O terrorismo e a transformação do planeamento estratégico de segurança nacional dos EUA

    Get PDF

Wages and Job Satisfaction in Portugal

The interest in the analysis of job satisfaction has increased among economists. Indeed, reported levels of satisfaction have been seen as a good predictor of individual behaviour such as job turnover, productivity and absenteeism. Because of this, several studies have tried to identify the determinants of job satisfaction. This paper is concerned with job satisfaction in Portugal. For this purpose, we use the first six waves of the European Household Panel Data (ECHP). The panel nature of the data allows us to use a random effects estimator in order to control for unobservable individual heterogeneity. The results indicate that wages matter for job satisfaction but do not tell the whole story. In particular, having a good health status, a permanent contract and working the public sector influences positively the level satisfaction. We also find a great heterogeneity in satisfaction by regions, even in a small country as Portugal. These findings are valid for overall job satisfaction as well as for satisfaction with specific job domains such as pay, security, type of work and hours worked. Key words: job satisfaction, wages, regions, unobserved heterogeneity JEL Code: J28

The way that organizations explore the Internet has been the focus of a substantial body of scientific studies and non-academic reflection. The main goal of this study is to analyze the potential of the internet as a mode of internationalization and the factors that influence the results of the adoption of this mean to access foreign markets. For this purpose, we examine the determinants of the level of international sales made via internet estimating an ordered probit model. The results show that the importance of previous experience in using the internet and developing international activity, together with the level of internet marketing budget , the level of investment on internet sophistication, the firm dimension, the business age and the type pf activity are variables that determine the results obtain in the international sales trough the internet.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Emotional intelligence profile of tourists and its impact on tourism

    Get PDF
The study aims to characterize, for the first time, the emotional intelligence profile of the tourists visiting the city of Porto as well as to observe its influence on the intention to return and activities perfomed during the stay, along with other sociodemographic factors,To achieve these purposes, we used a sample of 886 responses with the following purposes: on the one hand, to get the emotional intelligence constructs by applying the confirmatory factorial analysis, and on the other hand, to apply a logit model to describe the intention to return. Four constructs of tourists’ emotional intelligence emerged: emotion regulation, emotion use, evaluation of their own emotions, and evaluation of others’ emotions. . The first construct was indicated as the most important leading us to conclude that tourists have the ability to control their own emotions, presenting a strong emotional control. The four constructs and different variables of the tourists’ socio-demographic profile show a positive effect on the intention to return. This type of information is highly useful for the sector since it allows the definition of communication strategies and guides businesses to adapt to the profile of tourists.B913-0565-0908 | Elvira VieiraN/

Next generation sequencing: The key to understand Klebsiella pneumoniae biofilms?

    Get PDF
Background: The incidence of healthcare-associated infections (HAI) is determined by underlying disease conditions and exposure to high risk medical interventions. In Portugal since 1980s K. pneumoniae is a recognized etiological agent of epidemic and endemic infections in healthcare units. An increasing rate of K. pneumoniae strains resistant either to extended cephalosporins or carbapenems has been observed and one of the mechanisms responsible for the emergence of drug resistance could be the biofilm assembly. The capacity of K. pneumoniae to form biofilm was first described in the 1980s for abiotic surfaces and ten years later on biotic surfaces. The antibiotic failure to penetrate through the biofilm layers, the emergence of mutations which might be easily transferred horizontally, and quorum sensing have been pointed as responsible for the increased antibiotic resistance of bacteria within biofilms. The main objective was to study the biofilm structure and the kinetic assembly associated to antibiotic resistance profile in K. pneumoniae strains capsulate or not, and identify the genes involved in biofilm assembly on full genome sequencing of studied strains. Material and Methods: Twoo K. pneumoniae isolates collected in 1980 (Kp45, Kp703) and one (Kp2948) in 2011 were studied. Kp703 was encapsulated and the remaining had capsular type K:2. The bacterial ability to assemble biofilms on cell culture plates was evaluated. For SEM analysis, biofilms were allowed to form on six wells cell culture plates (Nunc) for 12h at 37ºC. DNA was extracted using QiAamp DNA mini kit following the manufactures instructions. Full genome sequence was performed using next-generation sequencing platform MiSeq (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA, USA) according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The RAST platform was used for annotation and MAUVE platform for multiple alignments. Results: The three isolates were able to assemble biofilms although following different kinetics. K. pneumoniae strains Kp703 and Kp45 followed similar kinetics with identical biomass increase nevertheless these bacteria differ in capsule expression. Full-sequencing and annotation of genomes of isolates was performed in order to explain the differences found in biofilm assembly. Preliminary data already revealed that the K. pneumoniae strains displaying enhanced biofilm-forming ability is genetically different from the others, and, in particular, present some specific features enrolling genomic regions believed to be biofilm-related in other bacteria (an intact prophage, genes coding for a filamentous haemoagglutinin, a haemolysin expression modulating protein and an YdeA protein). Conclusion: K. pneumoniae lacking capsule, regarded as less virulent, have a better performance as biofilm assembler and exhibited the highest increase in antibiotic resistance when organized within biofilms. The analysis of the full genome sequence will allow reachingon K.pneumoniaebiofilms and provide novel opportunities to exploit the overall fitness ofK. pneumoniaeunder antibiotic stress

