A reduced-order model of three-dimensional unsteady flow in a cavity based on the resolvent operator
A novel reduced-order model for nonlinear flows is presented. The model
arises from a resolvent decomposition in which the nonlinear advection terms of
the Navier-Stokes equation are considered as the input to a linear system in
Fourier space. Results show that Taylor-G\"ortler-like vortices can be
represented from a low-order resolvent decomposition of a nonlinear lid-driven
cavity flow. The present approach provides an approximation of the fluctuating
velocity given the time-mean and the time history of a single velocity probe
Steady streamwise transpiration control in turbulent pipe flow
A study of the the main features of low- and high amplitude steady streamwise
wall transpiration applied to pipe flow is presented. The effect of the two
transpiration parameters, amplitude and wavenumber, on the flow have been
investigated by means of direct numerical simulation at a moderate turbulent
Reynolds number. The behaviour of the three identified mechanisms that act in
the flow: modification of Reynolds shear stress, steady streaming and
generation of non-zero mean streamwise gradients, have been linked to the
transpiration parameters. The observed trends have permitted the identification
of wall transpiration configurations able to reduce or increase the overall
flow rate in -36.1% and 19.3% respectively. A resolvent analysis has been
carried out to obtain a description of the reorganization of the flow
structures induced by the transpiration
Optimizing the colour and fabric of targets for the control of the tsetse fly Glossina fuscipes fuscipes
Background:
Most cases of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) start with a bite from one of the subspecies of Glossina fuscipes. Tsetse use a range of olfactory and visual stimuli to locate their hosts and this response can be exploited to lure tsetse to insecticide-treated targets thereby reducing transmission. To provide a rational basis for cost-effective designs of target, we undertook studies to identify the optimal target colour.
Methodology/Principal Findings:
On the Chamaunga islands of Lake Victoria , Kenya, studies were made of the numbers of G. fuscipes fuscipes attracted to targets consisting of a panel (25 cm square) of various coloured fabrics flanked by a panel (also 25 cm square) of fine black netting. Both panels were covered with an electrocuting grid to catch tsetse as they contacted the target. The reflectances of the 37 different-coloured cloth panels utilised in the study were measured spectrophotometrically. Catch was positively correlated with percentage reflectance at the blue (460 nm) wavelength and negatively correlated with reflectance at UV (360 nm) and green (520 nm) wavelengths. The best target was subjectively blue, with percentage reflectances of 3%, 29%, and 20% at 360 nm, 460 nm and 520 nm respectively. The worst target was also, subjectively, blue, but with high reflectances at UV (35% reflectance at 360 nm) wavelengths as well as blue (36% reflectance at 460 nm); the best low UV-reflecting blue caught 3× more tsetse than the high UV-reflecting blue.
Conclusions/Significance:
Insecticide-treated targets to control G. f. fuscipes should be blue with low reflectance in both the UV and green bands of the spectrum. Targets that are subjectively blue will perform poorly if they also reflect UV strongly. The selection of fabrics for targets should be guided by spectral analysis of the cloth across both the spectrum visible to humans and the UV region
Practical reasoning in political discourse: The UK government's response to the economic crisis in the 2008 Pre-Budget Report
This article focuses on practical reasoning in political discourse and argues for a better integration of argumentation theory with critical discourse analysis (CDA). Political discourse and its specific genres (for example, deliberation) primarily involve forms of practical reasoning, typically oriented towards finding solutions to problems and deciding on future courses of action. Practical reasoning is a form of inference from cognitive and motivational premises: from what we believe (about the situation or about means—end relations) and what we want or desire (our goals and values), leading to a normative judgement (and often a decision) concerning action. We offer an analysis of the main argument in the UK government’s 2008 Pre-Budget Report (HM Treasury, 2008) and suggest how a critical evaluation of the argument from the perspective of a normative theory of argumentation (particularly the informal logic developed by Douglas Walton) can provide the basis for an evaluation in terms of characteristic CDA concerns. We are advancing this analysis as a contribution to CDA, aimed at increasing the rigour and systematicity of its analyses of political discourse, and as a contribution to the normative concerns of critical social science
Prevalence of childhood disability and the characteristics and circumstances of disabled children in the UK : secondary analysis of the Family Resources Survey
Background: Robust data on the prevalence of childhood disability and the circumstances and characteristics of
disabled children is crucial to understanding the relationship between impairment and social disadvantage. It is also
crucial for public policy development aimed at reducing the prevalence of childhood disability and providing
appropriate and timely service provision. This paper reports prevalence rates for childhood disability in the United
Kingdom (UK) and describes the social and household circumstances of disabled children, comparing these where
appropriate to those of non-disabled children.
