Multipath/RFI/modulation study for DRSS-RFI problem: Voice coding and intelligibility testing for a satellite-based air traffic control system
Analog and digital voice coding techniques for application to an L-band satellite-basedair traffic control (ATC) system for over ocean deployment are examined. In addition to performance, the techniques are compared on the basis of cost, size, weight, power consumption, availability, reliability, and multiplexing features. Candidate systems are chosen on the bases of minimum required RF bandwidth and received carrier-to-noise density ratios. A detailed survey of automated and nonautomated intelligibility testing methods and devices is presented and comparisons given. Subjective evaluation of speech system by preference tests is considered. Conclusion and recommendations are developed regarding the selection of the voice system. Likewise, conclusions and recommendations are developed for the appropriate use of intelligibility tests, speech quality measurements, and preference tests with the framework of the proposed ATC system
Mobile integrated conditional access system
This paper presents design of a novel security architecture integrating mobile and broadcasting technologies in the Pay-TV system. The security architecture proposed herein is a state-of-the-art solution to tackle well-known problems challenging current Pay-TV systems including but not limited to interoperability amongst service providers, relatively high cost of the service deployment, the security compromise, limited interactivity and bespoken services offered to subscribers. It also proposes the Follow-me service that enables subscribers to access their entitlements via an arbitrary set-top box

Exploring Point of Sale Strategies for Improving Seafood Retailing: The Case of the Australian Oyster Industry
The commodification of many food products, combined with increasing market share of supermarkets, has increased the importance of point of sale (POS) strategies in speciality food retailers such as fishmongers. The purpose of this study is to develop strategies to improve the retailing of seafood in fishmongers, specifically oysters, a species which is currently underutilised; as although they are eaten by many consumers, purchase frequency is low. A literature review identifies the key drivers and barriers to oyster consumption and the information consumers want at the POS. Based on these findings, a retailing strategy for oysters is developed and tested in two consumer focus groups. Based on focus group results, revisions are recommended to the retail strategy, importantly including a change in collateral from a production focus to a consumption focus. This study makes a clear contribution to theory and practice by bringing together the existing literature on drivers and barriers and consumer information requirements about oysters to develop and test practical retail strategy concepts
Optimizing broad ion beam polishing of zircaloy-4 for electron backscatter diffraction analysis
Microstructural analysis with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) involves sectioning and polishing to create a flat and preparation-artifact free surface. The quality of EBSD analysis is often dependant on this step, and this motivates us to explore how broad ion beam (BIB) milling can be optimised for the preparation of zircaloy-4 with different grain sizes. We systematically explore the role of ion beam angle, ion beam voltage, polishing duration and polishing temperature and how this changes the surface roughness and indexing quality. Our results provide a method to routinely prepare high-quality Zircaloy-4 surfaces, and methods to optimise BIB polishing of other materials for high-quality EBSD studies

An equine tendon model for studying intra-tendinous shear in tendons that have more than one muscle contribution
Human Achilles tendon is composed of three smaller sub-tendons and exhibits non-uniform internal displacements, which decline with age and after injury, suggesting a potential role in the development of tendinopathies. Studying internal sliding behaviour is therefore important but difficult in human Achilles tendon. Here we propose the equine deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) and its accessory ligament (AL) as a model to understand the sliding mechanism. The AL-DDFT has a comparable sub-bundle structure, is subjected to high and frequent asymmetric loads and is a natural site of injury similar to human Achilles tendons. Equine AL-DDFT were collected and underwent whole tendon level (n=7) and fascicle level (n=7) quasi-static mechanical testing. Whole tendon level testing was performed by sequentially loading through the proximal AL and subsequently through the proximal DDFT and recording regional strain in the free structures and joined DDFT and AL. Fascicle level testing was performed with focus on the inter-sub-bundle matrix between the two structures at the junction. Our results demonstrate a significant difference in the regional strain between the joined DDFT and AL and a greater transmission of force from the AL to the DDFT than vice versa. These results can be partially explained by the mechanical properties and geometry of the two structures and by differences in the properties of the interfascicular matrices. In conclusion, this tendon model successfully demonstrates that high displacement discrepancy occurs between the two structures and can be used as an easy-access model for study intra-tendinous shear mechanics at the sub-tendon level. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: : Our study provides a naturally occurring and easily accessible equine model to study the complex behaviour of sub-tendons within the human Achilles tendon, which is likely to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of tendon disease. Our results demonstrate that the difference in material stiffness between the equine AL and DDFT stems largely from differences in the inter-fascicular matrix and furthermore that differences in strain are maintained in distal parts of the tightly joined structure. Furthermore, our results suggest that distribution of load between sub-structures is highly dependent on the morphological relationship between them; a finding that has important implications for understanding Achilles tendon mechanical behaviour, injury mechanisms and rehabilitation
Radio pulses from cosmic ray air showers - Boosted Coulomb and Cherenkov fields
High-energy cosmic rays passing through the Earth's atmosphere produce
extensive showers whose charges emit radio frequency pulses. Despite the low
density of the Earth's atmosphere, this emission should be affected by the air
refractive index because the bulk of the shower particles move roughly at the
speed of radio waves, so that the retarded altitude of emission, the
relativistic boost and the emission pattern are modified. We consider in this
paper the contribution of the boosted Coulomb and the Cherenkov fields and
calculate analytically the spectrum using a very simplified model in order to
highlight the main properties. We find that typically the lower half of the
shower charge energy distribution produces a boosted Coulomb field, of
amplitude comparable to the levels measured and to those calculated previously
for synchrotron emission. Higher energy particles produce instead a
Cherenkov-like field, whose amplitude may be smaller because both the negative
charge excess and the separation between charges of opposite signs are small at
