    Exploration of Marine Resources by Photographic Remote Sensing

    The interpretation of photographs in oceanographic remote sensing is discussed. The photographs were made from spacecraft with two exceptions. Two photographs were made from aircraft. There were three types of film used to make the photographs: black-and-white, color, and color IR. Black and white photography is well known; it presents pictures in various shades of gray from black to white. Color film presents pictures in color, very nearly as the human eye sees them. Color IR film presents pictures in color also but not as seen by the human eye. Blue becomes much deeper blue, green is suppressed to some extent, and red is recorded beyond the visual range of the human eye, out in the near infrared. The most noticeable effect of the use of color IR film is that leaf materials which are highly reflective in the infrared part of the spectrum are presented as red

    A generalization of moderated statistics to data adaptive semiparametric estimation in high-dimensional biology

    The widespread availability of high-dimensional biological data has made the simultaneous screening of numerous biological characteristics a central statistical problem in computational biology. While the dimensionality of such datasets continues to increase, the problem of teasing out the effects of biomarkers in studies measuring baseline confounders while avoiding model misspecification remains only partially addressed. Efficient estimators constructed from data adaptive estimates of the data-generating distribution provide an avenue for avoiding model misspecification; however, in the context of high-dimensional problems requiring simultaneous estimation of numerous parameters, standard variance estimators have proven unstable, resulting in unreliable Type-I error control under standard multiple testing corrections. We present the formulation of a general approach for applying empirical Bayes shrinkage approaches to asymptotically linear estimators of parameters defined in the nonparametric model. The proposal applies existing shrinkage estimators to the estimated variance of the influence function, allowing for increased inferential stability in high-dimensional settings. A methodology for nonparametric variable importance analysis for use with high-dimensional biological datasets with modest sample sizes is introduced and the proposed technique is demonstrated to be robust in small samples even when relying on data adaptive estimators that eschew parametric forms. Use of the proposed variance moderation strategy in constructing stabilized variable importance measures of biomarkers is demonstrated by application to an observational study of occupational exposure. The result is a data adaptive approach for robustly uncovering stable associations in high-dimensional data with limited sample sizes

    Using error correction to determine the noise model

    Quantum error correcting codes have been shown to have the ability of making quantum information resilient against noise. Here we show that we can use quantum error correcting codes as diagnostics to characterise noise. The experiment is based on a three-bit quantum error correcting code carried out on a three-qubit nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) quantum information processor. Utilizing both engineered and natural noise, the degree of correlations present in the noise affecting a two-qubit subsystem was determined. We measured a correlation factor of c=0.5+/-0.2 using the error correction protocol, and c=0.3+/-0.2 using a standard NMR technique based on coherence pathway selection. Although the error correction method demands precise control, the results demonstrate that the required precision is achievable in the liquid-state NMR setting.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures.     How to Work Collaboratively Within the Health System: Workshop Summary and Facilitator Reflection

    Effectiveness in health services research requires development of specific knowledge and skills for working in partnership with health system decision-makers. In an initial effort to frame capacity-building activities for researchers, we designed a workshop on working collaboratively within the health system. The workshop, based on recent research exploring health system experience and perspectives on research collaborations, was trialed at the annual Canadian Health Services and Policy Research (CAHSPR) conference in May 2019. Participants reported positive evaluations of the workshop. However, further efforts should target health services researchers that may not be as motivated to develop skills in collaborative research. Additional attention to equipping researchers with the skills needed to work in partnerships is recommended, including approaches and materials that avoid oversimplification of complex challenges
