    Virtual reality public speaking training: effectiveness and user technology acceptance

    Public speaking is a fundamental task in many professional or personal situations. At the same time, there is widespread fear of it, and it takes practice to present well. Previous studies suggest that Virtual Reality Public Speaking Training (VRPST) offers a promising opportunity for this. However, studies evaluating objective and subjective indicators are lacking so far, and valid control conditions are missing in previous studies. We aimed to overcome these drawbacks. In our experiment, participants (N = 42) had the task of presenting a card game to a four-person audience using five provided PowerPoint slides within a time limit of 5 minutes. They prepared either using VRPST or using common self-directed preparation (control condition), being randomly assigned to a condition. Both groups were instructed to prepare for the task at home and given 30 min to learn the rules of the game and present them using the slides. The control group was given an additional 30 min to prepare individually for the presentation task at home. The experimental group received an additional 30-min VRPST session. This training session was done without specific feedback and the presentation was repeated three times. The quality of the rule explanation, the audience-assessed presentation quality, and the subjects� self-assessed presentation quality were measured. Our results indicate that the VRPST is effective. Subjects who completed the VRPST did a better job of explaining the rules and were better rated by the audience. In addition, the experimental subjects also tended to rate their presentation better in the VRPST condition. Further analyses of those participants who completed the VRPST show high technology acceptance. Our results show the VR training had a significant performance-enhancing effect and that participants would use the VRPST if it were available to them. It seems that practicing a presentation in VR is useful and even better than a conventional preparation

    Habitat Use of Ringed Seals (Phoca hispida) in the North Water Area (North Baffin Bay)

    In conjunction with the International North Water Polynya Study in Smith Sound (northern Baffin Bay) in 1997-99, we examined the area use and diving activity of 23 ringed seals (Phoca hispida) that had been equipped with satellite transmitters on the Greenland side of the North Water (NOW) area. The study covered the period 12 August 1996-30 June 1999. Contact with the seals was maintained for an average of 108 days (range: 8-332 days). Four seals emigrated from the NOW area. During all seasons, the seals that remained in the area spent about 90% of the time in coastal (< 100 m deep) waters in the eastern parts of the NOW area. The total area visited by the seals during the open-water season ranged between 10 300 km² (1996) and 18 500 km² (1998), corresponding to about 15% to 25% of the entire NOW area. In winter, the total area visited by the seals varied between 2500 km² (1996-97) and 7000 km² (1998-99), and in spring, between 800 km² (1999) and 2100 km² (1997). Individual movement was significantly greater during the open-water season than during winter and spring. Maximum dive depths recorded were over 500 m (maximum for the instrument) outside and 376 m inside the NOW, for a 96 kg male seal. Non-adult seals spent about 99% of the time in waters less than 100 m deep, and more than 92% of the time in the upper 50 m. In contrast, adults tended to spend more time at greater depths. The study indicated that (1) the ringed seals took advantage of the generally lighter ice conditions in the eastern NOW, and (2) that non-adults likely exploited ice-associated amphipods and young polar cod (Boreogadus saida), and adults, mainly older polar cod and cephalopods taken at greater depths.Conjointement avec l'étude internationale sur la polynie de l'Eau du Nord dans le détroit de Smith (partie nord de la baie de Baffin) menée de 1997 à 1999, on a examiné l'utilisation de cette zone et l'activité de plongée de 23 phoques annelés (Phoca hispida) munis d'émetteurs-satellite du côté groenlandais de la région de l'Eau du Nord («NOW»). L'étude a couvert la période allant du 12 août 1996 au 30 juin 1999. Le contact avec les phoques a été maintenu pendant une moyenne de 108 jours (étendue: 8-332 jours). Quatre phoques ont émigré de la zone NOW. Durant toutes les saisons, les phoques qui restaient dans la zone passaient environ 90% du temps dans des eaux côtières (profondeur < 100 m) dans les secteurs orientaux de NOW. La superficie totale visitée par les phoques durant la saison d'eau libre allait de 10 300 km² (1996) à 18 500 km² (1998), correspondant à environ 15 à 25% de toute la zone NOW. En hiver, l'étendue totale fréquentée par les phoques allait de 2500 km² (1996-1997) à 7000 km² (1998-1999), et au printemps, de 800 km² (1999) à 2100 km² (1997). Les déplacements individuels étaient de beaucoup plus grands durant la saison d'eau libre qu'au cours de l'hiver et du printemps. Les profondeurs maximales de plongée enregistrées dépassaient 500 m (limite de l'instrument) à l'extérieur de la zone NOW et 376 m à l'intérieur, pour un phoque mâle de 96 kg. Les phoques non adultes passaient environ 99% du temps dans des eaux à une profondeur ne dépassant pas 100 m, et plus de 92% du temps dans les 50 m supérieurs. En revanche, les adultes avaient tendance à passer plus de temps à de plus grandes profondeurs. L'étude révèle 1) que les phoques annelés tiraient parti du fait qu'il y avait moins de glace dans la partie orientale de NOW, et 2) que, selon toute vraisemblance, les non-adultes exploitaient amphipodes et jeune morue polaire (Boreogadus saida) associés à la glace, les adultes se nourrissant surtout de morue polaire plus âgée et de céphalopodes prélevés à de plus grandes profondeurs

    Stroke placement in women’s professional tennis: What’s after the serve?

