Miniature electrometer preamplifier effectively compensates for input capacitance
Negative capacitance preamplifier using a dual MOS /Metal Oxide Silicon/ transistor in conjunction with bipolar transistors is used with intracellular microelectrodes in recording bioelectric potentials. Applications would include use as a pickup plate video amplifier in storage tube tests and for pH and ionization chamber measurements
Optical addressing of an individual erbium ion in silicon
The detection of electron spins associated with single defects in solids is a
critical operation for a range of quantum information and measurement
applications currently under development. To date, it has only been
accomplished for two centres in crystalline solids: phosphorus in silicon using
electrical readout based on a single electron transistor (SET) and
nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond using optical readout. A spin readout
fidelity of about 90% has been demonstrated with both electrical readout and
optical readout, however, the thermal limitations of the electrical readout and
the poor photon collection efficiency of the optical readout hinder achieving
the high fidelity required for quantum information applications. Here we
demonstrate a hybrid approach using optical excitation to change the charge
state of the defect centre in a silicon-based SET, conditional on its spin
state, and then detecting this change electrically. The optical frequency
addressing in high spectral resolution conquers the thermal broadening
limitation of the previous electrical readout and charge sensing avoids the
difficulties of efficient photon collection. This is done with erbium in
silicon and has the potential to enable new architectures for quantum
information processing devices and to dramatically increase the range of defect
centres that can be exploited. Further, the efficient electrical detection of
the optical excitation of single sites in silicon is a major step in developing
an interconnect between silicon and optical based quantum computing

Successful invaders are better defended: The example of Gracilaria vermiculophylla
To evaluate the importance of anti-herbivore resistance for algal invasion success we compared resistance traits among specimens of the red macroalga Gracilaria vermiculophylla from six native populations in Korea and China and eight invasive populations in Europe and Mexico that were maintained under identical conditions in the laboratory. Herbivorous snails both from the native range (Littorina brevicula) and from the invaded range (Littorina littorea) consumed significantly less of seaweed specimens originating from non-native populations. Metabolome profiling revealed that this preference was correlated with an increased woundactivated production of deterring prostaglandins and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids. Thus, invasive
populations of G. vermiculophylla are more strongly defended against challenge by herbivores and other biological enemies that cause local tissue or cell disruption and activate oxylipin production.
Anthropogenic distribution of genotypes adapted to resist elevated feeding pressure probably contributed to the invasion success of this species
Feature selection for high dimensional imbalanced class data using harmony search
Misclassification costs of minority class data in real-world applications can be very high. This is a challenging problem especially when the data is also high in dimensionality because of the increase in overfitting and lower model interpretability. Feature selection is recently a popular way to address this problem by identifying features that best predict a minority class. This paper introduces a novel feature selection method call SYMON which uses symmetrical uncertainty and harmony search. Unlike existing methods, SYMON uses symmetrical uncertainty to weigh features with respect to their dependency to class labels. This helps to identify powerful features in retrieving the least frequent class labels. SYMON also uses harmony search to formulate the feature selection phase as an optimisation problem to select the best possible combination of features. The proposed algorithm is able to deal with situations where a set of features have the same weight, by incorporating two vector tuning operations embedded in the harmony search process. In this paper, SYMON is compared against various benchmark feature selection algorithms that were developed to address the same issue. Our empirical evaluation on different micro-array data sets using G-Mean and AUC measures confirm that SYMON is a comparable or a better solution to current benchmarks
Ethyl Alcohol Extract of Hizikia fusiforme Induces Caspase-dependent Apoptosis in Human Leukemia U937 Cells by Generation of Reactive Oxygen Species
Purpose: Hizikia fusiforme is renowned for the possession of anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. In this study, the role of the ethyl alcohol extract of H. fusiforme (EAHF) in the induction of apoptosis in human leukemia U937 cells was investigated.Methods: Protein expression was investigated by Western blot analysis. Cell viability and apoptosis were analyzed by an MTT assay and flow cytometric analysis. Caspase activity was analyzed using a caspase-specific kit.Results: EAHF suppressed the proliferation of U937 cells in a dose-dependent manner. This effect was closely related to the induction of apoptosis via the downregulation of IAP family members such as IAP-1, IAP-2 and XIAP, as well as Bcl-2 proteins. The results also showed that caspases play an essential role in EAHF-induced apoptosis by generating of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In addition, ROS scavenging by N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and glutathione (GSH) decreased EAHF-induced apoptosis via the suppression of caspase activity. Although EAHF induced the phosphorylation of mitogenactivated protein kinases (MAPKs), treatment with MAPK inhibitors did not affect EAHF-induced apoptosis.Conclusion: These results suggest that EAHF induces apoptosis in U937 cells via ROS-dependent caspase activation.Keywords: Hizikia fusiforme, Apoptosis, Caspase, Reactive oxygen specie
The Aharonov-Bohm effect for massless Dirac fermions and the spectral flow of Dirac type operators with classical boundary conditions
We compute, in topological terms, the spectral flow of an arbitrary family of
self-adjoint Dirac type operators with classical (local) boundary conditions on
a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary under the assumption that the
initial and terminal operators of the family are conjugate by a bundle
automorphism. This result is used to study conditions for the existence of
nonzero spectral flow of a family of self-adjoint Dirac type operators with
local boundary conditions in a two-dimensional domain with nontrivial topology.

Invasion success of the seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla correlates with low palatability
Differences with respect to anti-herbivore defense were investigated in invasive and native populations of the seaweed Gracilaria vermiculophylla. Specimens from 6 native populations in East Asia and from 8 populations invasive in Europe and the Mexican Pacific coast were maintained under identical conditions and offered to herbivorous snails from both the native range (Littorina brevicula) and Europe (L. littorea) in no-choice feeding assays. L. brevicula consumed in total significantly larger amounts of G. vermiculophylla tissue than did L. littorea. Further, both snail species least consumed the seaweed specimens originating from either non-native populations or from populations native to the Korean East Sea/Sea of Japan. The Korean East Sea/Sea of Japan had previously been identified as putative donor region of all the invasive populations of G. vermiculophylla. Thus, populations in the donor region as well as non-native populations in different invaded realms feature an increased capacity to resist feeding pressure. Differences in nutrient content did not account for the observed patterns of consumption, as palatability and carbon to nitrogen (C:N) ratio were not significantly correlated. Thus, mechanical or chemical defenses or the content of feeding cues influenced the behavior of the snails. We suggest that low palatability contributed to the invasion success of the species
Single rare-earth ions as atomic-scale probes in ultra-scaled transistors
Continued dimensional scaling of semiconductor devices has driven information
technology into vastly diverse applications. As the size of devices approaches
fundamental limits, metrology techniques with nanometre resolution and
three-dimensional (3D) capabilities are desired for device optimisation. For
example, the performance of an ultra-scaled transistor can be strongly
influenced by the local electric field and strain. Here we study the spectral
response of single erbium ions to applied electric field and strain in a
silicon ultra-scaled transistor. Stark shifts induced by both the overall
electric field and the local charge environment are observed. Further, changes
in strain smaller than are detected, which is around two
orders of magnitude more sensitive than the standard techniques used in the
semiconductor industry. These results open new possibilities for
non-destructive 3D mapping of the local strain and electric field in the
channel of ultra-scaled transistors, using the single erbium ions as
