On the fauna of hemipteran bugs (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha et Heteroptera) and big-headed flies (Diptera: Pipunculidae) of the Kaiserstuhl, southwestern Germany. – Field records of 157 Auchenorrhyncha species gathered on field excursionsto five sites in the Kaiserstuhl Hill during the 9th Auchenorrhyncha Meeting, June 14th - 15th 2002, are presented. Particularly noteworthy was the first German record of the leafhopper Arocephalus sagittarius Rib., which was so far only known from southwestern Europe, and the very rare Edwardsiana smreczynskii Dwor., which is known only from less than 10 localities in Poland, Slowakia, Germany, Switzerland and France. Two further species, which are known in Germany only from this locality, notably Cixidia pilatoi D'Urso & Gugl. and Phlepsius intricatus (H.-S.), were no more found

    The LHC Injection Tests

A series of LHC injection tests was performed in August and September 2008. The first saw beam injected into sector 23; the second into sectors 78 and 23; the third into sectors 78-67 and sectors 23-34-45. The fourth, into sectors 23-34-45, was performed the evening before the extended injection test on the 10th September which saw both beams brought around the full circumference of the LHC. The tests enabled the testing and debugging of a number of critical control and hardware systems; testing and validation of instrumentation with beam for the first time; deployment, and validation of a number of measurement procedures. Beam based measurements revealed a number of machine configuration issues that were rapidly resolved. The tests were undoubtedly an essential precursor to the successful start of LHC beam commissioning. This paper provides an outline of preparation for the tests, the machine configuration and summarizes the measurements made and individual system performance

Ausbreitung des Buchsbaumzünslers "Diaphania perspectalis" (Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) in der Region Basel - eine für die Schweiz neue Schädlingsart

    No full text
The spread of D. perspectalis has been examined in the region of Basel over a period of six months. First results suggest the occurrence of three generations per year. Due to its rapid spread, D. perspectalis might colonize all suitable habitats in Switzerland within a few years

Nitrogen dynamics in cropping systems under Mediterranean climate: a systemic analysis

International audienceWorldwide, Mediterranean cropping systems face the complex challenge of producing enough high-quality food while preserving the quantity and quality of scarce water for people and agriculture in the context of climate change. While good management of nitrogen (N) is paramount to achieving this objective, the efficient strategies developed for temperate systems are often not adapted to the specificities of Mediterranean systems. In this work we combined original data with a thorough literature review to highlight the most relevant drivers of N dynamics in these semiarid systems. To do so, we provide an analysis at nested scales combining a bottom–up approach from the field scale with a top–down approach considering the agro-food system where cropping systems are inserted. We analyze the structural changes in the agro-food systems affecting total N entering the territory; the contrasting response of yields to N availability under rainfed and irrigated conditions in a precipitation gradient; the interaction between N management and climate change adaptation; the main drivers affecting the release of Nr compounds (NO3-, NH3, NO, N2O) as compared with temperate systems; and finally, the behavior of N once exported to highly regulated river networks. We conclude that a sustainable N management in Mediterranean cropping systems requires the specific adaptation of practices to the particular local agroenvironmental characteristics with special emphasis on water availability for rainfed and irrigated systems. This approach should also include a systemic analysis of N inputs into the territory that are driven by the configuration of the agro-food system
