    Tele-archaeology

    Tele-archaeology, in its basic sense, may be defined as the use of telecommunications to provide archaeological information and services. Two different kinds of technology make up most of the tele-archaeology applications in use today. The first is used for transferring information from one location to another. The other is multi-way interactive knowledge distribution. In this paper we examine the possibilities of tele-archaeology, and offer a general framework to implement this technology. The main positive effect of tele-archaeology is the move towards a real “distributed interactive archaeology”, which means that archaeological knowledge building is a collective and dynamic series of tasks and processes. An individual archaeologist cannot fully explain his/her data because the explanatory process needs knowledge as raw material, and this knowledge does not exist in the individual mind of the scientist but in the research community as a global set

    Changes in chemical attributes during ripening of traditional fermented sausage, "Pirot ironed"

    "Pirot ironed" is a traditional Serbian dry-fermented sausage manufactured in the southeast of Serbia. The changes in the chemical attributes of Pirot ironed sausage were followed during ripening. Samples were taken on the processing days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28. Pirot ironed sausage was produced from the most valuable cuts of beef and chevon, without addition of starter cultures or fat tissues. Sausages were manufactured in a traditional drying/ripening chamber, where they were pressed every two days to acquire the typical flat form and to speed up the drying. The final water activity was 0.839. The lowest pH value recorded was 5.30 on the processing day 28. During ripening, the water content decreased significantly from 74.72% to 40.32%, while the protein and the fat amounts increased significantly from 19.12% to 45.79% and from 1.22% to 6.21%, respectively. Up to now, the properties of Pirot ironed sausage have not been recognized or published in scientific literature in spite of the long tradition and popularity of this meat product in Serbia

    Les intervencions arqueològiques al jaciment neolític lacustre de La Draga 2014-2015 (Banyoles, Pla de l'Estany)

    Els treballs arqueològics desenvolupats durant l’any 2014-2015 han afectat un total de 148 metres quadrats. S’ha pogut documentar una dinàmica estratigràfica i de conservació similar a la documentada en les primeres campanyes d’excavacions dutes a terme a principis de la dècada del anys 90. El nivell superior es caracteritzar per un estrat torbós amb nombroses intrusions de materials d’època moderna i contemporània i que constituïa el sediment treballat pels hortolans fins a l’expropiació dels terrenys. El nivells inferiors estan bàsicament constituïts per nivells torbosos i argiles de tonalitat verdosa que cobreixen concentracions de blocs de travertins. Aquests blocs de travertins conformen acumulacions que assoleixen potències diverses i constitueixen estructures. Les estructures presenten diverses capes constituïdes bàsicament per blocs de travertins i restes arqueològiques de diversa natura com macrolític, ceràmica, estris lítics i ossis i fauna que és sense cap mena de dubte la més nombrosa. Entre el material cal destacar la presència molt abundant d’objectes d’ornament en diferents estadis de producció. Aquest fet permet interpretar que una zona d’aquest sector es podria tractar d’un espai de treballs dedicat a la confecció d’objectes d’ornament sobre malacofauna marina (Fig.5).     Raman study of insulating and conductive ZnO: (Al, Mn) thin films

    Raman spectroscopy results obtained for undoped and Al- and/or Mn-doped ZnO thin films produced by RF-sputtering are reported. The effect of the doping method (either co-sputtering or ion implantation), the dopant type and its concentration on the Raman-active vibrational modes in these films were studied in detail. The results are discussed with focus on the peak shifts and broadening, and on the doping-induced relaxation of the symmetry selection rules. A particular attention is paid to the 520-530 cm-1 Raman band observed in all Mn containing samples and a simple theoretical model and arguments are presented in support of its relation to the local (gap) phonon mode produced by Mn atoms substituting Zn in the cationic sublattice of the ZnO crystal.Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility (KNMF), a Helmholtz Research Infrastructure at KI

    Diagonalization of uncertainty matrix and minimization of Robertson inequality for n observables are considered. It is proved that for even n this relation is minimized in states which are eigenstates of n/2 independent complex linear combinations of the observables. In case of canonical observables this eigenvalue condition is also necessary. Such minimizing states are called Robertson intelligent states (RIS). The group related coherent states (CS) with maximal symmetry (for semisimple Lie groups) are particular case of RIS for the quadratures of Weyl generators. Explicit constructions of RIS are considered for operators of su(1,1), su(2), h_N and sp(N,R) algebras. Unlike the group related CS, RIS can exhibit strong squeezing of group generators. Multimode squared amplitude squeezed states are naturally introduced as sp(N,R) RIS. It is shown that the uncertainty matrices for quadratures of q-deformed boson operators a_{q,j} (q > 0) and of any k power of a_j = a_{1,j} are positive definite and can be diagonalized by symplectic linear transformations.     Influence of surface morphology on erosion of plasma-facing components in H-mode plasmas of ASDEX Upgrade