The diversity of moth species (Insecta, Lepidoptera) recorded in the forest nursery of Nordeste county on São Miguel island (Azores) is given. Adults were sampled between March and December 2019 using three methods: (i) light trap to caught Noctuidae species, (ii) open-sided delta trap baited with a synthetic female sex pheromone lure to attract Epiphyas postvittana males and (iii) entomological net to identify microlepidopteran moths. A total of 10160 adults belonging to 33 lepidopteran species were recorded and listed by families, including: Argyresthiidae 1 (3%), Crambidae 4 (12%), Erebidae 1 (3%), Geometridae 5 (15%), Noctuidae 18 (55%), Sphingidae 1 (3%), Tineidae 1 (3%), and Tortricidae 2 (6%). The families Noctuidae, Geometridae and Crambidae were the most diverse. Those with the highest abundance of adults was the Noctuidae family followed by the Crambidae, Trotricidae and Tineidae. The number of caught adults was consistently higher during spring and summer, decreasing sharply in late fall. For 14 species caught in the light trap the adult sex ratio was favorable to females, except for Xestia c-nigrum which was favorable to males. An analysis of the colonization status, feeding and primary hosts of these endemic, native or exotic moth species suggests that plants reared in forest nurseries, being attacked by such insects, facilitates our understanding of the diversity of lepidopterans that establish in Laurel Forest environments and to what extent there is a need to monitor and control them mainly with biological control agents.Regional Founds, through Official Forestry Services from Regional Government of the Azores, within the research project MoCIL “Monitorização e Controlo Integrado de Lepidópteros em Viveiros Florestais (Nordeste e Furnas) na ilha de São Miguel - Açores” FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, I.P., under the project UIDP/05292/2020 and UIDB/05292/2020. Adults were sampled between March and December 2019 using three methods: (i) light trap to catch Noctuidae species, (ii) open-sided delta trap baited with a synthetic female sex pheromone lure to attract Epiphyas postvittana (Walker) males and (iii) entomological net to collect microlepidopteran moths. This contribution focuses mainly on the diversity of moths present in one forest nursery of Nordeste County of São Miguel Island (Azores), especially on the species associated with endemic and native plant species. It also contributes to better plan strategies for integrated protection and conservation measures, since nurseries host a great diversity of plants from the Laurel Forest, which may attract many lepidopteran species. NEW INFORMATION: A total of 10160 adults belonging to 33 lepidopteran species were recorded and listed by families, including: Argyresthiidae, one species (3%), Crambidae, four species (12%), Erebidae, one species (3%), Geometridae, five species (15%), Noctuidae, 18 species (55%), Sphingidae, one species (3%), Tineidae, one species (3%) and Tortricidae, two species (6%).
