Gnovis: Flowing Through the Galaxy of Knowledge

    Get PDF
Gnovis is a novel application for all scholars and teachers in the humanities that will, in the long run, permit the re-conceptualization of data that have until recently been presented in rigid, non-individualized formats. Gnovis is a first attempt at producing an engine that can display corpora of knowledge in multi-dimensional environments, allowing for the visualization of extensive amounts of material organized semantically in nested clusters. We plan to implement a prototype visual interface for a compact but detailed set of knowledge in the humanities. Our goal is to explore different visualization styles and interfaces. We are interested in creating a more fluid style of interface than the current web-page paradigm where a click can take you to a new page, more smoothly navigable even than the Google maps style which allows the user to drag information from out of the current view

The role of simulation in neonatal and pediatric training and research

    Get PDF
From a pediatric perspective, the two main types of simulation-based research are: studies that assess the efficacy of simulation as a training methodology and studies where simulation is used as an investigative methodology. Aim of the study. Overall, the aim of the research activity is to inquire the use of simulation as investigative methodology in pediatric and neonatal settings. Study design: Previously, we investigated the current use of simulation in pediatric fellowships in Italy in order to understand the state of the art and the expectations of pediatric residents with regard to simulationbased training and research. Furthermore, we developed suitable simulated scenarios for pediatric training and research. As second step, we evaluated technical (TS) and non-technical (NTS) skills in a sample of Italian pediatric residents using a neonatal resuscitation scenario; Finally, we aimed to evaluate the accuracy of NeoTapAS in reliably determining HR from auscultation in a high-fidelity simulated newborn resuscitation scenario. Results and future perspectives: Firstly, we highlighted that an extremely high percentage of pediatric italian residents spent less than 5 hours/year in simulation-based education. Secondly, the mean compliance to last ILCOR recommendations about neonatal resuscitation was 59 % and a very low compliance (< 30%) was observed for a number of important technical items. Finally, NeoTapAS showed a good accuracy in estimating HR and it could be an important resource for neonatologists in delivery room resuscitation As future perspective, we designed a new simulation-based multi-center research (\u201cSimarrest \u201d) in collaboration with University of Padua in order to identify gaps about in-hospital pediatric cardiac arrest management in a standardized setting

The aim of this study was to investigate the mite fauna present in 33 living room and 22 bedroom curtain dust samples from 41 different homes in the southern Brazilian city of Campinas, SP. A total of 148 mite bodies were found. Of these, 83 were found in living-room curtain samples (56.1% of total) and 65 were in bedroom curtain dust samples (43.9%). The most frequently observed mite suborders were: Acaridida (n = 79; 53.4%), Actinedida (n=53; 35.8%), Oribatida (n=14; 9.5%), and Gamasida (n=2; 1.3%). The most frequent families were Pyroglyphidae (n=61; 41.2%), Eriophyidae (n=25; 16.9%), Tarsonemidae (n=15; 10.1%), and Glycyphagidae (n=13; 8.8%). No statistical difference was observed between the number of mites found in the samples from living room and bedroom curtains.651252

THERMAL STRESS IN THE ADEQUACY OF THE CHEMICAL SCARIFICATION PERIOD IN BRACHIARIA SEEDS

    Get PDF
Forage seeds often have a low germination percentage due to their seeds' dormancy, such as seeds of the genus Urochloa. Chemical scarification is chosen to overcome the dormancy, yet the seed's vigor level is not taken into account. On this wise, the method can harm the seed's quality. In this context, the study aimed to investigate the appropriate scarification period in brachiaria seeds and how the lot's thermal stress can affect this result. The experimental design was completely randomized, arranged in a 3x4 factorial scheme, designated by thermal stress (0, 24, and 48 hours) and periods of chemical scarification with concentrated sulfuric acid (0, 5, 10, and 15 minutes), with four repetitions. After scarification of the treatments, the seeds were evaluated for germination and vigor criteria. Scarification for 5 minutes is enough to express the quality of Urochloa brizantha cv. MG-5. This technique is not recommended after the seeds are severely stressed by temperature and humidity

An overview of the synaptic vesicle lipid composition

Chemical neurotransmission is the major mechanism of neuronal communication. Neurotransmitters are released from secretory organelles, the synaptic vesicles (SVs) via exocytosis into the synaptic cleft. Fusion of SVs with the presynaptic plasma membrane is balanced by endocytosis, thus maintaining the presynaptic membrane at steady-state levels. The protein machineries responsible for exo- and endocytosis have been extensively investigated. In contrast, less is known about the role of lipids in synaptic transmission and how the lipid composition of SVs is affected by dynamic exo-endocytotic cycling. Here we summarize the current knowledge about the composition, organization, and function of SV membrane lipids. We also cover lipid biogenesis and maintenance during the synaptic vesicle cycle

Effect Of The Ambient Temperature On The Performance Of Small Size SCO2 Based Pulverized Coal Power Plants

The present work focuses on the analysis of a novel coal fired sCO2 power plant concept developed in the frame of sCO2-Flex H2020 EU funded project. Fossil fuel fired power plants are expected to improve their flexibility in the future energy scenario characterized by a large share of non-predictable and nondispatchable renewable energy sources. This upcoming context requires a new generation of coal fired power plants with a smaller size, a high flexibility and minor requirements for the installation site like no need of water consumption. Carbon dioxide in supercritical cycles is recognized to be a possible solution for this technology shift and could replace in the future common steam Rankine cycles. This paper focuses on the impact of ambient temperature variation on a small size coal fired sCO2 power plants equipped with a dry cooling heat rejection unit, with the aim of understanding the effect on plant operability and system performance. A dedicate tool is implemented for offdesign behavior assessment and different control strategies are investigated. Results show that without a proper design of the heat rejection unit a small increase of ambient temperature may drastically limit the maximum attainable power output of the plant. This penalizing effect is more pronounced in hot locations, but this issue can be limited by adopting a sufficient over-sizing of the cycle heat rejection unit (HRU) or wet-and-dry solutions

AbstractSolar tower based plants are seen as a promising technology to reduce the cost of electricity from solar radiation. This paper assesses the design and overall yearly performances of two different solar tower concepts featuring two commercial plants running in Spain. The first plant investigated is based on Direct Steam Generation and a cavity receiver (PS-10 type). The second plant considers an external cylindrical receiver with molten salts as heat transfer fluid and storage system (Gemasolar type). About the optical assessment performed with DELSOL3, a calibration of heliostat aim points was performed to match available flux maps on the receiver. Moving to results, the PS-10 type has higher optical performances both nominal design and yearly average. This is due both to the field size and orientation which guarantee a higher efficiency and to the receiver concept itself. About power production, the molten salts allow higher temperature and consequently conversion efficiency than PS-10. The solar-to-electricity efficiency is equal to 18.7% vs. 16.4% of DSG cavity plant. The obtained results are strictly related to the set of assumptions made on each plant component: when available real plant data where used. The two solar tower plants results were also compared to corresponding commercial linear focus plants featuring the same power block concept. Gemasolar type shows a higher solar-to-electricity efficiency compared to a parabolic trough plant with storage (18.7% vs. 15.4%) because of the higher maximum temperatures and, consequently, power block efficiency. PS-10 is better than a linear Fresnel DSG (16.4% vs. 10.4%) because of the higher optical performances
