Magnetic fields and differential rotation on the pre-main sequence
Maps of magnetic field topologies of rapidly rotating stars obtained over the last decade or so have provided unique insight into the operation of stellar dynamos. However, for solar-type stars many of the targets imaged to date have been lower-mass zero-age main sequence stars. We present magnetic maps and differential rotation measurements of two-higher mass pre-main sequence stars HD 106506 (~10 Myrs) and HD 141943 (~15 Myrs). These stars should evolve into mid/late F-stars with predicted high differential rotation and little magnetic activity. We investigate what effect the extended convection zones of these pre-main sequence stars has on their differential rotation and magnetic topologies. ©2009 American Institute of Physic
Evolution of Atmospheric O2 Through the Phanerozoic, Revisited
An oxygen-rich atmosphere is essential for complex animals. The early Earth had an anoxic atmosphere, and understanding the rise and maintenance of high O2 levels is critical for investigating what drove our own evolution and for assessing the likely habitability of exoplanets. A growing number of techniques aim to reproduce changes in O2 levels over the Phanerozoic Eon (the past 539 million years). We assess these methods and attempt to draw the reliable techniques together to form a consensus Phanerozoic O2 curve. We conclude that O2 probably made up around 5–10% of the atmosphere during the Cambrian and rose in pulses to ∼15–20% in the Devonian, reaching a further peak of greater than 25% in the Permo-Carboniferous before declining toward the present day. Evolutionary radiations in the Cambrian and Ordovician appear consistent with an oxygen driver, and the Devonian “Age of the Fishes” coincides with oxygen rising above 15% atm.

A common founding clone with TP53 and PTEN mutations gives rise to a concurrent germ cell tumor and acute megakaryoblastic leukemia
We report the findings from a patient who presented with a concurrent mediastinal germ cell tumor (GCT) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Bone marrow pathology was consistent with a diagnosis of acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (AML M7), and biopsy of an anterior mediastinal mass was consistent with a nonseminomatous GCT. Prior studies have described associations between hematological malignancies, including AML M7 and nonseminomatous GCTs, and it was recently suggested that a common founding clone initiated both cancers. We performed enhanced exome sequencing on the GCT and the AML M7 from our patient to define the clonal relationship between the two cancers. We found that both samples contained somatic mutations in PTEN (C136R missense) and TP53 (R213 frameshift). The mutations in PTEN and TP53 were present at ∼100% variant allele frequency (VAF) in both tumors. In addition, we detected and validated five other shared somatic mutations. The copy-number analysis of the AML exome data revealed an amplification of Chromosome 12p. We also identified a heterozygous germline variant in FANCA (S858R), which is known to be associated with Fanconi anemia but is of uncertain significance here. In summary, our data not only support a common founding clone for these cancers but also suggest that a specific set of distinct genomic alterations (in PTEN and TP53) underlies the rare association between GCT and AML. This association is likely linked to the treatment resistance and extremely poor outcome of these patients. We cannot resolve the clonal evolution of these tumors given limitations of our data
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey Reverberation Mapping Project: No Evidence for Evolution in the M-sigma Relation to z~1
We present host stellar velocity dispersion measurements for a sample of 88
broad-line quasars at 0.10.6) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Reverberation Mapping (SDSS-RM) project. High signal-to-noise ratio coadded
spectra (average S/N~30 per 69 km/s pixel) from SDSS-RM allowed decomposition
of the host and quasar spectra, and measurement of the host stellar velocity
dispersions and black hole (BH) masses using the single-epoch (SE) virial
method. The large sample size and dynamic range in luminosity
(L5100=10^(43.2-44.7) erg/s) lead to the first clear detection of a correlation
between SE virial BH mass and host stellar velocity dispersion far beyond the
local universe. However, the observed correlation is significantly flatter than
the local relation, suggesting that there are selection biases in high-z
luminosity-threshold quasar samples for such studies. Our uniform sample and
analysis enable an investigation of the redshift evolution of the M-sigma
relation free of caveats by comparing different samples/analyses at disjoint
redshifts. We do not observe evolution of the M-sigma relation in our sample,
up to z~1, but there is an indication that the relation flattens towards higher
redshifts. Coupled with the increasing threshold luminosity with redshift in
our sample, this again suggests certain selection biases are at work, and
simple simulations demonstrate that a constant M-sigma relation is favored to
z~1. Our results highlight the scientific potential of deep coadded
spectroscopy from quasar monitoring programs, and offer a new path to probe the

