The Use of the L1 in a CLIL Lesson in Secondary Education in Galicia
[Abstract] During the last decades, many steps have been taken towards the promotion of plurilingualism in Galicia. One of the most widespread initiatives undertaken in this autonomous community is the creation of bilingual sections and plurilingual educational institutions network in 2010 in Early Stages, Primary and Secondary Education across the autonomous community. As a unifying element, they follow the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology: a non-linguistic content subject is taught in a foreign language. However, the language of instruction is not the only one used in these lessons; the L1 is sometimes present in CLIL. Despite previous misconceptions on whether using the L1 in foreign language lessons would be counterproductive, research has proved that CLIL may benefit from a certain coexistence of both languages (Méndez García & Pavón Vázquez, 2012). Contrary to the idea of L1 usage due to poor language proficiency, the appearance of both languages in students’ and CLIL teachers’ speech may point to a deeper understanding of both languages. In our discussion of this topic we will refer the concept of ‘translanguaging’, which can be useful to understand the use of different languages in the Galician CLIL sections. Therefore, this study endeavours to analyse the use of the L1 (Spanish-Galician) and L2 (English) as a code-switching practice in a CLIL Secondary Education context. Within this framework, Bloom’s taxonomy of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) and LOTS (Lower Order Thinking Skills) (Bloom, 1956) will be accounted in order to assess the type of spoken productions and how code-switching is influenced by said thinking skills.
Comparative Study on Speaking Assessment Rubrics in Trinity and Cambridge Language Certificates: Adaptation to the Common European Framework Guidelines
[Abstract] The European Council has been instrumental in the standardization of language competence levels and certifications with the guidelines provided in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) published in 2001 and later reviewed in 2020 with the Companion Volume with New Descriptors (CEFRCV). Cambridge Assessment English and Trinity College are two of the highest regarded institutions at the international level that grant their language certificates following the language competence levels provided by the CEFR. For this reason, the current study is grounded on the conviction that those certificates should meet certain principles of the Framework as a form of guarantee that they are assessing the CEFR level correctly. In particular, this paper focuses on the speaking skill and the rubrics of assessment used by the two afore-mentioned institutions. The rubrics of Trinity and Cambridge for the assessment of the oral production at the B2 CEFR level were considered for the purposes of this study – in particular, the rubrics that assess the oral production in the Integrated Skills in English (ISE-II) exam and in the First Certificate in English (B2 First). With a qualitative document research approach, this study analyses these rubrics in order to determine to what extent they respect the criteria established by the CEFR
Just out of the printing plates comes an edition of the unpublished comedy by José Luis Alonso de Santos, which has a title that is as suggestive as it is enigmatic,"The Devil, the world and my flesh" edited by Abraham Madroñal. The juxtaposition of the terms that make up the title offer the reader an idea of the main lines plot of a comedy that closes a trilogy composed of two other works, "Long live the duke, our lord!" and "The combat of Don Carnal and Doña Cuaresma", linked by a group of traveling comedians of the Golden Age led by Lope . With this trilogy, as pointed out by Abraham Madroñal, the author intends to give a vision about the beginnings of the itinerant theater in our country. Expectativas y necesidades formativas
Spanish education authorities are promoting multilingualism through bilingual and multilingual programmes, with an increasing focus on teaching Physical Education (PE) through the use of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in schools. Although there have been several studies exploring the effects of this interaction, most focus on the perceptions of practising teachers or on the evaluation of bilingual programmes, leaving a gap in relation to initial teacher training. The aim of this quantitative study is to understand prospective PE teachers' perceptions of their training needs and their readiness to teach PE through a FL. For this purpose, a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational design was used involving 160 students in their third and fourth year of the degree course in Primary Education with a specialisation in PE at the University of A Coruña. Data were collected through a quantitative questionnaire. The results of the study indicate that students do not feel competent in the use of a FL and consider that they do not receive sufficient training to use it as a vehicle for instruction in PE.

Action research in the communicative language classroom: using alternative assessment techniques with efl secondary-school students
The Council of Europe, through the
Common European Framework of Reference for
Language, Teaching and Assessment (CEFRL),
has been promoting communicative competence
since 2001. This boost has introduced some
changes in the teaching-learning process of English
as a Foreign Language is Spain: the methodological
use of the communicative approach in
the classrooms, the practice of the four skills in
the class, and the theoretical implications that
Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences theory has in the
planning and design of classroom activities. But,
in spite of that, academic results are still not very
remarkable and the rates of academic failure are
not decreasing since English is still a challenging
subject for many Secondary School students. In
addition, test evaluation is still the predominant
assessment method in most of the schools. The
current case study intends to provide the educational
community with some results obtained
from the implementation of some alternative assessment
and evaluation methods in an actual
high-school in Spain.
Effects of Enteromyxum spp. (Myxozoa) infection in the regulation of intestinal E‐cadherin: Turbot against gilthead sea bream
This is the peer reviewed version of the following article: Ronza, P, Estensoro, I, Bermúdez, R, et al. Effects of Enteromyxum spp. (Myxozoa) infection in the regulation of intestinal E‐cadherin: Turbot against gilthead sea bream. J Fish Dis. 2020; 43: 337– 346, which has been published in final form at https://doi.org/10.1111/jfd.13130. This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with Wiley Terms and Conditions for Use of Self-Archived VersionsEnteromyxoses are relevant diseases for turbot and gilthead sea bream aquaculture. The myxozoan parasites invade the intestinal mucosa, causing a cachectic syndrome associated with intestinal barrier alteration; nonetheless, their pathological impact is different. Turbot infected by Enteromyxum scophthalmi develop more severe intestinal lesions, reaching mortality rates of 100%, whereas in E. leei‐infected gilthead sea bream, the disease progresses slowly, and mortality rates are lower. The mechanisms underlying the different pathogenesis are still unclear. We studied the distribution and expression changes of E‐cadherin, a highly conserved protein of the adherens junctions, in the intestine of both species by immunohistochemistry and quantitative PCR, using the same immunohistochemical protocol and common primers. The regular immunostaining pattern observed in control fish turned into markedly irregular in parasitized turbot, showing an intense immunoreaction at the host–parasite interface. Nevertheless, E‐cadherin gene expression was not significantly modulated in this species. On the contrary, no evident changes in the protein distribution were noticed in gilthead sea bream, whereas a significant gene downregulation occurred in advanced infection. The results contribute to the understanding of the different host–parasite interactions in enteromyxoses. Host and parasite cells appear to establish diverse relationships in these species, which could underlie the different pathological pictureThis work has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the projects AGL2015‐67039‐C3‐1‐R, AGL2015‐67039‐C3‐3‐R and AGL‐2013‐48560‐R and by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme through ParaFishControl Project (634429).
