Toward a Broader View of Security Protocols

    Get PDF
Computer and network security researchers usually focus on the security of computers and networks. Although it might seem as if there is more than enough insecurity here to keep all of us fully occupied for the foreseeable future, this narrow view of our domain may actually be contributing to the very problems that we are trying to solve. We miss important insights from, and opportunities to make contributions to, a larger world that has been grappling with security since long before the computer was invented

Reform and resistance: an indigenous perspective on proposed changes to the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972 (WA)

    Get PDF
This article provides a critical analysis of some of the seven proposals put forward to regulate and amend the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1972. Reference is made throughout to Aboriginal heritage legislation in other Australian jurisdictions. We do not mean to suggest any of this legislation is ideal, as we are aware that Indigenous people throughout Australia have concerns about the level of protection being given to their heritage. We are seeking to show, however, that many of the measures that have been introduced in other jurisdictions—some of which have been criticised as being inadequate by the local Aboriginal people—do not exist at all in Western Australia (‘WA’)

The Effects of Social Support and Self-Efficacy on Academic Performance

    Get PDF
This item is only available electronically. The links between self-efficacy, social support, and academic achievement are well supported in the literature. The number of people, and the perceived satisfaction with the support they offer, is positively correlated with academic achievement, as it reduces stress and influences an individual’s choice of coping mechanism. Self-efficacy influences grades by establishing positive behavioural patterns that result in individuals exerting more effort on a given task among other things. And, with increasing emphasis being placed on individual academic achievement, any and all potential aids must be considered in an attempt to attain good marks. The relationship between social support, self-efficacy, and academic achievement is understudied in Australia. It was theorised that individuals with higher levels of these two factors would do better in an end of semester exam. Participants were drawn from the 1st year psychology cohort at Adelaide university and completed measures measuring demographic factors as well as the measures measuring social support, self-efficacy, and control variables. Results from correlational analyses comparing variables and exam marks were all non-significant, except for intelligence. Possible reasons for these results are discussed, as well as future directions for research in this area.Thesis (B.PsychSc(Hons)) -- University of Adelaide, School of Psychology, 201

A Passage to Bowling Green: A Chronological Exploration of James Baldwin’s Connection to BGSU’s Ethnic Studies Department

James Baldwin became connected to Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) Ethnic Studies Department starting in the late 1970s, making four visits to campus, once as a guest speaker, once as a Write-in-Residence, and twice as a Distinguished Visiting Professor. The purpose of this paper is to understand how the relationship between BGSU and Baldwin developed. I constructed a historical, chronological narrative utilizing primary sources including various documents from BGSU’s archival collection to understand Baldwin’s affiliation with the university. Baldwin’s 1977 visit to BGSU was his first public lecture in the United Sates since his departure to France years prior. Additionally, it was at BGSU that Baldwin first experienced teaching in a college classroom. Thus, given Baldwin’s legacy and the peculiarity that of all post-secondary institutions, he found his way to BGSU, the way in which Baldwin and BGSU overlap deserves analysis. Furthermore, I examined how Baldwin’s visits to BGSU impacted the campus and local community, as well as challenged the erasure of Black people’s perspectives and lived experiences within the post-secondary curriculum. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this selective EBM review is to investigate the question, “does medical clowning impact anxiety in the pediatric patient undergoing medical interventions?” STUDY DESIGN: Review of three randomized control trials (RCT). DATA SOURCES: These articles were published between 2012-2021 in English. The in peer-reviewed journals, searched for using PubMed. OUTCOME(S) MEASURED: The outcomes measured included anxiety level in pediatric patients undergoing medical interventions. RESULTS: In the RCT led by Dionigi et al., medical clowning led to a reduction in pediatric patient anxiety compared with the control group (P \u3c 0.005), indicated by a mean change from baseline of 17. In the RCT by Felluga et al., medical clowning led to a reduction in pediatric patient anxiety compared with the control group (P \u3c 0.05), indicated by a mean change from baseline of 1. Lastly, Mieri et al. demonstrated a reduction pediatric patient anxiety with medical clowning, indicated by a mean change from baseline of 0.04 with statistical significance of P \u3c 0.05 in the treatment group. CONCLUSION: All three studies in this review demonstrated that medical clowning led to significantly reduced anxiety as measured by the Visual Analog-like scales. This suggests medical clowning is an effective and beneficial method for reducing anxiety in the pediatric patient undergoing medical intervention. Further studies should investigate the use of medical clowning with staff, guardians, and in various modalities

Seven years, 103 days, 40 minutes and 17 seconds... On September 17, 2020, Artists Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd displayed a clock in Manhattan Square. This clock, however, displayed exactly how long we have until an irreversible climate disaster occurs, not regular time. Unless greenhouse gases are significantly reduced, the time we have before something like this occurs is limited. It is very easy to see the repercussions of our actions already happening. Many areas of the planet have already seen the 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit average above pre-industrial levels. The consequences of this, are also showing. Storms are increasingly getting worse, droughts are getting longer and heatwaves are getting more extreme. The planet is getting sick and we are feeling the effects, but we can also help heal it. The path to a healthier and more sustainable way of living can be paved by architects of today. Currently, buildings generate, on average, 40% of greenhouse gas emissions annually. The incorporation of new construction techniques, building materials and technologies could significantly help reduce that average. Sustainable design is a necessity in this endeavor and should immediately be incorporated into all types of design whether it be residential, commercial, or industrial. This thesis project will focus mainly on how to incorporate sustainable design into smaller communities. A proposed self-sufficient neighborhood will convey how altering our lifestyles can not only help improve the life of the planet, but also the physical and emotional well-being of humans as well. The community will focus on finding the balance between modern technology and traditional living methods to create a healthy, comfortable and unique environment where individuals and families can thrive

Stirling Convertor Control for a Lunar Concept Rover

NASA Glenn Research Center is developing various circuits for a lunar concept rover powered by both a stirling convertor and lithium ion batteries. To begin, a survey of six analog, non-power factor correcting controllers was done for an Advanced Stirling Convertor (ASC) design one was selected to control the stirling convertor. Next, a constant power circuit and lithium ion battery charger was designed, built and tested based on simulation in PSpice. The constant power circuit enables the stirling convertor to maintain a constant power when additional power is required from the batterie

The Profession – Teacher and the Modern Society

Since the world has become richer and more complex more time is needed for education. It has forced Europe, including Macedonia, to extend the period of compulsory education to eighteen years of age. But life is not a mere application of a program, but it is the ability to know excitement and feelings, as well as the skill to put these into a relationship with others. So, the race for knowledge continues. This is especially true in this 21st century, in times of dynamic change, computerization and the quest for existence - knowledge is imperative set before all teachers of all subjects. Knowledge is always useful, even when it does not guarantee employment or attainment of success. To a human being knowledge is a treasure that lies in a spiritual treasury that is more reliable than those found in large banks. But nowadays teachers not only need to teach and professionally develop, but they should never forget that they need to educate