Effect of New Zealand Blackcurrant Extract on Isometric Contraction-Induced Fatigue and Recovery: Potential Muscle-Fiber Specific Effects
New Zealand blackcurrant (NZBC) extract has shown performance-enhancing effects during cycling, running and sport climbing. We examined effects of NZBC extract on (1) voluntary and twitch force of the quadriceps femoris muscles during repeated isometric contraction-induced fatigue, (2) twitch force during recovery and (3) muscle fiber-specific effects. Familiarized recreationally active males (n = 12, age: 24 ± 5 yrs; height: 180 ± 5 cm; body mass: 89 ± 11 kg) performed sixteen, 5-s voluntary maximal isometric contractions (iMVC) separated by 3-s rest. Twitch force was recorded before, during the 3-s rests and 5-min recovery. Supplementation consisted of 7-days intake of NZBC extract (600 mg∙day−1 containing 210 mg anthocyanin) in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover design with a 14-days washout. NZBC extract allowed for greater force in the first quartile of the iMVCs. Twitch force at baseline was 12% higher with NZBC extract (p = 0.05). However, there was no effect of NZBC for twitch force during the 16-iMVCs and recovery. Based on the maximum post-activation potentiation during the placebo 16-iMVCs, four subjects were classified of having a predominant type I or II muscle fiber typology. In type II, NZBC extract provided a trend for increased MVC force (~14%) in the first quartile and for type I in the fourth quartile (~10%). In type I, NZBC extract seemed to have higher twitch forces during the fatiguing exercise protocol and recovery, indicating increased fatigue resistance. New Zealand blackcurrant extract affects force during repeated maximal isometric contractions. Future work on mechanisms by NZBC extract for muscle fiber-specific fatigue-induced force responses is warranted
Integrated TiO2 resonators for visible photonics
We demonstrate waveguide-coupled titanium dioxide (TiO2) racetrack resonators
with loaded quality factors of 2x10^4 for the visible wavelengths. The
structures were fabricated in sputtered TiO2 thin films on oxidized silicon
substrates using standard top-down nanofabrication techniques, and passively
probed in transmission measurements using a tunable red laser. Devices based on
this material could serve as integrated optical elements as well as passive
platforms for coupling to visible quantum emitters.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
The Black Hole Mass of NGC 4151: Comparison of Reverberation Mapping and Stellar Dynamical Measurements
We present a stellar dynamical estimate of the black hole (BH) mass in the
Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 4151. We analyze ground-based spectroscopy as well as
imaging data from the ground and space, and we construct 3-integral
axisymmetric models in order to constrain the BH mass and mass-to-light ratio.
The dynamical models depend on the assumed inclination of the kinematic
symmetry axis of the stellar bulge. In the case where the bulge is assumed to
be viewed edge-on, the kinematical data give only an upper limit to the mass of
the BH of ~4e7 M_sun (1 sigma). If the bulge kinematic axis is assumed to have
the same inclination as the symmetry axis of the large-scale galaxy disk (i.e.,
23 degrees relative to the line of sight), a best-fit dynamical mass between
4-5e7 M_sun is obtained. However, because of the poor quality of the fit when
the bulge is assumed to be inclined (as determined by the noisiness of the
chi^2 surface and its minimum value), and because we lack spectroscopic data
that clearly resolves the BH sphere of influence, we consider our measurements
to be tentative estimates of the dynamical BH mass. With this preliminary
result, NGC 4151 is now among the small sample of galaxies in which the BH mass
has been constrained from two independent techniques, and the mass values we
find for both bulge inclinations are in reasonable agreement with the recent
estimate from reverberation mapping (4.57[+0.57/-0.47]e7 M_sun) published by

The Ionized Gas and Nuclear Environment in NGC 3783. I. Time-Averaged 900 ks Chandra Grating Spectroscopy
We present results from a 900 ks exposure of NGC 3783 with the High-Energy
Transmission Grating Spectrometer on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The
resulting X-ray spectrum has the best combination of signal-to-noise and
resolution ever obtained for an AGN. This spectrum reveals absorption lines
from H-like and He-like ions of N, O, Ne, Mg, Al, Si, and S. There are also
possible absorption lines from H-like and He-like Ar and Ca. We also identify
inner-shell absorption from lower-ionization ions such as Si_VII-Si_XII and
S_XII-S_XIV. The iron absorption spectrum is very rich; L-shell lines of
Fe_XVII-Fe_XXIV are detected, strong complex of M-shell lines, and probable
resonance lines from Fe_XXV. The absorption lines are blueshifted relative to
the systemic velocity by a mean velocity of -590+-150 km/s. We resolve many of
the absorption lines, and their mean FWHM is 820+-280 km/s. We do not find
correlations between the velocity shifts or the FWHMs with the ionization
potentials of the ions. Most absorption lines show asymmetry, having more
extended blue wings than red wings. In O_VII we have resolved this asymmetry to
be from an additional absorption system at ~ -1300 km/s. The two X-ray
absorption systems are consistent in velocity shift and FWHM with the ones
identified in the UV lines of C IV, N V, and H I. Equivalent width measurements
for all lines are given and column densities are calculated for several ions.
We resolve the narrow Fe_K\alpha line at 6398.2+-3.3 eV to have a FWHM of
1720+-360 km/s, which suggests that this narrow line may be emitted from the
outer part of the broad line region or the inner part of the torus. We also
detect a `Compton shoulder' redward of the narrow Fe_K\alpha line which

Diffusion of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training to Chinese Immigrants with Limited English Proficiency
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an effective intervention for prehospital cardiac arrest.
Despite all available training opportunities for CPR, disparities exist in participation in CPR training, CPR knowledge, and receipt of bystander CPR for certain ethnic groups. We conducted five focus groups with Chinese immigrants who self-reported limited English proficiency (LEP). A bilingual facilitator conducted all the sessions. All discussions were taped, recorded, translated, and transcribed. Transcripts were analyzed by content analysis guided by the theory of diffusion. The majority of participants did not know of CPR and did not know where to get trained. Complexity of CPR procedure, advantages of calling 9-1-1, lack of confidence, and possible liability discourage LEP individuals to learn CPR. LEP individuals welcome simplified Hands-Only CPR and are willing to perform CPR with instruction from 9-1-1 operators. Expanding the current training to include Hands-Only CPR and dispatcher-assisted CPR may motivate Chinese LEP individuals to get trained for CPR
