) and coordination (e.g., distributed message oriented middleware), and a microservice-based architecture for novel distributed process execution and coordination. It also supports co-simulations as part of larger workflows including additional auxiliary computational tasks, e.g., forecasting or data transformation. Using Apache NiFi, an easy-to-use web interface is provided to create, run and control workflows without the need to be concerned with the underlying computing infrastructure. Incommensurable worldviews? Is public use of complementary and alternative medicines incompatible with support for science and conventional medicine?
Proponents of controversial Complementary and Alternative Medicines, such as homeopathy, argue that these treatments can be used with great effect in addition to, and sometimes instead of, ?conventional? medicine. In doing so, they accept the idea that the scientific approach to the evaluation of treatment does not undermine use of and support for some of the more controversial CAM treatments. For those adhering to the scientific canon, however, such efficacy claims lack the requisite evidential basis from randomised controlled trials. It is not clear, however, whether such opposition characterises the views of the general public. In this paper we use data from the 2009 Wellcome Monitor survey to investigate public use of and beliefs about the efficacy of a prominent and controversial CAM within the United Kingdom, homeopathy. We proceed by using Latent Class Analysis to assess whether it is possible to identify a sub-group of the population who are at ease in combining support for science and conventional medicine with use of CAM treatments, and belief in the efficacy of homeopathy. Our results suggest that over 40% of the British public maintain positive evaluations of both homeopathy and conventional medicine simultaneously. Explanatory analyses reveal that simultaneous support for a controversial CAM treatment and conventional medicine is, in part, explained by a lack of scientific knowledge as well as concerns about the regulation of medical research
The Structure of the Oxygen-rich Supernova Remnant G292.0+1.8 from Chandra X-ray Images: Shocked Ejecta and Circumstellar Medium
We present results from the observation of the young Galactic supernova
remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on
board the {\it Chandra X-ray Observatory}. In the 0.3 8 keV band, the high
resolution ACIS images reveal a complex morphology consisting of knots and
filaments, as well as the blast wave around the periphery of the SNR. We
present equivalent width (EW) maps for the elemental species O, Ne, Mg, and Si,
which allow us to identify regions of enhanced metallicity in the SNR.
G292.0+1.8 is bright in O, Ne, and Si; weaker in S and Ar; with little Fe. The
EW and broad-band images indicate that the metal-rich ejecta are distributed
primarily around the periphery of the SNR. The central belt-like structure has
normal solar-type composition, strongly suggesting that it is primarily
emission from shocked circumstellar medium rather than metal-rich ejecta. We
propose that the belt traces its origin to enhanced mass loss in the star's
equatorial plane during the slow, red supergiant phase. We also identify thin
filaments with normal composition, centered on and extending nearly
continuously around the outer boundary of the SNR. These may originate in a
shell caused by the stellar winds from the massive progenitor in the red/blue

Scaling Up Mental Health Services in Zambia: Challenges and Opportunities Reported in an Education Project.
yesThe need to increase the capacity of developing countries to meet the mental health needs of their populations is widely acknowledged. This article examines some of the challenges associated with a British Council DelPHE project aimed at strengthening the capacity of mental health educators to prepare the mental health workforce in Zambia for a shift from an institutional to a community-based model of care. The analysis draws on data from two focus groups in which the participants were drawn from college educators who had taken part in workshops intended to enhance curriculum alignment to ensure that the education and training provided for clinical officers (psychiatry) and mental health nurses was "fit for purpose." In particular, the article highlights their perspectives on some of the tensions in focusing on mental health as opposed to broader health care and in ensuring appropriate opportunities for practice or field placements. The continuing impact of stigma and limited resources available for mental ill-health is acknowledged within the wider context of inequities in mental health care. Findings of this evaluation may be applicable to other sub-Saharan contexts, but should be understood only within the Zambian context
Pain and analgesic use associated with skeletal-related events in patients with advanced cancer and bone metastases
PURPOSE: Bone metastases secondary to solid tumors increase the risk of skeletal-related events (SREs), including the occurrence of pathological fracture (PF), radiation to bone (RB), surgery to bone (SB), and spinal cord compression (SCC). The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of SREs on patients' pain, analgesic use, and pain interference with daily functioning.
METHODS: Data were combined from patients with solid tumors and bone metastases who received denosumab or zoledronic acid across three identically designed phase 3 trials (N = 5543). Pain severity (worst pain) and pain interference were assessed using the Brief Pain Inventory at baseline and each monthly visit. Analgesic use was quantified using the Analgesic Quantification Algorithm.
RESULTS: The proportion of patients with moderate/severe pain and strong opioid use generally increased in the 6 months preceding an SRE and remained elevated, while they remained relatively consistent over time in patients without an SRE. Regression analysis indicated that all SRE types were significantly associated with an increased risk of progression to moderate/severe pain and strong opioid use. PF, RB, and SCC were associated with significantly greater risk of pain interference overall. Results were similar for pain interference with emotional well-being. All SRE types were associated with significantly greater risk of pain interference with physical function.
CONCLUSIONS: SREs are associated with increased pain and analgesic use in patients with bone metastases. Treatments that prevent SREs may decrease pain and the need for opioid analgesics and reduce the impact of pain on daily functioning
