    Factors Associated with Occupational Accident at Palm Oil Plantation, Riau

    Background: An occupational accident is a sudden and unexpected accident caused by external factors due to which the employee suffers injuries. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 337 million accidents happen on the job each year, resulting, together with occupational diseases, in more than 2.3 million deaths annually. This study aimed to determine factors associated with occupational accident at palm oil plantation, Riau. Subjects and Method: This was a cross sectional study conducted at a palm oil plantation, Riau, North Sumatera, in May 2018. A sample of 50 workers was selected for this study. The dependent variable was occupational accident. The independent variables were human factors (age, gender, work duration, Protective Equipment or PPE, education), management factors (occupational health and safety, standard operational procedure, training and monitoring), and work environment factor. The data were collected by questionnaire and observation. The data were analyzed by a multiple logistic regression. Results: Human factor, management factor, and work environment factor, were simultaneously associated with occupational accident. Management factor had the highest effect. Conclusion: Human factor, management factor, and work environment factor, were simultaneously associate with occupational accident at palm oil plantation. Management factor had the highest effect.     Tracing the early development of harmful algal blooms with the aid of Lagrangian coherent structures

    Several theories have been proposed to explain the development of harmful algal blooms (HABs) produced by the toxic dinoflagellate \emph{Karenia brevis} on the West Florida Shelf. However, because the early stages of HAB development are usually not detected, these theories have been so far very difficult to verify. In this paper we employ simulated \emph{Lagrangian coherent structures} (LCSs) to trace the early location of a HAB in late 2004 before it was transported to an area where it could be detected by satellite imagery, and then we make use of a population dynamics model to infer the factors that may have led to its development. The LCSs, which are computed based on a surface flow description provided by an ocean circulation model, delineate past and future histories of boundaries of passively advected fluid domains. The population dynamics model determines nitrogen in two components, nutrients and phytoplankton, which are assumed to be passively advected by the simulated surface currents. Two nearshore nutrient sources are identified for the HAB whose evolution is found to be strongly tied to the simulated LCSs. While one nutrient source can be associated with a coastal upwelling event, the other is seen to be produced by river runoff, which provides support to a theory of HAB development that considers nutrient loading into coastal waters produced by human activities as a critical element. Our results show that the use of simulated LCSs and a population dynamics model can greatly enhance our understanding of the early stages of the development of HABs.Comment: Submitted to JGR-Ocean

    HPLC Method for Determination of Rifaximin in Human Plasma Using Tandem Mass Spectrometry Detection

    The present study was aimed at developing a simple, sensitive, and specific liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method for the quantification of rifaximin in human plasma using rifaximin D6 as internal standard. Chromatographic separation was performed on Zorbax SB C18, 4.6 x 75 mm, 3.5 μm column with an isocratic mobile phase composed of 10 mM ammonium formate (pH 4.0) and acetonitrile in the ratio of (20:80 v/v), at a flow-rate of 0.3 mL/min. Rifaximin and rifaximin D6 were detected with proton adducts at m/z 786.4 → 754.4 and 792.5 → 760.5 in multiple reaction monitoring positive mode respectively. The acidified samples were subjected to liquid–liquid extraction using a mixture of methyl t-butyl ether - dichloromethane (75: 25) followed by centrifugation, nitrogen-aided evaporation and reconstitution. The method was validated over a linear concentration range of 20 - 20000 pg/mL with correlation coefficient of more than 0.9995. This method demonstrated intra and inter-day precision within 0.6 - 2.6% and 2.2 - 5.6%, and accuracy within 95.7 - 104.2% and 95.8 - 105.0% for rifaximin, respectively. Rifaximin was found to be stable throughout freeze–thawing cycles, bench top and postoperative stability studies. This method was applied successfully for the analysis of blood samples following oral administration of rifaximin (200 mg) in 17 healthy Indian male human volunteers under fasting conditions.Keywords: Bioequivalence, mass spectrometry, rifaximinEast and Central African Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences Vol. 13 (2010) 78-8

    Cerebral complexity preceded enlarged brain size and reduced olfactory bulbs in Old World monkeys

    Analysis of the only complete early cercopithecoid (Old World monkey) endocast currently known, that of 15-million-year (Myr)-old Victoriapithecus, reveals an unexpectedly small endocranial volume (ECV) relative to body size and a large olfactory bulb volume relative to ECV, similar to extant lemurs and Oligocene anthropoids. However, the Victoriapithecus brain has principal and arcuate sulci of the frontal lobe not seen in the stem catarrhine Aegyptopithecus, as well as a distinctive cercopithecoid pattern of gyrification, indicating that cerebral complexity preceded encephalization in cercopithecoids. Since larger ECVs, expanded frontal lobes, and reduced olfactory bulbs are already present in the 17- to 18-Myr-old ape Proconsul these features evolved independently in hominoids (apes) and cercopithecoids and much earlier in the former. Moreover, the order of encephalization and brain reorganization was apparently different in hominoids and cercopithecoids, showing that brain size and cerebral organization evolve independently

    SNX27-Mediated Recycling of Neuroligin-2 Regulates Inhibitory Signaling

    GABAA receptors mediate fast inhibitory transmission in the brain, and their number can be rapidly up- or downregulated to alter synaptic strength. Neuroligin-2 plays a critical role in the stabilization of synaptic GABAA receptors and the development and maintenance of inhibitory synapses. To date, little is known about how the amount of neuroligin-2 at the synapse is regulated and whether neuroligin-2 trafficking affects inhibitory signaling. Here, we show that neuroligin-2, when internalized to endosomes, co-localizes with SNX27, a brain-enriched cargo-adaptor protein that facilitates membrane protein recycling. Direct interaction between the PDZ domain of SNX27 and PDZ-binding motif in neuroligin-2 enables membrane retrieval of neuroligin-2, thus enhancing synaptic neuroligin-2 clusters. Furthermore, SNX27 knockdown has the opposite effect. SNX27-mediated up- and downregulation of neuroligin-2 surface levels affects inhibitory synapse composition and signaling strength. Taken together, we show a role for SNX27-mediated recycling of neuroligin-2 in maintenance and signaling of the GABAergic synapse
