    Wearables and location tracking technologies for mental-state sensing in outdoor environments

    Advances in commercial wearable devices are increasingly facilitating the collection and analysis of everyday physiological data. This paper discusses the theoretical and practical aspects of using such ambulatory devices for the detection of episodic changes in physiological signals as a marker for mental state in outdoor environments. A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing commercial wearables in combination with location tracking technologies. The study measured physiological signals for 15 participants, including heart rate, heart-rate variability, and skin conductance. Participants' signals were recorded during an outdoor walk that was tracked using a GPS logger. The walk was designed to pass through various types of environments including green, blue, and urban spaces as well as a more stressful road crossing. The data that was obtained was used to demonstrate how biosensors information can be contextualized and enriched using location information. Significant episodic changes in physiological signals under real-world conditions were detectable in the stressful road crossing, but not in the other types of environments. The article concludes that despite challenges and limitations of current off-the-shelf wearables, the utilization of these devices offers novel opportunities for evaluating episodic changes in physiological signals as a marker for mental state during everyday activities including in outdoor environments

    Touristification, smartization, and social sustainability in European regions

    Touristification and smartization processes are commonly associated with economic growth strategies. Here we emphasize and demonstrate the need to consider the implication of these processes on social sustainability. Initial results imply that: (1) regions not specialized in tourism are associated with a lower share of population in poverty; and (2) regions’ ‘smartness’ level is negatively associated with the share of poverty. However, in regions highly specialized in tourism, smartization demonstrated an opposite association of increased intra-regional poverty. As residents’ quality of life is becoming a key policy consideration, understanding the effect of these socio-economic processes on socially sustainable growth has timely implications for regional planning, including for post-COVID-19 recovery strategies.This research has been funded by the H2020 programme, SMARTDEST project under grant agreement no. 870753

    Developing a Citizen Social Science approach to understand urban stress and promote wellbeing in urban communities

    This paper sets out the future potential and challenges for developing an interdisciplinary, mixed-method Citizen Social Science approach to researching urban emotions. It focuses on urban stress, which is increasingly noted as a global mental health challenge facing both urbanised and rapidly urbanising societies. The paper reviews the existing use of mobile psychophysiological or biosensing within urban environments—as means of ‘capturing’ the urban geographies of emotions. Methodological reflections are included on primary research using biosensing in a study of workplace and commuter stress for university employees in Birmingham (UK) and Salzburg (Austria) for illustrative purposes. In comparing perspectives on the conceptualisation and measurement of urban stress from psychology, neuroscience and urban planning, the difficulties of defining scientific constructs within Citizen Science are discussed to set out the groundwork for fostering interdisciplinary dialogue. The novel methods, geo-located sensor technologies and data-driven approaches to researching urban stress now available to researchers pose a number of ethical, political and conceptual challenges around defining and measuring emotions, stress, human behaviour and urban space. They also raise issues of rigour, participation and social scientific interpretation. Introducing methods informed by more critical Citizen Social Science perspectives can temper overly individualised forms of data collection to establish more effective ways of addressing urban stress and promoting wellbeing in urban communities

    Concordance between GPS-based smartphone app for continuous location tracking and mother's recall of care-seeking for child illness in India

    BACKGROUND: Traditionally, health care-seeking behaviour for child illness is assessed through population-based national demographic and health surveys. GPS-based technologies are increasingly used in human behavioural research including tracking human mobility and spatial behaviour. This paper assesses how well a care-seeking event to a health care facility for child illness, as recalled by the mother in a survey setting using questions sourced from Demographic and Health Surveys, concurs with one that is identified by TrackCare, a GPS-based location-aware smartphone application. METHODS: Mothers residing in the Vadu HDSS area in Pune district, India having at least one young child were randomly assigned to receive a GPS-enabled smartphone with a pre-installed TrackCare app configured to record the device location data at one-minute intervals over a 6-month period. Spatio-temporal parameters were derived from the location data and used to detect a care-seeking event to any of the health care facilities in the area. Mothers were asked to recall a child illness and if, where and when care was sought, using a questionnaire during monthly visits over a 6-month period. Concordance between the mother's recall and the TrackCare app to identify a care-seeking event was estimated according to percent positive agreement. RESULTS: Mean concordance for a care-seeking event between the two methods (mother's recall and TrackCare location data) ranged up to 45%, was significantly higher (P-value <0.001) for care-seeking at a hospital as compared to a clinic and for a health care facility in the private sector compared to that in the public sector. Overall, the proportion of disagreement for a care-seeking event not detected by TrackCare but reported by mother ranged up to 77% and was significantly higher (P-value <0.001) compared to those not reported by mother but detected by TrackCare. CONCLUSIONS: Given the uncertainty and limitations in use of continuous location tracking data in a field setting and the complexity of classifying human activity patterns, additional research is needed before continuous location tracking can serve as a gold standard substitute for other methods to determine health care-seeking behaviour. Future performance may be improved by incorporating other smartphone-based sensors, such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, to obtain more precise location estimates in areas where GPS signal is weakest

    Nano reinforced cement paste composite with functionalized graphene and pristine graphene nanoplatelets

    This study examines and compares the workability, hydration, mechanical, microstructure and transport properties of cement paste composites containing the three forms of graphene-based 2D nanomaterials synthesised from epigenetic graphite deposit, namely, graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and pristine graphene nanoplatelates (G). Graphene materials were used from 0.01% to 0.16% of cement weight. The rGO and G were treated with salt and surfactant, respectively during synthesis, to improve dispersion in water. Characteristics and physical strength vary among GO, rGO and G, which have influenced the properties of nano reinforced graphene-cement composites (GCCs). The 28-day compressive and flexural strength of graphene (GO, rGO and G) cement composite improved by 28% and 81%, 30% and 84%, and 39% and 38%, respectively, compared to the control mix (cement paste without graphene materials). Finally, microscopic analysis, dynamic vapour sorption (DVS), electrical resistivity and water sorptivity results suggested that graphene materials densify and reinforce the composite microstructure
