O desconhecimento dos mecanismos fisiopatológicos, é uma limitação na orientação preventiva, diagnóstica e terapêutica dos doentesBackground: Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy is an acute and transitory dysfunction of the left ventricle, which results from a hyperkinesia of the basal segment and apical acinesia. It typically affects postmenopausal women subjected to significant emocional and physical stress, although it remains unclear the real pathophysiology of this illness. Its clinical presentation bears a resemblance to Acute Myocardial Infarction even though there is no significant blockage of coronary arteries.
Objectives: Evaluate the clinical utility of non-invasive methods to diagnose Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy, but also determine their limitations and identify criteria that allow differential diagnosis with Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Methods: Bibliographic research in PubMed using key-words Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, diagnosis and non invasive methods during the period of 2005 and 2012.
Results: The analyzed documents evaluated epidemiology data, their clinical features and ill’s past medical history, the possible pathophysiology mechanism and the importance of non-invasive methods of diagnosis such as Electrocardiography, Cardiac Biomarkers, Echocardiography and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance assembling a definite diagnosis of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy and excluding with conviction Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Conclusion: Nowadays, it is not possible to diagnose Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy and exclude with certainty Acute Myocardial Infarction simply using non-invasive complementary methods since there are no parameters that provide an indubitable diagnose. Against a suspicious of Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy it is mandatory to perform a Cardiac Catheterization. The uncertainty of the pathophysiology mechanism in this illness is a limitation to preventive orientation, diagnosis and therapeutic approach
Lisbon and its Region: Stereoscopic Photography, C. 1853-1890
This paper concerns the use of steroscopic photography in Lisbon and its region, especially in Sintra, from the 1850s to the end of the 1880s. We will synthetically address the documents and images generated by professional and amateur photographers, their context and their themes.
The first material about stereoscopic photography, the first stereoscopic images and the first imported stereoscopes arrived in Lisbon in the 1850s through photographers, most of them foreigners, who brought them for their local use. A very small number of professionals took stereoscopic portraits in studios. As of the late 1850s, some professionals and trained amateurs used this technique and portrayed the city and its region. At the end of that decade and the beginning of the next, stereoscopic photos were sold in photographic studios and in a specialised warehouse. Already in the 1850s, but mainly after the late 1860s, Parisian photographers and editors of stereoscopic photos also occasionally produced and sold images of Portugal, including Lisbon, and had them listed in their catalogues. In the 1860s and 1870s, stereoscopic photos were exhibited in shows, according to contemporary descriptions, although their precise technical nature was not always very clear. The occasional production and commercialisation of stereoscopic images continued into the 1870s and declined sharply in the 1880s. It was only at the end of the next decade, and above all during the start of the 20th century, would stereoscopic photography regain the interest of professionals and amateurs
Tebuconazole e azoxistrobina: análise do potencial fungicida da combinação usada numa formulação comercial
Specific information towards each fungicidal active ingredient and its effects on
all local organisms, whether they’re pathogens, non-target organisms or crops
is still largely lacking. In this study, the potential effects of azoxystrobin,
tebuconazole and a commercial formulation with these two active ingredients
combined, known as Custodia 320 SC, were tested on two fungal species,
Pyrenophora teres and Rhynchosporium secalis, both well known worldwide
pathogens responsible for worldwide losses in important crops such as barley
and rye. The results indicated significant resistance to both active ingredients
by P. teres, with tebuconazole-treated cultures showing the lowest inhibition in
the growth response. R. secalis showed also low and poorly variable growth
inhibition rates for both fungicides, never reaching to 50% inhibition in
comparison to the respective control. These results were obtained considering
exposure concentration ranges within the limits of water solubility for both
compounds and including concentrations that correspond to typical application
rates used in the field to treat affected crops. Nevertheless, bacterial
contamination in early trials allowed to observe that under these conditions the
efficacy of the fungicides is superior (fungal growth inhibition rate over 50%)
until a certain level of exposure, from which onwards the efficacy is again
limited; this effect can be explained by a reduction of the fungi resistance
capacity in competitive scenarios. The efficacy of the combined active
ingredients was lower than equivalent treatments in trials where they were
applied singly, suggesting the possibility of antagonistic interactions between
azoxystrobin and tebuconazole. Additionally, the comparison of effects
promoted by the combination of the active substances with their equivalent
combinations applied via commercial formulation demonstrated that the
formulants other than the active substances used in the commercial formulation
do not promote their efficacy when the target organisms are P. teres or R.
secalis.
centeio e a cevada.
