    Navigating the maze: Qualitative research methodologies and their philosophical foundations

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this recordObjectives: One of the three objectives of the Society and College of Radiographers is the promotion and dissemination of research in radiography and radiotherapy. This article aims to assist in the production of high standard research by explaining how transparency in reporting the underpinning philosophical basis of a qualitative study can be achieved in addition to the more customary descriptions of how data were collected and analysed. Key findings: Unlike their quantitative equivalent, qualitative research methodologies are less well understood and reported in radiography research, in particular the philosophical and epistemological assumptions which underpin the methods used. Conclusion: Demonstrating consistency between the philosophical position taken and the methods used within a study is an important aspect of research quality. Implications for practice: Qualitative research can offer valuable insights into the social, organisational, behavioural and interpersonal aspects of medical imaging practice. These may include wellbeing, attitudes, perceptions and beliefs, leadership, management practices, education, professionalism and a wide range of issues around patients' experiences during medical imaging. Patient care and outcomes can be positively impacted as a result of acquiring these insights

    “It's what's behind the mask”: Psychological diversity in compassionate patient care

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this record Introduction: The Francis Report recommended an increased focus on compassion in healthcare, and recognition and non-judgmental acceptance of diversity is fundamental in compassionate patient care. The aim of this study was to achieve a wider understanding of diversity that includes individual patient needs, expectations, perceptions and feelings during diagnostic imaging. Methods: Using thirty-four semi-structured interviews with individual patients, this qualitative study explored their experiences of undergoing diagnostic radiography examinations and asked what compassionate care meant to them and how it is perceived and manifested in the brief, task-focussed and highly technical diagnostic projection imaging encounter. Data were analysed using Thematic Analysis. Results: Four key themes were identified from the analysis; these were: feelings and vulnerability; hidden emotions; professionalism and valued qualities and communication. Conclusion: Diversity is defined not only in terms of socio-cultural differences but also psychological ones, i.e. individual emotional and attitudinal characteristics, some of which may be consciously or unconsciously concealed. In order that patients are treated equitably and all of their care needs met, recommendations include a broader focus in education and training to include adapting communication skills and techniques in perception and expression of non-verbal cues. Further research into the pressures specific to the time-pressured, task-focussed, highly technical and rapid turnover environment of projection imaging radiography and how this impacts upon compassionate patient care would make a useful contribution to the field

    Nanoelectromechanical relay without pull-in instability for high-temperature non-volatile memory

    Emerging applications such as the Internet-of-Things and more-electric aircraft require electronics with integrated data storage that can operate in extreme temperatures with high energy efficiency. As transistor leakage current increases with temperature, nanoelectromechanical relays have emerged as a promising alternative. However, a reliable and scalable non-volatile relay that retains its state when powered off has not been demonstrated. Part of the challenge is electromechanical pull-in instability, causing the beam to snap in after traversing a section of the airgap. Here we demonstrate an electrostatically actuated nanoelectromechanical relay that eliminates electromechanical pull-in instability without restricting the dynamic range of motion. It has several advantages over conventional electrostatic relays, including low actuation voltages without extreme reduction in critical dimensions and near constant actuation airgap while the device moves, for improved electrostatic control. With this nanoelectromechanical relay we demonstrate the first high-temperature non-volatile relay operation, with over 40 non-volatile cycles at 200 ∘C

    What medical imaging professionals talk about when they talk about compassion

The final version is available from Elsevier via the DOI in this recordBackground Compassion is a poorly understood concept in Medical Imaging research, but an increase in its focus was recommended in the Francis Report (2013). Little research has been conducted in this area to date. Methods The project was conducted from within a constructivist paradigm with appropriate ethical approval. As part of a wider doctoral study, data were harvested from a Twitter journal club discussion between medical imaging professionals of the author's published literature review and one focus group of post-graduate radiographers. Data were transcribed and analysed thematically. Results Compassion in DI is conceptualised according to three themes constructed from the data: 1) Perceptible elements of the procedure; 2) Underlying qualities, skills and abilities of radiographers; 3) Moral and ethical foundations. When medical imaging professionals talk about compassion they talk about its importance in professional practice, the challenges faced in giving compassionate care and the strategies they employ to cope with the emotional as well as physical demands they face. Contradictory organisational values and an over-emphasis on individuals’ responsibility for providing compassionate care were also highlighted. Ethical professional practice need not necessarily include in every interaction expressions of compassion, or feelings in a medical imaging professional of caring about their patient. Conclusion The concept of compassion has depth, with surface appearances underpinned by moral values and behaviour-motivating drivers. These findings offer a clearer understanding of compassion that could inform radiographic practice and education

