    Sub-unit cell layer-by-layer growth of Fe3O4, MgO, and Sr2RuO4 thin films

    The use of oxide materials in oxide electronics requires their controlled epitaxial growth. Recently, it was shown that Reflection High Energy Electron Diffraction (RHEED) allows to monitor the growth of oxide thin films even at high oxygen pressure. Here, we report the sub-unit cell molecular or block layer growth of the oxide materials Sr2RuO4, MgO, and magnetite using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) from stoichiometric targets. Whereas for perovskites such as SrTiO3 or doped LaMnO3 a single RHEED intensity oscillation is found to correspond to the growth of a single unit cell, in materials where the unit cell is composed of several molecular layers or blocks with identical stoichiometry, a sub-unit cell molecular or block layer growth is established resulting in several RHEED intensity oscillations during the growth of a single unit-cell

We show that the logarithmic increase of the entanglement entropy is governed by the same effective central charge which appears in the ground-state properties and which is known exactly.     Explicit Evidence Systems with Common Knowledge

    Justification logics are epistemic logics that explicitly include justifications for the agents' knowledge. We develop a multi-agent justification logic with evidence terms for individual agents as well as for common knowledge. We define a Kripke-style semantics that is similar to Fitting's semantics for the Logic of Proofs LP. We show the soundness, completeness, and finite model property of our multi-agent justification logic with respect to this Kripke-style semantics. We demonstrate that our logic is a conservative extension of Yavorskaya's minimal bimodal explicit evidence logic, which is a two-agent version of LP. We discuss the relationship of our logic to the multi-agent modal logic S4 with common knowledge. Finally, we give a brief analysis of the coordinated attack problem in the newly developed language of our logic

    Seroconversion of Raccoons Following Two Oral Rabies Vaccination Baiting Strategies

    Seroprevalence of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies (rVNA) in raccoons (Procyon lotor) following oral rabies vaccination (ORV) with RABORAL V-RG® in the United States has annually averaged 30% since 1997, a level that is unlikely to successfully interrupt rabies transmission in raccoon populations. A longitudinal ORV zone is maintained in the eastern United States with raccoon variant rabies established east of the zone but absent to the west. However, questions remain regarding the effect of the bait application strategy towards achieving optimal population immunity. We estimated the number of ORV baits/km2 of raccoon home range and calculated rVNA seroprevalence following 2 ORV baiting strategies: cluster baiting (≤10 baits dropped at a time) via helicopter and hand distribution of individual baits at regular intervals along roads and trails in suburban Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, during fall 2013 and 2014. We applied baits at 75 baits/km2 under both strategies. We established 6 1-km2 cells in each treatment area, and fitted ≤2 raccoons with global positioning system collars in each cell. We trapped and sampled ≤25 raccoons in each study cell pre- and post-ORV application for rVNA analysis. Overall raccoon home range and core area estimates were 80.7 ha and 17.5 ha, respectively (n=36). Average bait application for home ranges (n=32 home ranges that received bait) was 80.9 baits/km2 for helicopter baiting and 63.6 baits/km2 for hand baiting sites. Average bait application for core areas was 104.7 baits/km2 for helicopter baiting and 69.2 baits/ km2 for hand baiting sites. All home ranges were baited in both treatment areas, whereas 10/18 and 13/14 core areas were baited in the helicopter and hand distribution sites, respectively. Overall, helicopter cluster ORV delivered more baits/km2 of raccoon home range than hand distribution but was less effective in reaching core areas. Seroprevalence did not change as a function of baiting strategy (helicopter vs. hand baiting). The average overall increase in seroprevalence following ORV application was 8.9%. Evaluation of additional strategies are needed because both methods failed to achieve herd immunity necessary to disrupt rabies transmission in raccoons

    Development of White Etching Bands under Accelerated Rolling Contact Fatigue

    Bearing steel under severe loading condition undergoes substantial subsurface microstructural alterations known as Dark etching regions and white etching bands. White etching bands (WEBs) develop after hundreds of millions of stress cycles in bearing components and have been reported for several decades but the formation mechanism of white bands is not fully elucidated. Current research presents a systematic rolling contact fatigue (RCF) testing in a rotary tribometer under accelerated conditions, where rolling cycles are simulated in a 4-ball test configuration. The post RCF investigations have been carried out to understand the formation mechanism of WEBs in a ball-on-ball point contact load. WEBs have been characterised with the help of nanoindentation and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. The quantitative analysis of WEBs growth with subsurface stress field has revealed that the unique orientations of white bands are governed by the plane of maximum relative normal stress along the contact track. Moreover, the accelerated growth and reversal of WEBs sequence at elevated temperature have revealed that the WEBs formation is dependent on temperature/load combination. The observed growth of lenticular carbides in current research is also compared with dislocation gliding model and the role of carbon diffusion within WEBs is highlighted

    Deconvolving Instrumental and Intrinsic Broadening in Excited State X-ray Spectroscopies

    Intrinsic and experimental mechanisms frequently lead to broadening of spectral features in excited-state spectroscopies. For example, intrinsic broadening occurs in x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements of heavy elements where the core-hole lifetime is very short. On the other hand, nonresonant x-ray Raman scattering (XRS) and other energy loss measurements are more limited by instrumental resolution. Here, we demonstrate that the Richardson-Lucy (RL) iterative algorithm provides a robust method for deconvolving instrumental and intrinsic resolutions from typical XAS and XRS data. For the K-edge XAS of Ag, we find nearly complete removal of ~9.3 eV FWHM broadening from the combined effects of the short core-hole lifetime and instrumental resolution. We are also able to remove nearly all instrumental broadening in an XRS measurement of diamond, with the resulting improved spectrum comparing favorably with prior soft x-ray XAS measurements. We present a practical methodology for implementing the RL algorithm to these problems, emphasizing the importance of testing for stability of the deconvolution process against noise amplification, perturbations in the initial spectra, and uncertainties in the core-hole lifetime.Comment: 35 pages, 13 figure
