Parity Fluctuations Between Coulomb Blockaded Superconducting Islands

We find that if two superconducting islands of different number parity are linked by a tunnel junction the unpaired electron in the odd island has a tendency to tunnel into the even island. This process leads to fluctuations in time of the number parity of each island, giving rise to a random telegraph noise spectrum with a characteristic frequency that has an unusual temperature dependence. La declaratoria del testigo hostil en la audiencia oral dentro del proceso civil como un mecanismo de garantía al debido proceso y al principio de contradicción procesal

Esta investigación estudia las ventajas y desventajas de la declaratoria del testigo hostil en la audiencia oral dentro del proceso civil como un mecanismo de garantía al debido proceso y al principio de contradicción procesal en el sistema procesal ecuatoriano. El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar más ampliamente lo que se conoce en el país sobre el testigo hostil y su funcionamiento en un juicio mediante ejemplos prácticos de interrogatorio y contrainterrogatorio. Igualmente, se hace el análisis de esta figura, copiada e introducida en el sistema jurídico nacional, desde la perspectiva constitucional, es decir, desde la garantía del debido proceso y las prácticas jurisdiccionales en el Ecuador, cuyos esquemas son los del derecho civilista romano. Para el desarrollo de la investigación se requirió de la recopilación de material bibliográfico de fuentes impresas y digitales que contenga los temas explicados y relacionados en el acápite anterior. Fueron de utilidad artículos científicos, libros, entradas digitales, información constante en bases de datos digitales y cuerpos legales, analizados y sistematizados para la descripción de conceptos y redacción de los capítulos de la tesis. De tal forma, la metodología empleada es deductiva, ya que se parte de un análisis doctrinal, exegético, analítico y comparado. Como resultado de esta investigación se llegó a concluir que pese a haberse introducido la figura del testigo hostil en el Código Orgánico General de Procesos el legislador no ha incluido los fundamentos conceptuales ni las herramientas que permitan aplicar la figura del testigo hostil, como sí se hace en el sistema adversarial norteamericano, el que constituye una herramienta fundamental en la garantía de un proceso justo, por lo que en el Ecuador puede funcionar como una forma de garantía del debido proceso. Asimismo, se hace una propuesta de reforma del artículo pertinente en la normativa para que pueda usarse esta figura con esos fines

Effect of monitoring the onset of calving by a calving alarm thermometer on the prevalence of dystocia, stillbirth, retained fetal membranes and clinical metritis in a Hungarian dairy farm.

The objective of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of an intravaginal thermometer in the field prediction of the second stage of labor and to determine its impact on the health of dams and newborn calves. Holstein cows (n¼241) were randomly selected about 5 (mean±SD: 4.7±2.0) days before the expected date of calving and the thermometerwas inserted intothe vagina. Another 113 cattle served as controls. There was no false alarm during the experiment. The risk of dystocia (Score >1) was 1.9 times higher, the prevalence of stillbirth was 19.8 times higher, the risk of retained fetal membranes (RFM) was 2.8 times higher and the risk of clinical metritis was 10.5 times higher in the control group than in the experimental group. The prevalence of stillbirth was 7 times higher in cows with dystocia compared to cows with eutocia. The presence of dystocia and stillbirth increased the risk of RFM 4 and 5 times, respectively. The occurrence of RFM increased the risk of development of clinical metritis with a 22 times higher odds. The results indicate that the use of calving alert systems not only facilitates controlling the time of parturition and providing prompt and appropriate calving assistance but also decreases the number of dystocia cases and improves reproductive efficiency, postpartum health of the dam and newborn calf survival

Difficulties and Perspectives of Immunomodulatory Therapy with Mistletoe Lectins and Standardized Mistletoe Extracts in Evidence-Based Medicine

Viscum album preparations are aqueous mistletoe plant extracts used in complementary and alternative medicine as immunomodulators in cancer therapy. However, evidence of immunological efficacy of mistletoe extracts (MEs) used in clinical trials is often lacking. Mechanisms involved in anti-tumor properties of ME and mistletoe lectins (MLs) modify both innate and adaptive immune systems, according to animal model experiments. In the background of these effects, a selective binding of ML on CD75 ganglioside receptors of interleukin 12 (IL-12)-producing macrophages or dendritic cells can play an important role. Immunological effects of ME correlate with their lectin activity, showing a bell-shaped dose-response curve of efficacy. Therefore, a correct determination of MLs for the standardization of commercial ME is essential. However, plant MLs exhibit heterogeneity, which most likely results from post-translational processing. In addition, amino acid analysis of ML has revealed numerous conservative substitutions along their amino acid sequence. Consequently, ML research needs new perspectives, and the advantages and disadvantages of purified and biologically better defined ML preparations are also discussed in this article

Inclusive J/ψ production at mid-rapidity in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 TeV

Inclusive J/ψ production is studied in minimum-bias proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 5.02 TeV by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The measurement is performed at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9) in the dielectron decay channel down to zero transverse momentum pT, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Lint = 19.4 ± 0.4 nb−1. The measured pT-integrated inclusive J/ψ production cross sec- tion is dσ/dy = 5.64 ± 0.22(stat.) ± 0.33(syst.) ± 0.12(lumi.) μb. The pT-differential cross section d2σ/dpTdy is measured in the pT range 0–10 GeV/c and compared with state-of- the-art QCD calculations. The J/ψ 〈pT〉 and 〈pT2〉 are extracted and compared with results obtained at other collision energies. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Protecting Effects of Dexamethasone on Thymus of Rats with Severe Acute Pancreatitis

Purpose. To study the protecting effects of dexamethasone on thymus of rats with severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). Methods. The SAP rats were randomly assigned to the model group and dexamethasone-treated group, the other normal healthy rats were assigned to the sham operation group. The rat survival, thymus pathological changes, apoptotic index, as well as expression levels of NF-κB, P-selectin, Bax, Bcl-2, and Caspase-3 protein of all groups were observed, respectively, at 3 hours, 6 hours, and 12 hours. The contents of amylase and endotoxin in plasma as well as the contents of TNF-α, PLA2, and NO in serum were determined. Results. There was no marked difference between the model group and treated group in survival. The contents of different indexes in blood of treated group were lower than those of the model group to various degrees at different time points. The thymus pathological score was lower in treated group than in model group at 12 hours.The treated group in Caspase-3 protein expression of thymus significantly exceeded the model group at 12 hours. The apoptotic index was significantly higher in treated group than in model group. Conclusion. Dexamethasone has protecting effects on thymus of SAP rats