Methods: Data were generated from secondary analysis of the Family Resources Survey, a national UK cross-sectional
survey, (2004/5) which had data on 16,012 children aged 0-18 years. Children were defined as disabled if they met the
Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) definition (1995 and 2005). Frequency distributions and cross-tabulations were run
to establish prevalence estimates, and describe the circumstances of disabled children. To establish the association
between individual social and material factors and childhood disability when other factors were controlled for, logistic
regression models were fitted on the dependent variable 'DDA defined disability'.
Results: 7.3% (CI 6.9, 7.7) of UK children were reported by as disabled according to the DDA definition. Patterns of
disability differed between sexes with boys having a higher rate overall and more likely than girls to experience
difficulties with physical coordination; memory, concentration and learning; communication. Disabled children lived in
different personal situations from their non-disabled counterparts, and were more likely to live with low-income,
deprivation, debt and poor housing. This was particularly the case for disabled children from black/minority ethnic/
mixed parentage groups and lone-parent households. Childhood disability was associated with lone parenthood and
parental disability and these associations persisted when social disadvantage was controlled for.
Conclusion: These analyses suggest that UK disabled children experience higher levels of poverty and personal and
social disadvantage than other children. Further research is required to establish accurate prevalence estimates of
childhood disability among different black and minority ethnic groups and to understand the associations between
childhood disability and lone parenthood and the higher rates of sibling and parental disability in households with
disabled children
Victim awareness : re-examining a probation fundamental
‘Ensuring offenders' awareness of the effects of crime on the victims of crime and the public’ is one of five stated aims of the National Probation Service of England and Wales and specifically undertaking victim awareness work is an expectation of the service’s work. The nature and putative value of such work appears to be rarely questioned however. It is argued that ‘victim awareness’ is a confused concept in terms of its rationale, definition, and empirical basis as a criminogenic need. These issues are evaluated and the practice implications discussed. A possible model of victim awareness work is described
Thymus-Associated Parathyroid Hormone Has Two Cellular Origins with Distinct Endocrine and Immunological Functions
In mammals, parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a key regulator of extracellular calcium and inorganic phosphorus homeostasis. Although the parathyroid glands were thought to be the only source of PTH, extra-parathyroid PTH production in the thymus, which shares a common origin with parathyroids during organogenesis, has been proposed to provide an auxiliary source of PTH, resulting in a higher than expected survival rate for aparathyroid Gcm2−/− mutants. However, the developmental ontogeny and cellular identity of these “thymic” PTH–expressing cells is unknown. We found that the lethality of aparathyroid Gcm2−/− mutants was affected by genetic background without relation to serum PTH levels, suggesting a need to reconsider the physiological function of thymic PTH. We identified two sources of extra-parathyroid PTH in wild-type mice. Incomplete separation of the parathyroid and thymus organs during organogenesis resulted in misplaced, isolated parathyroid cells that were often attached to the thymus; this was the major source of thymic PTH in normal mice. Analysis of thymus and parathyroid organogenesis in human embryos showed a broadly similar result, indicating that these results may provide insight into human parathyroid development. In addition, medullary thymic epithelial cells (mTECs) express PTH in a Gcm2-independent manner that requires TEC differentiation and is consistent with expression as a self-antigen for negative selection. Genetic or surgical removal of the thymus indicated that thymus-derived PTH in Gcm2−/− mutants did not provide auxiliary endocrine function. Our data show conclusively that the thymus does not serve as an auxiliary source of either serum PTH or parathyroid function. We further show that the normal process of parathyroid organogenesis in both mice and humans leads to the generation of multiple small parathyroid clusters in addition to the main parathyroid glands, that are the likely source of physiologically relevant “thymic PTH.

The northern hemisphere circumglobal teleconnection in a seasonal forecast model and its relationship to European summer forecast skill
Forecasting seasonal variations in European summer weather represents a considerable challenge. Here, we assess the performance of a seasonal forecasting model at representing a major mode of northern hemisphere summer climate variability, the circumglobal teleconnection (CGT), and the implications of errors in its representation on seasonal forecasts for the European summer (June, July, August). Using seasonal hindcasts initialised at the start of May, we find that the model skill for forecasting the interannual variability of 500 hPa geopotential height is poor, particularly over Europe and several other “centres of action” of the CGT. The model also has a weaker CGT pattern than is observed, particularly in August, when the observed CGT wavetrain is strongest. We investigate several potential causes of this poor skill. First, model variance in geopotential height in west-central Asia (an important region for the maintenance of the CGT) is lower than observed in July and August, associated with a poor representation of the link between this region and Indian monsoon precipitation. Second, analysis of the Rossby wave source shows that the source associated with monsoon heating is both too strong and displaced to the northeast in the model. This is related to errors in monsoon precipitation over the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea, where the model has more precipitation than is observed. Third, the model jet is systematically shifted northwards by several degrees latitude over large parts of the northern hemisphere, which may affect the propagation characteristics of Rossby waves in the model
