Validation of the inverted adsorption structure for free-base tetraphenyl porphyrin on Cu(111)
Utilising normal incidence X-ray standing waves we rigourously scrutinise the “inverted model” as the adsorption structure of free-base tetraphenyl porphyrin on Cu(111). We demonstrate that the iminic N atoms are anchored at near-bridge adsorption sites on the surface displaced laterally by 1.1 ± 0.2 Å in excellent agreement with previously published calculations
Production of Biocellulosic Ethanol from Wheat Straw
Wheat straw is an abundant lignocellulosic feedstock in many parts of the world, and has been selected for producing ethanol in an economically feasible manner. It contains a mixture of sugars (hexoses and pentoses).Two-stage acid hydrolysis was carried out with concentrates of perchloric acid, using wheat straw. The hydrolysate was concentrated by vacuum evaporation to increase the concentration of fermentable sugars, and was detoxified by over-liming to decrease the concentration of fermentation inhibitors. After two-stage acid hydrolysis, the sugars and the inhibitors were measured. The ethanol yields obtained from by converting hexoses and pentoses in the hydrolysate with the co-culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia stipites were higher than the ethanol yields produced with a monoculture of S. cerevisiae. Various conditions for hysdrolysis and fermentation were investigated. The ethanol concentration was 11.42 g/l in 42 h of incubation, with a yield of 0.475 g/g, productivity of 0.272 gl ·h, and fermentation efficiency of 92.955 %, using a co-culture of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Pichia stipite
No Longer a Sign of Weakness? Media Reporting on Mental Ill Health in Sport
This study analysed media framing of athletes who have suffered mental ill health. The mass media play a crucial role in shaping public attitudes and perceptions surrounding mental health and the present study aimed to examine the media reporting of athletes’ mental ill health, and to further explore how this reporting has changed over time. We examined the reporting of elite athletes in three United Kingdom media outlets between January 2000 and December 2019, identifying 75 athletes from 26 different sports. From analysis, four themes were developed to consider the content of media reporting and how it has changed over three time phases. The analysis revealed that media reporting of mental ill health has increased over time, and changes were observed in terms of the specific terminology used, with greater depth in the articles, such as journalists speaking to other professionals to construct the articles. This study contributes towards our growing understanding of the reporting of mental ill health by providing empirical evidence of the increased attention to the topic and increasingly responsible reporting within the media
International genome-wide meta-analysis identifies new primary biliary cirrhosis risk loci and targetable pathogenic pathways.
Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a classical autoimmune liver disease for which effective immunomodulatory therapy is lacking. Here we perform meta-analyses of discovery data sets from genome-wide association studies of European subjects (n=2,764 cases and 10,475 controls) followed by validation genotyping in an independent cohort (n=3,716 cases and 4,261 controls). We discover and validate six previously unknown risk loci for PBC (Pcombined<5 × 10(-8)) and used pathway analysis to identify JAK-STAT/IL12/IL27 signalling and cytokine-cytokine pathways, for which relevant therapies exist

Does F4TCNQ Adsorption on Cu(111) Form a 2D-MOF?
The results of a
quantitative experimental structural investigation
of the adsorption phases formed by 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7′,8,8′-tetracyanoquinodimethane
(F4TCNQ) on Cu(111) are reported. A particular objective
was to establish whether Cu adatoms are incorporated into the molecular
overlayer. A combination of normal incidence X-ray standing waves,
low-energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, complemented by dispersion-inclusive
density functional theory calculations, demonstrates that F4TCNQ on Cu(111) does cause Cu adatoms to be incorporated into the
overlayer to form a two-dimensional metal–organic framework
(2D-MOF). This conclusion is shown to be consistent with the behavior
of F4TCNQ adsorption on other coinage metal surfaces, despite
an earlier report concluding that the adsorption structure on Cu(111)
is consistent with the absence of any substrate reconstruction
