Hyperparameter optimization using agents for large scale machine learning

Machine learning (ML) has become an essential tool for humans to get rational predictions in different aspects of their lives. Hyperparameter algorithms are a tool for creating better ML models. The hyperparameter algorithms are an iterative execution of trial sets. Usually, the trials tend to have a different execution time. In this paper we are optimizing the grid and random search with cross-validation from the Dislib [1] an ML library for distributed computing built on top of PyCOMPSs[2] programming model, inspired by the Maggy [3], an open-source framework based on Spark. This optimization will use agents and avoid the trials to wait for each other, achieving a speed-up of over x2.5 compared to the previous implementation

Les infografies com a estratègia d’innovació docent per millorar competències

Codi del Projecte: 2017PID-UB/047Aquesta actuació volia aconseguir millorar algunes de les competències que han d’assolir els alumnes que cursin un Grau o un Màster, de manera més específica aquells alumnes que cursin el Grau d’Estadística de la Universitat de Barcelona-Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya i el Màster de Ciències Actuarials i Financeres de la Universitat de Barcelona. Les competències a les quals es va adreçar l’actuació van ser: • Capacitat comunicativa (capacitat de buscar, utilitzar i integrar informació), • Capacitat d’ordenar, representar i resumir, amb criteris objectius, la informació proporcionada per un conjunt de dades, • Capacitat per comunicar conclusions i els coneixements i raons últimes que les sustenten, a públics especialitzats i no especialitzats d’una manera clara i sense ambigüitats. L’ús de les infografies pretén millorar els aprenentatges dels alumnes, reforçant l’adquisició d’aquestes competències. Les assignatures implicades en aquest projecte han estat: • Solvència (Màster de Ciències Actuarials i Financeres) • Matemàtica Actuarial (Màster de Ciències Actuarials i Financeres). • Demografia (Grau d’Estadística). • Anàlisi de supervivència (Grau d’Estadística) L’actuació va consistir en incloure l’ús d’infografies en les assignatures implicades mencionades abans, específicament en les activitats d’avaluació continuada, i avaluar posteriorment l’experiència dels estudiants mitjançant una enquesta per conèixer la seva opinió sobre la utilitat de les infografies

Simultaneous Salmonella and bacteriophage isolation on Modified Semisolid Rappaport Vassiliadis media

ABSTRACT: Salmonella represents a food safety concern worldwide. Despite the application of National Control Programs (NCP) against Salmonella, regulated by the European Union, every year the European Food Safety Authority reports new cases. On the look for new alternatives to antibiotics, bacteriophages, or phages, rise as a promising alternative to treat multidrug resistance infections. Although they are known to be ubiquitous in the environment, their high specificity to host cells hinders their isolation and usage for phage therapy. The ISO 6579-1:2017 is performed as a reference method in the NCP and uses an unspecific media to enrich the sample the same way most phage isolation protocols do. Later, the protocol uses a more selective media to isolate the Salmonella, Modified Semisolid Rappaport Vassiliadis (MSRV). This paper aims to find out whether, due to the similarity between phage isolation protocols and the ISO 6579-1:2017, this last one could be used as a protocol to also isolate phages against the same bacterium that is being simultaneously isolated. To do so, 2 experiments were performed to assess phage isolation from MSRV media in in-vivo conditions. The results from experiments 1 and 2 proved that the MSRV media was usable for simultaneous phage and pathogen isolation through a single procedure. Additionally, there is a correlation between the antigenic formulae from the bacteria and the phage's host range, seeming to be effective against bacteria with similar antigenic formulae
