Time-sequenced Multi-Radio-Frequency Observations of Cygnus X-3 in Flare
Multifrequency observations from the VLA, VLBA and OVRO Millimeter Array of a
major radio outburst of Cygnus X-3 in 2001 September are presented, measuring
the evolution of the spectrum of the source over three decades in frequency,
over a period of six days. Following the peak of the flare, as the intensity
declines the high-frequency spectrum at frequency nu steepens from nu^{-0.4} to
nu^{-0.6}, after which the spectral index remains at this latter terminal
value; a trend previously observed but hitherto not satisfactorily explained.
VLBA observations, for the first time, track over several days the expansion of
a sequence of knots whose initial diameters are approximately 8
milliarcseconds. The light-crossing time within these plasmons is of the same
order as the time-scale over which the spectrum is observed to evolve. We
contend that properly accounting for light-travel time effects in and between
plasmons which are initially optically thick, but which after expansion become
optically thin, explains the key features of the spectral evolution, for
example the observed timescale. Using the VLBA images, we have directly
measured for the first time the proper motions of individual knots, analysis of
which shows a two-sided jet whose axis is precessing. The best-fit jet speed is
roughly beta = 0.63 and the precession period is about 5 days, significantly
lower than fitted for a previous flare. Extrapolation of the positions of the
knots measured by the VLBA back to zero-separation shows this to occur
approximately 2.5 days after the detection of the rise in flux density of

Self as a Teaching Tool: Exploring Power and Anti-oppressive Practice with Counselling/Psychotherapy Students
Counselling and psychotherapy training often incorporates experiential learning to help students understand and explore different aspects of self. Lecturers and tutors, facilitating such courses, can also share aspects of their lived experience, as a form of experiential learning. This paper describes a workshop on power and anti-oppressive practice that was delivered to counseling students on an MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice. Two lecturers (Beverley and Peter) used their lived experiences of racism and homophobia to stimulate student discussion and debate – effectively, they were using self as a teaching tool. This paper details their experiences and reflections whilst in discussion with two students (Ann-Marie and Ben), who attended the workshop
Opacity effects and shock-in-jet modelling of low-level activity in Cygnus X-3
We present simultaneous dual-frequency radio observations of Cygnus X-3 during a phase of low-level activity. We constrain the minimum variability time-scale to be 20 min at 43 GHz and 30 min at 15 GHz, implying source sizes of 2-4 au. We detect polarized emission at a level of a few per cent at 43 GHz which varies with the total intensity. The delay of ∼10 min between the peaks of the flares at the two frequencies is seen to decrease with time, and we find that synchrotron self-absorption and free-free absorption by entrained thermal material play a larger role in determining the opacity than absorption in the stellar wind of the companion. A shock-in-jet model gives a good fit to the light curves at all frequencies, demonstrating that this mechanism, which has previously been used to explain the brighter, longer lived giant outbursts in this source, is also applicable to these low-level flaring events. Assembling the data from outbursts spanning over two orders of magnitude in flux density shows evidence for a strong correlation between the peak brightness of an event, and the time-scale and frequency at which this is attained. Brighter flares evolve on longer time-scales and peak at lower frequencies. Analysis of the fitted model parameters suggests that brighter outbursts are due to shocks forming further downstream in the jet, with an increased electron normalization and magnetic field strength both playing a role in setting the strength of the outburs
Prototyping open digital tools for urban commoning
The paper will discuss an experimental co-design approach to the development of a digital toolkit prototype and a resulting set of co-design principles, which are put forward as a way of infrastructuring future design of digital tools for urban commoning. Focus is placed on the case study of a commoning hub in a Parisian suburb where the toolkit was co-designed through a series of prototyping workshops, carried out with hub users and addressing key hub needs. The prototyping process explored possibilities for re-appropriating and re-framing existing digital technologies as open toolkits, which can be further re-purposed by users, here and beyond, after the design of an initial toolkit prototype
Radio morphology and spectral analysis of cD galaxies in rich and poor galaxy clusters
We present a radio morphological study and spectral analysis for a sample of
13 cD galaxies in rich and poor clusters of galaxies.} Our study is based on
new high sensitivity Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations at
1.28 GHz, 610 MHz and 235 MHz, and on archival data. From a statistical sample
of cluster cD galaxies we selected those sources with little information
available in the literature and promising for the detection of aged radio
emission. Beyond the high sensitivity images for all 13 radio galaxies, we
present also a detailed spectral analysis for 7 of them. We found a variety of
morphologies and linear sizes, as typical for radio galaxies in the radio power
range sampled here (low to intermediate power radio galaxies). The spectral
analysis shows that 10/13 radio galaxies have steep radio spectrum, with
spectral index . In general, the radiative ages and growth
velocities are consistent with previous findings that the evolution of radio
galaxies at the cluster centres is affected by the dense external medium (i.e.
low growth velocities and old ages. We suggest that the dominant galaxies in A
2622 and MKW 03s are dying radio sources, which at present are not fed by
nuclear activity. On the other hand, the spectacular source at the centre of A
2372 might be a very interesting example of restarted radio galaxy. For this

Role of the mesoamygdaloid dopamine projection in emotional learning
Amygdala dopamine is crucially involved in the acquisition of Pavlovian associations, as measured via conditioned approach to the location of the unconditioned stimulus (US). However, learning begins before skeletomotor output, so this study assessed whether amygdala dopamine is also involved in earlier 'emotional' learning. A variant of the conditioned reinforcement (CR) procedure was validated where training was restricted to curtail the development of selective conditioned approach to the US location, and effects of amygdala dopamine manipulations before training or later CR testing assessed. Experiment 1a presented a light paired (CS+ group) or unpaired (CS- group) with a US. There were 1, 2 or 10 sessions, 4 trials per session. Then, the US was removed, and two novel levers presented. One lever (CR+) presented the light, and lever pressing was recorded. Experiment 1b also included a tone stimulus. Experiment 2 applied intra-amygdala R(+) 7-OH-DPAT (10 nmol/1.0 A mu l/side) before two training sessions (Experiment 2a) or a CR session (Experiment 2b). For Experiments 1a and 1b, the CS+ group preferred the CR+ lever across all sessions. Conditioned alcove approach during 1 or 2 training sessions or associated CR tests was low and nonspecific. In Experiment 2a, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT before training greatly diminished lever pressing during a subsequent CR test, preferentially on the CR+ lever. For Experiment 2b, R(+) 7-OH-DPAT infusions before the CR test also reduced lever pressing. Manipulations of amygdala dopamine impact the earliest stage of learning in which emotional reactions may be most prevalent
