    Missy Maker is a middle school girl who loves math and fashion. She sees math in everything she does. She tries to hide this from her friends, because she thinks it’s too geeky. Missy hears that the school math club needs more members, but she’s worried about what her friends will think if she joins, and she’s already committed to joining the fashion club. After an epic internal struggle and with the support of her peers and her quirky, loving family, Missy finds that she can be both a Mathlete and a Fashionista. Missy figures out how to bring the two clubs together to help both groups win. In the process, she discovers that she can openly excel in math and science and still be popular with her peers.     Incorporating marketing strategies to improve usability assurance in user-centered design processes

But when referring to software products, it is necessary to keep in mind that such strategies are affected by specific quality criteria as usability. Usability and marketing can be combined to offer more attractive products. In fact, specific instances of marketing technics have been gradually adopted by software engineers to improve usability. All in all, there is a lack of systematic approaches dealing with the integration of both marketing and usability through activities in a user-centered development process. To face such challenge, in this paper we have selected the most important marketing strategies to be integrated as activities in a user-centered process model.     Partner Selection in Emerging and Developed Market Contexts : Resource-Based and Organizational Learning Perspectives

    International audienceThis study of the international partner selection of firms from emerging (Mexico, Poland, and Romania) and developed (Canada, France, and the United States) markets supports resource-based and organizational learning explanations of such partner selection, a critical factor for success with international strategic alliances. Emerging market firms emphasized financial assets, technical capabilities, intangible assets, and willingness to share expertise in selection of partners more than developed market firms. In contrast, developed market firms tried to leverage their resources through partner selection. In particular, they emphasized unique competencies and local market knowledge and access in their partner selection more than emerging market firms.<br/

    Resurrecting immortal‐time bias in the study of readmissions

    ObjectiveTo compare readmission rates as measured by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) methods.Data Sources20 percent sample of national Medicare data for patients undergoing cystectomy, colectomy, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair, and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between 2010 and 2014.Study DesignRetrospective cohort study comparing 30‐day readmission rates.Data Collection/Extraction MethodsPatients undergoing cystectomy, colectomy, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, and total knee arthroplasty between 2010 and 2014 were identified.Principal FindingsCystectomy had the highest and total knee arthroplasty had the lowest readmission rate. The NSQIP measure reported significantly lower rates for all procedures compared to the CMS measure, which reflects an immortal‐time bias.ConclusionsWe found significantly different readmission rates across all surgical procedures when comparing CMS and NSQIP measures. Longer length of stay exacerbated these differences.     Agronomic and Economic Performance Characteristics of Conventional and Low-External-Input Cropping Systems

    A 22-acre field experiment was conducted in Boone, IA, from 2003–2006 to test the hypothesis that low-external-input(LEI) cropping systems can produce yields and profits that match or exceed those obtained from conventional systems. A conventionally managed 2-year rotation system [corn (Zea mays L.)/soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)] was compared with a 3-year LEI rotation system [corn/soybean/small grain + red clover (Trifolium pratense L.)], and a 4-year LEI rotation system [corn/soybean/small grain + alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)/alfalfa]. Triticale (× Triticosecale Wittmack) was used as the small grain in 2003–2005; oat (Avena sativa L.) was used in 2006. Over the period of 2003– 2006, synthetic N fertilizer use was 59% and 74% lower in the 3- and 4-year systems, respectively, compared with the 2-year system. Similarly, herbicide use was reduced 76% and 82% in the 3- and 4-year systems

    The effect of experimental hyperoxia on erythrocytes’ oxygen-transport function

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of hyperoxia, calcium ions and pH value on the composition of major phospholipids in human erythrocyte membranes and erythrocytes’ oxygen-transport function. To create a model of hyperoxia, we saturated the incubated mixture with oxygen by constant passing of oxygen–air mixture through the incubation medium. To assess the effect of elevated calcium ion concentrations, CaCl2 was added to the incubation medium. An incubation medium with different pH was used to study the effect of various pH values. Lipids were extracted from erythrocytes and chromatographic separation was carried out in a thin layer of silica gel deposited on a glass plate. The thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-active products and the content of diene conjugates (DC) in erythrocytes were determined. The oxygen-binding capacity of haemoglobin was evaluated using Raman spectroscopy. The obtained results indicated that hyperoxia causes deep changes both in the composition and character of bilayer lipids of erythrocyte membranes, which affects the functional characteristics of erythrocytes, primarily the oxygen-transport properties of erythrocyte haemoglobin. It should be noted that a combination of Ca2+ ions and change in the pH value intensify the processes associated with disruption of phospholipids’ composition. The findings indicate that the lipid phase is one of the key elements in the functioning of erythrocytes in norm as well as during development of various pathological processes
