Validation of the communications link analysis and simulation system (CLASS)
CLASS (Communication Link Analysis and Simulation System) is a software package developed for NASA to predict the communication and tracking performance of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) services. The methods used to verify CLASS are described. The usefulness of a software tool such as CLASS depends strongly on the reliability and accuracy of the results it produces. For this reason, considerable attention was paid to validation throughout the CLASS development
Orbiter global positioning system design and Ku-band problems investigation, exhibit B, revision 1
The LinCom effort in supporting the JSC study of the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) on the space shuttle and in Ku-band problem investigation is documented. LinCom was tasked to evaluate system implementation, performance, and integration aspects of the shuttle GPS and to provide independent technical assessment of reports submitted to JSC regarding integration studies, system studies and navigation analyses

Variational calculations for K-few-nucleon systems
Deeply bound KNN, KNNN and KNNNN states are discussed. The effective force
exerted by the K meson on the nucleons is calculated with static nucleons. Next
the binding energies are obtained by solving the Schrodinger equation or by
variational calculations.
The dominant attraction comes from the S-wave Lambda(1405) and an additional
contribution is due to Sigma(1385). The latter state is formed at the nuclear
peripheries and absorbs a sizable piece of the binding energy. It also
generates new branches of quasi-bound states. The lowest binding energies based
on a phenomenological KN input fall into the 40-80 MeV range for KNN, 90-150
MeV for KNNN and 120-220 MeV for K-alpha systems. The uncertainties are due to
unknown KN interactions in the distant subthreshold energy region.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figur
Shuttle Ku-band signal design study
Carrier synchronization and data demodulation of Unbalanced Quadriphase Shift Keyed (UQPSK) Shuttle communications' signals by optimum and suboptimum methods are discussed. The problem of analyzing carrier reconstruction techniques for unbalanced QPSK signal formats is addressed. An evaluation of the demodulation approach of the Ku-Band Shuttle return link for UQPSK when the I-Q channel power ratio is large is carried out. The effects that Shuttle rocket motor plumes have on the RF communications are determined also. The effect of data asymmetry on bit error probability is discussed
Cumulative structure function in terms of nucleonic wave function of the nucleus
The structure function of the nucleus in the cumulative region is
studied in terms of nucleon degrees of freedom. At high the resulting
expressions are presented as a sum of contributions from few-nucleon
correlations. Two-nucleon correlations are studied in some detail. Spin
variables are averaged out. In the region the structure functions are
calculated for the relativistic interaction proposed by F.Gross {\it et al}.
They are found to fall with faster than the exponential. For Carbon at
, where the method is not rigorously applicable, they turn out to be
rougly twice larger than the experimental data.Comment: text and 2 figures in LaTex, 7 figures in P
Shuttle/TDRSS modelling and link simulation study
A Shuttle/TDRSS S-band and Ku-band link simulation package called LinCsim was developed for the evaluation of link performance for specific Shuttle signal designs. The link models were described in detail and the transmitter distortion parameters or user constraints were carefully defined. The overall link degradation (excluding hardware degradations) relative to an ideal BPSK channel were given for various sets of user constraint values. The performance sensitivity to each individual user constraint was then illustrated. The effect of excessive Spacelab clock jitter on the return link BER performance was also investigated as was the problem of subcarrier recovery for the K-band Shuttle return link signal
The Impact of Insurance on the Law of Torts
An experimental study of "Model-on-Demand" (MoD) identification is made on a pilot-scale brine-water mixing tank. MoD estimation is compared against semi-physical modeling techniques using identification data generated from a systematically designed m-level Pseudo Random Sequence (PRS) input. The estimated models are the basis for evaluating the usefulness of MoD-based Model Predictive Control (MPC). For this application, MoD-MPC is shown to provide better performance at high bandwidths compared to a linear MPC controller
Agriculture, food security, nutrition and the Millennium Development Goals
"...Today, 1.1 billion people live on less than one US dollar per day (the internationally recognized poverty threshold)—430 million in South Asia, 325 million in Sub-Saharan Africa, 260 million in East Asia and the Pacific, and 55 million in Latin America. Too many children live lives characterized by hunger and illness, and all too often succumb to early death. Moreover, another 1.6 billion people live on between one and two dollars per day, often sliding temporarily below the one dollar per day threshold. To enable all these people to live in dignity, the eight goals to achieve by 2015 are: 1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger 2. Achieve universal primary education 3. Promote gender equality and empower women 4. Reduce child mortality 5. Improve maternal health 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases 7. Ensure environmental sustainability 8. Develop a global partnership for development." from TextMillenium Development Goals ,HIV/AIDS ,Gender issues ,Equality ,Nutrition ,Impact ,
The 24-Cell and Calabi-Yau Threefolds with Hodge Numbers (1,1)
Calabi-Yau threefolds with h^11(X)=h^21(X)=1 are constructed as free
quotients of a hypersurface in the ambient toric variety defined by the
24-cell. Their fundamental groups are SL(2,3), a semidirect product of Z_3 and
Z_8, and Z_3 x Q_8.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, 3 table
