    The framing of green innovations—a comparative topic modeling study on the public frames of the electric vehicle in Germany and UK

    In the innovation framing literature, scholars argue that green innovations are being challenged by legitimacy barriers associated with strong lock-in effects on the fossil-based economy. To break down barriers and create legitimacy, we stress the role of demarcation frames. Demarcation frames we argue are an important supplement to the established framing mechanisms that signal alignment and similarity with existing systems. Building on a machine-learning topic modeling approach, we investigate the development of the perception and meaning of the electric vehicle over a period of 27 years—i.e., its framing. By using public media data to undertake a systematic cross-country study in Germany and the UK, we show how and through which combinations of framing mechanisms the electric vehicle overcame the initial skepticism that was closely linked to the internal combustion vehicle. Hence, our research contributes to a better understanding of the framing processes around green innovations in the carbon-based economy. Firstly, we offer a novel analytical perspective focusing on the overarching public framing of green innovations. Secondly, we contribute to the literature by describing the theoretical implications and functionality of demarcation frames to overcome lock-ins. And thirdly, we discuss policy implications to support the dissemination of green innovations and propose future research avenues relevant for the green innovation and innovation framing field

    Institutional theory-based research on Corporate Social Responsibility: Bringing values back in

    Research applying institutional theory to corporate social responsibility (CSR) has experienced remarkable momentum. Institutional theory-based CSR research illustrates the role of values in guiding both agentic choices for CSR and the influence of institutional structures on CSR agency. Although values have been explored in this literature, systematic studies of values that seek to gain insights into the mutual relationship between agentic choices and structures are lacking. Such insights are crucial for exploring whether and how CSR is enabled or constrained. We thus ask two interrelated questions: (1) What is the role of values in institutional theory-based CSR research? (2) How and along which avenues should future institutional theory-based CSR research that focuses on values be mobilised? Based on our analysis of this line of literature from 1989 until 2021, first, we take stock of established institutional theory perspectives on CSR and disentangle what role values have played in this literature. Second, we outline how to mobilise values in future institutional CSR research based on four promising but under-investigated areas. From our literature analysis, two central functions emerge (which we label ‘bridging’ and ‘referencing’) that values can perform in the institutional analysis of CSR. Based on these two functions, our values-focused framework will help scholars examine the moral foundations that inform business–society interactions as well as understand how companies can responsibly manage those interactions with societal stakeholders

    Monte Arci Obsidians: Some More Geochemical Data from EMP-WDS, SEM-EDS and PIXE

    We bring new geochemical data on Monte Arci (Sardinia) obsidians from elemental analyses by electron microprobe (EMP) and proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Obsidians from the geochemical groups SA, SB1, SB2 and SC can be sorted out from their major element contents by EMP and from their trace element contents by PIXE. While EMP analysis requires for analysis a few milligrams polished fragment, PIXE is strictly non-destructive. Forty samples were part of a program aimed at the geochemical characterization of Monte Arci secondary sources

As a result of the work, studies were carried out on the effect of the physico-chemical properties of oil, the initial water cut, the intensity of mixing in the preparation of water-oil emulsions, and the effect of demulsifiers on the dynamics and efficiency of the emulsion settling process at various temperatures

    Morphological characterization of the human corneal epithelium by in vivo confocal laser scanning microscopy

    Background: Regarding the growing interest and importance of understanding the cellular changes of the cornea in diseases, a quantitative cellular characterization of the epithelium is becoming increasingly important. Towards this, the latest research offers considerable improvements in imaging of the cornea by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). This study presents a pipeline to generate normative morphological data of epithelial cell layers of healthy human corneas. Methods: 3D in vivo CLSM was performed on the eyes of volunteers (n=25) with a Heidelberg Retina Tomograph II equipped with an in-house modified version of the Rostock Cornea Module implementing two dedicated piezo actuators and a concave contact cap. Image data were acquired with nearly isotropic voxel resolution. After image registration, stacks of en-face sections were used to generate full-thickness volume data sets of the epithelium. Beyond that, an image analysis algorithm quantified en-face sections of epithelial cells regarding the depth-dependent mean of cell density, area, diameter, aggregation (Clark and Evans index of aggregation), neighbor count and polygonality. Results: Imaging and cell segmentation were successfully performed in all subjects. Thereby intermediated cells were efficiently recognized by the segmentation algorithm while efficiency for superficial and basal cells was reduced. Morphological parameters showed an increased mean cell density, decreased mean cell area and mean diameter from anterior to posterior (5,197.02 to 8,190.39 cells/mm²; 160.51 to 90.29 µm²; 15.9 to 12.3 µm respectively). Aggregation gradually increased from anterior to posterior ranging from 1.45 to 1.53. Average neighbor count increased from 5.50 to a maximum of 5.66 followed by a gradual decrease to 5.45 within the normalized depth from anterior to posterior. Polygonality gradually decreased ranging from 4.93 to 4.64 sides of cells. The neighbor count and polygonality parameters exhibited profound depth-dependent changes. Conclusions: This in vivo study demonstrates the successful implementation of a CLSM-based imaging pipeline for cellular characterization of the human corneal epithelium. The dedicated hardware in combination with an adapted image registration method to correct the remaining motion-induced image distortions followed by a dedicated algorithm to calculate characteristic quantities of different epithelial cell layers enabled the generation of normative data. Further significant effort is necessary to improve the algorithm for superficial and basal cell segmentation

    Burst of corneal dendritic cells during Trastuzumab and Paclitaxel treatment

    During breast cancer therapy, paclitaxel and trastuzumab are both associated with adverse effects such as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and other systemic side effects including ocular complications. Corneal nerves are considered part of the peripheral nervous system and can be imaged non-invasively by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) on the cellular level. Thus, in vivo CLSM imaging of structures of the corneal subbasal nerve plexus (SNP) such as sensory nerves or dendritic cells (DCs) can be a powerful tool for the assessment of corneal complications during cancer treatment. During the present study, the SNP of a breast cancer patient was analyzed over time by using large-scale in vivo CLSM in the course of paclitaxel and trastuzumab therapy. The same corneal regions could be re-identified over time. While the subbasal nerve morphology did not alter significantly, a change in dendritic cell density and an additional local burst within the first 11 weeks of therapy was detected, indicating treatment-mediated corneal inflammatory processes. Ocular structures such as nerves and dendritic cells could represent useful biomarkers for the assessment of ocular adverse effects during cancer therapy and their management, leading to a better visual prognosis