Adicionalmente, a
Comparison of different radiotherapy breast irradiation techniques in LINAC using photon mode
RESUMO: Introdução – A Radioterapia (RT) é uma abordagem terapêutica para tratamento de neoplasia de mama. Contudo, diferentes técnicas de irradiação (TI) podem ser usadas. Objetivos – Comparar 4 TI, considerando a irradiação dos volumes alvo (PTV) e dos órgãos de risco (OAR). Metodologia – Selecionaram-se 7 pacientes com indicação para RT de mama esquerda. Sobre tomografia computorizada foram feitos os contornos do PTV e dos OAR. Foram calculadas 4 planimetrias/paciente para as TI: conformacional externa (EBRT), intensidade modulada com 2 (IMRT2) e 5 campos (IMRT5) e arco dinâmico (DART). Resultados – Histogramas de dose volume foram comparados para todas as TI usando o software de análise estatística, IBM SPSS v20. Com IMRT5 e DART, os OAR recebem mais doses baixas. No entanto, IMRT5 apresenta melhores índices de conformidade e homogeneidade para o PTV. Conclusões – IMRT5 apresenta o melhor índice de conformidade;
EBRT e IMRT2 apresentam melhores resultados que DART. Há d.e.s entre as TI, sobretudo em doses mais baixas nos OAR.ABSTRACT: Introduction – Radiotherapy (RT) is a therapeutic approach on breast neoplasy.
However, there are several irradiation techniques (TI) that can be used. Objectives
– Compare 4 TI, considering the target volume (PTV) irradiation and the organs at risk (OAR). Methodology – 7 patients with indication to RT to the left breast were elected. On computerized tomographys, the contours of the PTV and the OAR were drawn. 4
treatment plans/patient were calculated: external beam (EBRT), intensity modulated with two (IMRT2), and 5 fields (IMRT5) and dynamic arc (DART) RT. Results – Dose volume
histograms were compared for all TI using the statistical analysis software, IBM SPSS v20. With IMRT5 and DART, the OAR receives more low doses. However, IMRT5 has better
conformity and homogeneity indexes for the PTV. Conclusions – IMRT5 has the best conformity index; EBRT and IMRT2 have better results than DART. There are significant differences between the TI mainly on low doses on the OAR
Amino acids, glucose metabolism and clinical relevance for phenylketonuria management
It is general knowledge that glycaemia is affected by digested nutrients.Amino acids intake appears to be an important regulator in this regard. Many questions need to be answered, such as the real mediators of this responseand the mechanisms underlying this metabolic behavior. Studies have been undertaken in order to investigate the role of amino acids on metabolic parameters. Their main fndings suggest that the ingestion of free aminoacids have a pivotal role in avoiding glycaemia excursions, improving glucosetolerance. In parallel, several important molecules for glucose metabolism have been exploited. Insulin and glucagon-like peptide - 1 (GLP-1) release seemto be the main triggers of this response. This insulinogenic effect is attributed to some amino acids, particularly the branched-chain amino acids (leucine, isoleucine and valine). GLP-1 may exert its effects by activating its receptor inpancreas and enhancing insulin release by β-cells or through its extrapancreaticactions. The mechanisms that may justify the aforementioned effects remainto be answered, being the mTOR pathway activation a possible key. Thesemetabolic effects may have a special interest within the nutritional management of Phenylketonuria (PKU), an inborn metabolic disease of phenylalanine (Phe) catabolism. Since a Phe restricted diet is the mainstay of PKU treatment, a chronic supplementation with a Phe-free amino acid mixture is used. Although scientifc evidence is scarce, it is hypothesized whether this chronic ingestion may modulate glycaemia
Current status and new business models for electric vehicles demand response design in smart grids
Global electric vehicles sales increased about 10 times from 2011, reaching more than 1 million vehicles in roads by 2015. This number is very likely to increase at a steady pace as more models are made available and battery technology improves and costs decrease. It is recognized that the electric vehicles mass integration will imply more complexity to the operation and planning tasks of power systems, but also allow additional opportunities. Indeed, demand response can play a major role to integrate electric vehicles in the future smart grid. This paper discusses the current initiatives from the retailing business in Portugal, Spain and Germany to deal with electric vehicles integration and discusses some new demand response models shaped for the smart grid that can be the new business model of tomorrow energy providers. Currently, the electric vehicles demand response measures adopted by the industry are very limited, mostly offering time of use tariffs with a discount rate. This work has been supported by the European Commission H2020 MSCA-RISE-2014: Marie Skłodowska- Curie project DREAM-GO Enabling Demand Response for short and real- time Efficient And Market Based Smart Grid Operation -An intelligent and real-time simulation approach ref 641794.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization to Solve Energy Scheduling with Vehicle-to-Grid in Office Buildings Considering Uncertainties
This paper presents a Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) methodology to solve the problem of energy resource management in buildings with a penetration of Distributed Generation (DG) and Electric Vehicles (EVs). The proposed methodology consists in a multi-objective function, in which it is intended to maximize the profit and minimize CO2 emissions. This methodology considers the uncertainties associated with the production of electricity by the photovoltaic and wind energy sources. This uncertainty is modeled with the use of a robust optimization approach in the metaheuristic. A case study is presented using a real building facility from Portugal, in order to verify the feasibility of the implemented robust MOPSO.This work has received funding from the Project NetEffiCity (ANI|P2020 18015), and from FEDER Funds through COMPETE program and from National Funds through FCT under the project UID/EEA/00760/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
