Finite time singularities in a class of hydrodynamic models
Models of inviscid incompressible fluid are considered, with the kinetic
energy (i.e., the Lagrangian functional) taking the form in 3D Fourier representation, where
is a constant, . Unlike the case (the usual Eulerian
hydrodynamics), a finite value of results in a finite energy for a
singular, frozen-in vortex filament. This property allows us to study the
dynamics of such filaments without the necessity of a regularization procedure
for short length scales. The linear analysis of small symmetrical deviations
from a stationary solution is performed for a pair of anti-parallel vortex
filaments and an analog of the Crow instability is found at small wave-numbers.
A local approximate Hamiltonian is obtained for the nonlinear long-scale
dynamics of this system. Self-similar solutions of the corresponding equations
are found analytically. They describe the formation of a finite time
singularity, with all length scales decreasing like ,

Transformation kinetics of alloys under non-isothermal conditions
The overall solid-to-solid phase transformation kinetics under non-isothermal
conditions has been modeled by means of a differential equation method. The
method requires provisions for expressions of the fraction of the transformed
phase in equilibrium condition and the relaxation time for transition as
functions of temperature. The thermal history is an input to the model. We have
used the method to calculate the time/temperature variation of the volume
fraction of the favored phase in the alpha-to-beta transition in a zirconium
alloy under heating and cooling, in agreement with experimental results. We
also present a formulation that accounts for both additive and non-additive
phase transformation processes. Moreover, a method based on the concept of path
integral, which considers all the possible paths in thermal histories to reach

Statistics of Dissipation and Enstrophy Induced by a Set of Burgers Vortices
Dissipation and enstropy statistics are calculated for an ensemble of
modified Burgers vortices in equilibrium under uniform straining. Different
best-fit, finite-range scaling exponents are found for locally-averaged
dissipation and enstrophy, in agreement with existing numerical simulations and
experiments. However, the ratios of dissipation and enstropy moments supported
by axisymmetric vortices of any profile are finite. Therefore the asymptotic
scaling exponents for dissipation and enstrophy induced by such vortices are

Insight into the role of TXNRD2 in steroidogenesis through a novel homozygous TXNRD2 splice variant.
OBJECTIVE
Adrenal cortisol production occurs through a biosynthetic pathway which depend on NADH and NADPH for energy supply. The mitochondrial respiratory chain and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) detoxification system are therefore important for steroidogenesis. Mitochondrial dysfunction leading to oxidative stress has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several adrenal conditions. Nonetheless, only very few patients with variants in one gene of the ROS detoxification system, Thioredoxin Reductase 2 (TXNRD2), have been described with variable phenotypes.
DESIGN
Clinical, genetic, structural and functional characterization of a novel, bi-allelic TXNRD2 splice variant.
METHODS
On human biomaterial, we performed whole exome sequencing to identify and RNA analysis to characterize the specific TXNRD2 splice variant. Amino acid conservation analysis and protein structure modeling were performed in silico. Using patient's fibroblast-derived human induced pluripotent stem cells, we generated adrenal-like cells (iALC) to study the impact of wild-type (WT) and mutant TXNRD2 on adrenal steroidogenesis and ROS production.
RESULTS
The patient had a complex phenotype of primary adrenal insufficiency (PAI), combined with genital, ophthalmological and neurological features. He carried a homozygous splice variant c.1348-1G>T in TXNRD2 which leads to a shorter protein lacking the C-terminus and thereby affecting homodimerization and FAD binding. Patient-derived iALC showed loss of cortisol production with overall diminished adrenal steroidogenesis, while ROS production was significantly increased.
CONCLUSION
Lack of TXNRD2 activity for mitochondrial ROS detoxification affects adrenal steroidogenesis and predominantly cortisol production

