Bei der Renovierung eines Fachwerkhauses in Wankum (Kreis Kleve, NRW) wurden im Sommer 2002 die alten luftgetrockneten Lehmziegel in den Gefachen restlos beseitigt. Dadurch wurden zahllose Brutkammern von Wildbienenarten, die lehmverfugte Gemäuer als Nistplätze besiedeln, zerstört und die Lebensgrundlage u.a. für eine individuenstarke Pelzbienenpopulation (Anthophora plumipes) wurde vernichtet. Improving the Sensory Capabilities of an Electromagnetic Guided Rotary Table for the Use in Machine Tools

Difficult-to-machine materials are still challenging the production industry. Examples are highly complex components of aircraft engines. Alongside innovative processes, also improved machine tool components are helping to comply with the demands of this task. This paper presents a swivel rotary table with an active magnetic bearing (AMB). Opportunities in machining through employing a workpiece-sided AMB are presented. The inherent capabilities to work as a sensor and actor as well as its stiffness and damping depend on the precise knowledge of the magnets characteristics. Therefore, a methodology to automatically identify the characteristic curve is presented

Deflection compensation on a force sensing mobile machine tool

Within this paper, a model based deflection compensation for a mobile machine tool prototype is presented. The model compensates the deflection of the tool center point (TCP) based on strain gauge measurements at the machines foot modules. The measured strains at each foot are used to calculate pose dependent gravitational forces as well as disturbance forces. These forces are then passed to the model. Hence, the model reconstructs the deflection of the TCP based on the measured forces at the foot modules

The local atomic quasicrystal structure of the icosahedral Mg25Y11Zn64 alloy

A local and medium range atomic structure model for the face centred icosahedral (fci) Mg25Y11Zn64 alloy has been established in a sphere of r = 27 A. The model was refined by least squares techniques using the atomic pair distribution (PDF) function obtained from synchrotron powder diffraction. Three hierarchies of the atomic arrangement can be found: (i) five types of local coordination polyhedra for the single atoms, four of which are of Frank-Kasper type. In turn, they (ii) form a three-shell (Bergman) cluster containing 104 atoms, which is condensed sharing its outer shell with its neighbouring clusters and (iii) a cluster connecting scheme corresponding to a three-dimensional tiling leaving space for few glue atoms. Inside adjacent clusters, Y8-cubes are tilted with respect to each other and thus allow for overall icosahedral symmetry. It is shown that the title compound is essentially isomorphic to its holmium analogue. Therefore fci-Mg-Y-Zn can be seen as the representative structure type for the other rare earth analogues fci-Mg-Zn-RE (RE = Dy, Er, Ho, Tb) reported in the literature.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, 2 table

Puesta en marcha de los criterios de EDS para el inventario de lugares de aprendizaje de EDS fuera de la escuela en Renania-Palatinado

Mithilfe einer zweistufigen Analyse wurden außerschulische Lernorte erfasst, die deutliche Bezüge zum Konzept einer Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) aufweisen. Dabei wurden selbst entwickelte BNE-Kriterien als methodisches Instrument in Form einer BNE Checkliste für außerschulische Lernorte operationalisiert. Die auf diesem Wege gewonnenen Daten liefern eine Grundlage für die Erstellung einer Datenbank von außerschulischen Lernorten mit BNE-Bezug. Eine Visualisierung der Daten zeigt folgendes räumliches Verteilungsmuster: Neben Landkreisen und kreisfreien Städten mit einer Vielzahl an BNE-Lernorten koexistieren Regionen mit Defiziten. Des Weiteren zeigt sich eine Häufung von BNE-Lernorten in stadt- und waldnahen Gebieten.With the help of a two-stage analysis, out-of-school places of learning were recorded that show clear references to the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In the process, self-developed ESD criteria were operationalised as a methodological tool in the form of an ESD checklist for out-of-school learning places. The data obtained in this way provides a basis for the creation of a database of out-of-school learning places with ESD relevance. A visualisation of the data shows the following spatial distribution pattern: In addition to districts and independent cities with a large number of ESD learning places, regions with deficits coexist. Furthermore, there is an accumulation of ESD learning sites in areas close to cities and forests.Con la ayuda de un análisis en dos etapas, se registraron los lugares de aprendizaje extracurriculares que muestran claras referencias al concepto de Educación para el Desarrollo Sostenible (EDS). En el proceso, los criterios de EDS elaborados por ellos mismos se hicieron operativos como herramienta metodológica en forma de lista de comprobación de la EDS para los lugares de aprendizaje extraescolar. Los datos obtenidos de este modo sirven de base para la creación de una base de datos de lugares de aprendizaje extraescolar con relevancia para la EDS. Una visualización de los datos muestra el siguiente patrón de distribución espacial: además de distritos y ciudades independientes con un gran número de plazas de aprendizaje de EDS, coexisten regiones con déficit. Además, se acumulan los lugares de aprendizaje de la EDS en las zonas cercanas a las ciudades y los bosques.Peer Reviewe

L’expansion en Allemagne des systèmes de production énergétique décentralisés est à l’origine de  ce que l’on appelle des paysages de l’énergie postmodernes. Les éléments principaux de ces paysages sont les technologies des énergies renouvelables qui affectent fortement l’environnement comme la société. Notre article discutera de ce nouveau phénomène en présentant le cas de la Rhénanie-Palatinat.The expansion of decentralized energy supply units in Germany increasingly produces so called postmodern Renewable Energy landscapes. The key element of these landscapes is renewable energy technology which fundamentally affects the environment as well as society. Crystal growth of copper-rich ytterbium compounds: The predicted giant unit cell structures YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25

Two new phases YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 are found as a result of careful phase diagram investigations. Between the congruent and peritectic formation of YbCu4.5 and YbCu3.5, respectively, the phases YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 are formed peritectically at 934(2)degC and 931(3)degC. Crystal growth was realised using a Bridgman technique and single crystalline grains of about 50-100 10^{-6}m were analyzed by electron diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Due to the only slight differences in both compositions and formation temperatures the growth of larger single crystals of a defined superstructure is challenging. The compounds YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 fit in Cerny`s (J. Solid State Chem. 174 (2003) 125) building principle {(RECu5)n(RECu2)} where RE = Yb with n = 4 and 3. YbCu4.4 and YbCu4.25 base on AuBe5/MgCu2-type substructures and contain approximately 4570 and 2780 atoms per unit cell. The new phases close the gap in the series of known copper-rich rare earth compounds for n = 1, 2 (DyCu3.5, DyCu4.0) and n = 5 (YbCu4.5, DyCu4.5)

Conflicts around Germany’s Energiewende: Discourse patterns of citizens’ initiatives

Especially since the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe (2011), Germany has expanded its renewably sourced energies. Nuclear power is to be phased out by 2022. What is central to federal policy is the expansion of wind-generated energy. Plans for new wind farms have, however, faced opposition. And the transportation of electricity from the windy north to the high-use south entails an expansion of the existing power grid, which also provokes conflict. The article scrutinises dominant patterns of discourse on these issues. Based on current discourse theory, the research sheds light on the argumentative power of citizens’ initiatives with respect to nature conservation, landscape, health and economics
