    Best practices for urban local food entrepreneurs and building regional Extension networks

    Interest in local foods production in the urban environment has been steadily increasing in North Dakota and the surrounding region. Food entrepreneurs are seeking safe and reliable ways to grow, create, and market their fresh or freshly preserved products. Urban consumers are demanding local foods and food products that are fresh and safe. As an increasing number of producers and vendors enter farmers markets and other local food sales channels, these growing small businesses need technical assistance for safe food handling and marketing in the changing world of pandemics and supply chain issues. Although some basic practices, such as hand washing, have been encouraged for decades, the pandemic has shown that they are in constant need of reinforcement. Regulations for small-scale food entrepreneurs vary widely from state to state and can be confusing for both entrepreneurs and consumers. This lack of clarity is an ongoing issue, so a best practices document was created and disseminated throughout the North Central Region. The North Central Food Safety Extension Network (NCFSEN) has been building a coalition of Extension food safety professionals in our region since 2016. We have implemented several activities together, including monthly meetings, building relationships with industry professionals, developing educational materials, and creating a program evaluation tool for our region. Our network also has been working steadily to help other regions establish their own Extension coalitions to better serve their constituents as developed around a particular topic, such as food safety in our case. To that end, we have assembled best practices for creating regional Extension networks. The following elements was presented at the conference: 1) background of cottage foods in our region, pre- and post-pandemic; 2) best practices for local food entrepreneurs, including the relevance of “best practices” in view of varying state laws and regulations, health and hygiene policy for employees, volunteers, and family members, market day preparations and contingencies, creating, labeling, and sampling value-added food products; 3) evolving practices for pandemic circumstances in urban markets; 4) building regional Extension coalitions to better serve local constituencies; and 5) best practices for implementing your own regional Extension network, including benefits of regional collaboration, organization, communication, and setting goals

    The ACS Fornax Cluster Survey VII. Half-Light Radii of Globular Clusters in Early-Type Galaxies

    We measure the half-light radii of globular clusters (GCs) in 43 galaxies from the ACS Fornax Cluster Survey (ACSFCS). We use these data to extend previous work in which the environmental dependencies of the half-light radii of GCs in early type galaxies in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS) were studied, and a corrected mean half-light radius (corrected for the observed environmental trends) was suggested as a reliable distance indicator. This work both increases the sample size for the study of the environmental dependencies, and adds leverage to the study of the corrected half-light radius as a possible distance indicator (since Fornax lies at a larger distance than the Virgo cluster). We study the environmental dependencies of the size of GCs using both a Principal Component Analysis as well as 2D scaling relations. We largely confirm the environmental dependencies shown in Jordan et al. (2005), but find evidence that there is a residual correlation in the mean half-light radius of GC systems with galaxy magnitude, and subtle differences in the other correlations - so there may not be a universal correction for the half-light radii of lower luminosity galaxy GC systems. The main factor determining the size of a GC in an early type galaxy is the GC color. Red GCs have = 2.8+/-0.3 pc, while blue GCs have = 3.4+/-0.3 pc. We show that for bright early-type galaxies (M_B < -19 mag), the uncorrected mean half-light radius of the GC system is by itself an excellent distance indicator (with error ~11%), having the potential to reach cosmologically interesting distances in the era of high angular resolution adaptive optics on large optical telescopes.Comment: ApJ in press, 19 pages, 16 figures

    Comparing school nurses' roles in supporting children who are bullied.

    This systematic literature review explores the role of school nurses n helping children being bullied in three countries, Norway, Scotland and the United States (US). Comparisons were made of the way school nurses were trained and employed to better understand how this reflects their roles and responsibilities within the context of bullying among school children. Different systems used to support children affected by bullying were explored and examples of good practice shared. The challenges faced by school nurses due to their limited numbers compared to pupils they support was a common phenomenon in all three countries. This in itself challenges school nurses to explore more creative ways of working to ensure that the needs of school children are being met. Recommendations were made on possible cross-cultural research that can explore existing best practice creating a community of learning. This systematic literature review could provide a starting point for futurecollaborations in this field

    NASA seeks on-demand data processing and analysis of Earth science observations to facilitate timely decision-making that can lead to the realization of the practical benefits of satellite instruments, airborne and surface remote sensing systems. However, a significant challenge exists in accessing and integrating data from multiple sensors or platforms to address Earth science problems because of the large data volumes, varying sensor scan characteristics, unique orbital coverage, and the steep "learning curve" associated with each sensor, data type, and associated products. The development of sensor web capabilities to autonomously process these data streams (whether real-time or archived) provides an opportunity to overcome these obstacles and facilitate the integration and synthesis of Earth science data and weather model output

    2022 Community Needs Assessment of Klamath County Residential Services and Housing Needs

    The PSU Regional Research Institute for Human Services (RRI) was asked by Klamath Basin Behavioral Health (KBBH) and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to conduct a community-wide needs assessment focusing on residential services and housing needs for populations that (1) Have behavioral health needs, and (2) Identify with a community experiencing inequities in access to health care resources. The assessment was conducted in collaboration with KBBH and other community partners. Data sources included key informant interviews, written surveys of individuals impacted by mental health challenges and/or housing needs, and focus groups with representatives from underserved communities in Klamath County, Oregon. Funding for this project was provided by a grant from the Oregon Health Authority as part of a larger OHA effort to eliminate behavioral health inequities by 2030