    Rethinking globalised resistance : feminist activism and critical theorising in international relations

    This article argues that a feminist approach to the 'politics of resistance' offers a number of important empirical insights which, in turn, open up lines of theoretical inquiry which critical theorists in IR would do well to explore. Concretely, we draw on our ongoing research into feminist 'anti-globalisation' activism to rethink the nature of the subject of the politics of resistance, the conditions under which resistance emerges and how resistance is enacted and expressed. We begin by discussing the relationship of feminism to critical IR theory as a way of situating and explaining the focus and approach of our research project. We then summarise our key empirical arguments regarding the emergence, structure, beliefs, identities and practices of feminist 'anti-globalisation' activism before exploring the implications of these for a renewed critical theoretical agenda in IR

    Performance Analysis of Nanoelectromechanical Relay-Based Field-Programmable Gate Arrays

    The energy consumption of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) is dominated by leakage currents and dynamic energy associated with programmable interconnect. An FPGA built entirely from nanoelectromechanical (NEM) relays can effectively eliminate leakage energy losses, reduce the interconnect dynamic energy, operate at temperatures &gt;225 °C and tolerate radiation doses in excess of 100 Mrad, while hybrid FPGAs comprising both complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) transistors and NEM relays (NEM-CMOS) have the potential to realize improvements in performance and energy efficiency. Large-scale integration of NEM relays, however, poses a significant engineering challenge due to the presence of moving parts. We discuss the design of FPGAs utilizing NEM relays based on a heterogeneous 3-D integration scheme, and carry out a scaling study to quantify key metrics related to performance and energy efficiency in both NEM-only and NEM-CMOS FPGAs. We show how the integration scheme has a profound effect on these metrics by changing the length of global wires. The scaling regime beyond which net performance and energy benefits is seen in NEM-CMOS over a baseline 90 nm CMOS technology is defined by an effective relay beam length of 0.5 μm , on-resistance of 200 kΩ , and a via pitch of 0.4 μm , all achievable with existing process technology. For ultra-low energy applications that are not performance critical, NEM-only FPGAs can provide close to 15× improvement in energy efficiency.QC 20180412</p

    Voice, autonomy and utopian desire in participatory film-making with young refugees

    This article is a reflection on what reflexive documentary scholars call the ‘moral dimension’ (Nash 2012: 318) of a participatory filmmaking project with refugee young people, who wanted to make a film to support other new young arrivals in the process of making home in Scotland. In the first part, we highlight some of the challenges of collaborating with refugee young people, in light of the often de-humanising representations of refugees in mainstream media and the danger of the triple conflation of authenticity-voice-pain in academic narratives about refugees. In the second part, we show how honouring young people’s desire to convey the hopeful aspects of making home, emerged as a key pedagogical strategy to affirm their expert position and encourage their participation in the project. Revisiting key moments of learning and interaction, we demonstrate how young people’s process of ‘finding a voice’ in moment-by-moment filmmaking practice was not a linear, developmental process towards ‘pure’ individual empowerment and singular artistic expression. Their participation in shaping their visual (self-)representation in the final film, was embedded in the dialogical process and pragmatic requirements of a collaborative film production, in which voice, autonomy and teacher authority were negotiated on a moment-by-moment basis. We conclude that it is vital for a reflexive practice and research to not gloss over the moral dilemmas in the name of progressive ideals, for example, when representations are co-created by project filmmakers/educators, but embrace these deliberations as part of the ‘fascinating collaborative matrix’ (Chambers 2019: 29) of participatory filmmaking

It has been determined that deformation’s speed in the rocks of medium-scale metamorphism was 15 meters over the entire circadian period. The average speed of deformation’s travel in the shale rocks is 10 meters over the entire circadian period and in the sandstone is 15 meters over the entire circadian period. During the recurring undermining the speed travel of deformations is 17 meters over the entire circadian period