    The aim of the present study was to investigate the placement of the return, and the 3rd and 4th strokes in professional women’s tennis, the possible differences related to the level of play and to derive practical recommendations from the results. In total this study contains an examination of 2562 returns, 2065 3rd strokes and 1606 4th strokes from 28 players in 19 professional women’s tennis matches (WTA & ITF 2018-2020 season). All strokes were classified using a specific court division method taking outcome (i.e., in, out, net) and placements into account for statistical analyses. Results show that returns are mainly placed into the court’s middle zones whereas 3rd strokes are placed more into offensive zone groups with 4th strokes similarly placed but more scattered. No correlation was found between the placement of the return and the 3rd stroke. Correlations were found between the placement of 4th stroke and the return, between the 4th and the 3rd stroke as well as between WTA and ITF players regarding all three strokes (return, 3rd stroke, 4th stroke). Present findings may be of interest to female tennis players and their coaches aiming to improve practice patterns in training and competitive performance in matches

    On the rotating wave approximation in the adiabatic limit

    I revisit a longstanding question in quantum optics; When is the rotating wave approximation justified? In terms of the Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi models I demonstrate that the approximation in general breaks down in the adiabatic limit regardless of system parameters. This is explicitly shown by comparing Berry phases of the two models, where it is found that this geometrical phase is strictly zero in the Rabi model contrary to the non-trivial Berry phase of the Jaynes-Cummings model. The source of this surprising result is traced back to different topologies in the two models.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure

    Agency, qualia and life: connecting mind and body biologically

    Many believe that a suitably programmed computer could act for its own goals and experience feelings. I challenge this view and argue that agency, mental causation and qualia are all founded in the unique, homeostatic nature of living matter. The theory was formulated for coherence with the concept of an agent, neuroscientific data and laws of physics. By this method, I infer that a successful action is homeostatic for its agent and can be caused by a feeling - which does not motivate as a force, but as a control signal. From brain research and the locality principle of physics, I surmise that qualia are a fundamental, biological form of energy generated in specialized neurons. Subjectivity is explained as thermodynamically necessary on the supposition that, by converting action potentials to feelings, the neural cells avert damage from the electrochemical pulses. In exchange for this entropic benefit, phenomenal energy is spent as and where it is produced - which precludes the objective observation of qualia

    Getting farming on the agenda: Planning, policymaking, and governance practices of urban agriculture in New York City

    How and why is urban agriculture taken up into local food policies and sustainability plans? This paper uses a case study of urban agriculture policymaking in New York City from 2007 to 2011 to examine the power-laden operation of urban environmental governance. It explores several ‘faces of power,’ including overt authority, institutionalized ‘rules of the game,’ and hegemony. It also investigates how multiple actors interact in policymaking processes, including through the construction and use of broad discursive concepts. Findings draw upon analysis of policy documents and semi-structured interviews with 43 subjects engaged in food systems policymaking. Some municipal decision-makers questioned the significance of urban agriculture, due to the challenges of quantifying its benefits and the relative scarcity of open space in the developed city. Yet, these challenges proved insufficient to prevent a coalition of civic activists working in collaboration with public officials to envision plans on food policy that included urban agriculture. Actors created the ‘local/regional food system’ as a narrative concept in order to build broad coalitions and gain entry to the municipal policy sphere. Tracing the roll-out of plans reveals the way in which both the food systems concept and specific policy proposals were repeated and legitimized.Unpacking the dynamics of this iterative policymaking contributes to an understanding of how urban environmental governance happens in this case

    Prototype of the novel CAMEA concept—A backend for neutron spectrometers

    The continuous angle multiple energy analysis concept is a backend for both time-of-flight and analyzer-based neutron spectrometers optimized for neutron spectroscopy with highly efficient mapping in the horizontal scattering plane. The design employs a series of several upward scattering analyzer arcs placed behind each other, which are set to different final energies allowing a wide angular coverage with multiple energies recorded simultaneously. For validation of the concept and the model calculations, a prototype was installed at the Swiss neutron source SINQ, Paul Scherrer Institut. The design of the prototype, alignment and calibration procedures, experimental results of background measurements, and proof-of-concept inelastic measurements on LiHoF4 and h-YMnO3 are presented here

    Marine mammal hotspots across the circumpolar Arctic

    Aim: Identify hotspots and areas of high species richness for Arctic marine mammals. Location: Circumpolar Arctic. Methods: A total of 2115 biologging devices were deployed on marine mammals from 13 species in the Arctic from 2005 to 2019. Getis-Ord Gi* hotspots were calculated based on the number of individuals in grid cells for each species and for phyloge-netic groups (nine pinnipeds, three cetaceans, all species) and areas with high spe-cies richness were identified for summer (Jun-Nov), winter (Dec-May) and the entire year. Seasonal habitat differences among species’ hotspots were investigated using Principal Component Analysis. Results: Hotspots and areas with high species richness occurred within the Arctic continental-shelf seas and within the marginal ice zone, particularly in the “Arctic gateways” of the north Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Summer hotspots were generally found further north than winter hotspots, but there were exceptions to this pattern, including bowhead whales in the Greenland-Barents Seas and species with coastal distributions in Svalbard, Norway and East Greenland. Areas with high species rich-ness generally overlapped high-density hotspots. Large regional and seasonal dif-ferences in habitat features of hotspots were found among species but also within species from different regions. Gap analysis (discrepancy between hotspots and IUCN ranges) identified species and regions where more research is required. Main conclusions: This study identified important areas (and habitat types) for Arctic marine mammals using available biotelemetry data. The results herein serve as a benchmark to measure future distributional shifts. Expanded monitoring and teleme-try studies are needed on Arctic species to understand the impacts of climate change and concomitant ecosystem changes (synergistic effects of multiple stressors). While efforts should be made to fill knowledge gaps, including regional gaps and more com-plete sex and age coverage, hotspots identified herein can inform management ef-forts to mitigate the impacts of human activities and ecological changes, including creation of protected areas