    Net erosion of plasma-facing materials was investigated at the low-field-side (outer) strike-point area of the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) divertor during H-mode discharges with small and frequent ELMs. To this end, Au and Mo marker samples with different surface morphologies and geometries were exposed to plasmas using the DIMII divertor manipulator. The results were compared to existing erosion and deposition patterns from various Land H-mode experiments, in the latter case the main difference was the size and frequency of the ELMs. We noticed that increasing surface roughness reduces net erosion but less than what is the case in L-mode. On the other hand, net-erosion rates in H-mode are generally 2–5 times higher than the corresponding L-mode values, in addition to which exposure in H-mode conditions results in strong local variations in the poloidal and toroidal erosion/deposition profiles. The latter observation we associate with the large migration length, on the order of several cm, of the eroded material, resulting in strong competition between erosion and re-deposition processes especially at poloidal distances > 50 mm from the strike point. Considerable net erosion was measured throughout the analysed poloidal region unlike in L-mode where the main erosion peak occurs in the vicinity of the strike point. We attribute this qualitative difference to the slow decay lengths of the plasma flux and electron temperature in the applied H-mode scenario. Both erosion and deposition require detailed analyses at the microscopic scale and the deposition patterns may be drastically different for heavy and light impurities. Generally, the rougher the surface the more material will accumulate on locally shadowed regions behind protruding surface features. However, rough surfaces also exhibit more non-uniformities in the quality or even integrity of marker coatings produced on them, thus complicating the analyses of the experimental data. We conclude that local plasma parameters have a huge impact on the PFC erosion rates and, besides incident plasma flux, surface morphology and its temporal evolution have to be taken into account for quantitative estimates of erosion rates and PFC lifetime under reactor-relevant conditions

    Amyloid, tau, and astrocyte pathology in autosomal-dominant Alzheimer’s disease variants: AβPParc and PSEN1DE9

    Autosomal-dominant Alzheimer’s disease (ADAD) may be associated with atypical amyloid beta deposits in the brain. In vivo amyloid imaging using 11C-Pittsburgh compound B (PiB) tracer has shown differences in binding between brains from ADAD and sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (sAD) patients. To gain further insight into the various pathological characteristics of these genetic variants, we performed large frozen hemisphere autoradiography and brain homogenate binding assays with 3H-PiB, 3H-MK6240-3H-THK5117, and 3H-deprenyl for detection of amyloid fibrils, tau depositions, and activated astrocytes, respectively, in two AβPParc mutation carriers, one PSEN1ΔE9 mutation carrier, and three sAD cases. The results were compared with Abeta 40, Abeta 42, AT8, and GFAP immunostaining, respectively, as well as with Congo red and Bielschowsky. PiB showed a very low binding in AβPParc. A high binding was observed in PSEN1ΔE9 and in sAD tissues but with different binding patterns. Comparable 3H-THK5117 and 3H-deprenyl brain homogenate binding was observed for AβPParc, PSEN1ΔE9, and sAD, respectively. Some differences were observed between 3H-MK6240 and 3H-THK5117 in ADAD. A positive correlation between 3H-deprenyl and 3H-THK5117 binding was observed in AβPParc, while no such correlation was found in PSEN1ΔE9 and sAD. Our study demonstrates differences in the properties of the amyloid plaques between two genetic variants of AD and sAD. Despite the lack of measurable amyloid fibrils by PiB in the AβPParc cases, high regional tau and astrocyte binding was observed. The lack of correlation between 3H-deprenyl and 3H-THK5117 binding in PSEN1ΔE9 and sAD in contrast of the positive correlation observed in the AβPParc cases suggest differences in the pathological cascade between variants of AD that warrant further exploration in vivo

    Massive Black Hole Binary Inspirals: Results from the LISA Parameter Estimation Taskforce

    The LISA Parameter Estimation (LISAPE) Taskforce was formed in September 2007 to provide the LISA Project with vetted codes, source distribution models, and results related to parameter estimation. The Taskforce's goal is to be able to quickly calculate the impact of any mission design changes on LISA's science capabilities, based on reasonable estimates of the distribution of astrophysical sources in the universe. This paper describes our Taskforce's work on massive black-hole binaries (MBHBs). Given present uncertainties in the formation history of MBHBs, we adopt four different population models, based on (i) whether the initial black-hole seeds are small or large, and (ii) whether accretion is efficient or inefficient at spinning up the holes. We compare four largely independent codes for calculating LISA's parameter-estimation capabilities. All codes are based on the Fisher-matrix approximation, but in the past they used somewhat different signal models, source parametrizations and noise curves. We show that once these differences are removed, the four codes give results in extremely close agreement with each other. Using a code that includes both spin precession and higher harmonics in the gravitational-wave signal, we carry out Monte Carlo simulations and determine the number of events that can be detected and accurately localized in our four population models.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures, 5 tables, minor changes to match version to be published in the proceedings of the 7th LISA Symposium.