International audienceL'étude ici illustrée s'intéresse au comportement thermo - métallurgique - mécanique des alliages de Zr des tubes de gainage du combustible des Réacteurs nucléaires à Eau Pressurisée (REP), lors de transitoires à hautes températures (HT) en ambiance vapeur d'eau, simulant des conditions hypothétiques accidentelles (dites APRP). Il apparaît intéressant d'approfondir la connaissance des phénomènes métallurgiques et thermomécaniques mis en jeu lors de tels transitoires, en particulier vis-à -vis du comportement mécanique résiduel « post oxydation trempe ». Différentes teneurs en oxygène ont été incorporées dans l'alliage étudié, pour simuler la diffusion de cet élément dans le substrat métallique qui intervient lors de l'oxydation HT. Des caractérisations microstructurales par EBSD, MET, MEB... et des caractérisations mécaniques par essai de traction, mesures de constantes physiques... ont permis de décrire la microstructure et le comportement mécanique de la phase résiduelle la plus ductile – phase dite « ex-bêta » - résultant de l'oxydation HT des gaines en zircaloy-4
Reference procedures for the measurement of gaseous emissions from livestock houses and stores of animal manure.
In the ten years before the EMILI 2012 symposium, gaseous losses from animal farms became increasingly important in the m edia. The paradox of this tendency was the great number of publications, scientific or not, even though the emissions of most animal farms had never been measured. Therefor e, the development of reference tools to measure greenhouse gas and ammonia emissio ns was important. Such tools allow recognition and remuneration of the best pract ices and equipment. Accordingly, ADEME funded an international project associating several research and development organizations involved with the animal production chain. The project proposed an initial set of 18 procedures to measure ammonia and greenho use gas emissions from animal houses and manure stores. These were adapted to the diversity of animal farms found throughout the world. Some methods were compared duri ng a ?building? and a ?liquid manure? experiment. Results showed a high difference among methods (ca. 80%), much higher than the estimated uncertainty. Associat ing independent emission measurements, together with a mass balance of the system, is necessary for the reliability of further results. However, previously published references lack uncertainty estimates of measurements that conform to GUM 2008. In the coming years, this is one of the major concerns for measuring emission factor s. Uncertainty estimates should depend on the measurand (temporal: hourly, per batch, yearly; spatial: animal, house, national) and include the uncertainties associated with system representativity and temporal interpolation.Edited by Mélynda Hassouna and Nadine Guingand
Appendectomy during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy: a multicenter ambispective cohort study by the Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery and new technologies (the CRAC study)
Major surgical societies advised using non-operative management of appendicitis and suggested against laparoscopy during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hypothesis is that a significant reduction in the number of emergent appendectomies was observed during the pandemic, restricted to complex cases. The study aimed to analyse emergent surgical appendectomies during pandemic on a national basis and compare it to the same period of the previous year. This is a multicentre, retrospective, observational study investigating the outcomes of patients undergoing emergent appendectomy in March-April 2019 vs March-April 2020. The primary outcome was the number of appendectomies performed, classified according to the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) score. Secondary outcomes were the type of surgical technique employed (laparoscopic vs open) and the complication rates. One thousand five hundred forty one patients with acute appendicitis underwent surgery during the two study periods. 1337 (86.8%) patients met the inclusion criteria: 546 (40.8%) patients underwent surgery for acute appendicitis in 2020 and 791 (59.2%) in 2019. According to AAST, patients with complicated appendicitis operated in 2019 were 30.3% vs 39.9% in 2020 (p = 0.001). We observed an increase in the number of post-operative complications in 2020 (15.9%) compared to 2019 (9.6%) (p < 0.001). The following determinants increased the likelihood of complication occurrence: undergoing surgery during 2020 (+ 67%), the increase of a unit in the AAST score (+ 26%), surgery performed > 24 h after admission (+ 58%), open surgery (+ 112%) and conversion to open surgery (+ 166%). In Italian hospitals, in March and April 2020, the number of appendectomies has drastically dropped. During the first pandemic wave, patients undergoing surgery were more frequently affected by more severe appendicitis than the previous year's timeframe and experienced a higher number of complications. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy: the SICE (Societ\ue0 Italiana di Chirurgia Endoscopica e Nuove Tecnologie) network prospective trial on 1225 cases comparing intra corporeal versus extra corporeal ileo-colic side-to-side anastomosis
Background: While laparoscopic approach for right hemicolectomy (LRH) is considered appropriate for the surgical treatment of both malignant and benign diseases of right colon, there is still debate about how to perform the ileo-colic anastomosis. The ColonDxItalianGroup (CoDIG) was designed as a cohort, observational, prospective, multi-center national study with the aims of evaluating the surgeons\u2019 attitude regarding the intracorporeal (ICA) or extra-corporeal (ECA) anastomotic technique and the related surgical outcomes. Methods: One hundred and twenty-five Surgical Units experienced in colorectal and advanced laparoscopic surgery were invited and 85 of them joined the study. Each center was asked not to change its surgical habits. Data about demographic characteristics, surgical technique and postoperative outcomes were collected through the official SICE website database. One thousand two hundred and twenty-five patients were enrolled between March 2018 and September 2018. Results: ICA was performed in 70.4% of cases, ECA in 29.6%. Isoperistaltic anastomosis was completed in 85.6%, stapled in 87.9%. Hand-sewn enterotomy closure was adopted in 86%. Postoperative complications were reported in 35.4% for ICA and 50.7% for ECA; no significant difference was found according to patients\u2019 characteristics and technologies used. Median hospital stay was significantly shorter for ICA (7.3 vs. 9 POD). Postoperative pain in patients not prescribed opioids was significantly lower in ICA group. Conclusions: In our survey, a side-to-side isoperistaltic stapled ICA with hand-sewn enterotomy closure is the most frequently adopted technique to perform ileo-colic anastomosis after any indications for elective LRH. According to literature, our study confirmed better short-term outcomes for ICA, with reduction of hospital stay and postoperative pain. Trial registration: Clinical trial (Identifier: NCT03934151)
