    An extensive calcified left ventricular aneurysm: Case report

    A calcified left ventricular aneurysm (CLVA) is a rare, serious complication of acute myocardial infarction. It can lead to angina pectoris, thromboembolism of ventricular origin, ventricular arrhythmia, ventricular pseudoaneurysm or rupture, progressively enlarging aneurysms, congestive heart failure, and death. Treatment is surgical for symptomatic or asymptomatic LVAs larger than 5 cm, particularly when there is comorbid coronay artery disease. Its standard treatment is a ventriculoplasty and aneurysmectomy using the Dor technique. The aim of surgical treatment of an LVA is to reduce oxygen consumption in the LV by reducing end-diastolic volume (EDV), creating the ideal ventricle geometry, and preventing thrombus formation.     Determination of Transesterification Reaction Parameters Giving the Lowest Viscosity Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel

    AbstractThis study aims determination of transesterification reaction parameters to produce the lowest kinematic viscosity waste cooking oil biodiesel by using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as catalyst and ethanol (C2H5OH) as alcohol. For this purpose, the individual effects of main reaction parameters such as catalyst concentration (0.50-1.75%), reaction temperature (60-90°C), reaction time (60-150min.) and alcohol/oil molar ratio (6:1-15:1) on the kinematic viscosities of produced biodiesels were investigated, respectively. According to results, reaction parameters giving the lowest kinematic viscosity of 4.387 cSt were determined as 1.25% catalyst concentration, 70°C reaction temperature, 120minutes reaction time and 12:1 alcohol/oil molar ratio

    Intracardiac tumors: Results from a single heart center

    Background: This study aims to present the results of surgical treatment of intracardiac tumors in our cardiac surgery center. Methods: Data of 21 patients with intracardiac tumors (15 males, 6 females; median age 60.9 years; range 35 to 87 years) who underwent surgery between April 2006 and May 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were diagnosed preoperatively by transthoracic echocardiography and computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Results: The mean follow-up was 27.85 months. Of 21 patients, 12 had benign tumors and nine had malignant tumors. Of the benign tumors, nine were myxomas, one was an intramuscular lipoma, one was an interatrial septal lipoma, and one was a papillary fibroelastoma. Of the malignant tumors, eight were metastatic tumors and one was a primary tumor. Median sternotomy was performed in all patients to access the heart. Thrombi due to a cardiac mass were detected intraoperatively in some patients. Conclusion: Our study results suggest a high-degree of diagnostic confusion between intracardiac thrombi and tumors. Therefore, metastatic cardiac tumors should be considered in patients with pleural or pericardial effusion of no other identified cause

    Mosque-based emotional support among young Muslim Americans

    Despite a growing literature on social support networks in religious settings (i.e., church-based social support), little is known about mosque-based support among Muslims. This study investigates the demographic and religious behavior correlates of mosque-based social support among a multi-racial and ethnic sample of 231 young Muslims from southeast Michigan. Several dimensions of mosque-based support are examined including receiving emotional support, giving emotional support, anticipated emotional support and negative interactions with members of one’s mosque. Results indicated that women both received and antic- ipated receiving greater support than did men. Higher educational attainment was associated with receiving and giving less support compared to those with the lowest level of educational attainment. Moreover, highly educated members reported fewer negative interactions than less educated members. Mosque attendance and level of congregational involvement positively predicted receiving, giving, and anticipated emotional support from congregants, but was unrelated to negative interactions.     POU6F2 mutation in humans with pubertal failure alters GnRH transcript expression

    Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is characterized by the absence of pubertal development and subsequent impaired fertility often due to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) deficits. Exome sequencing of two independent cohorts of IHH patients identified 12 rare missense variants in POU6F2 in 15 patients. POU6F2 encodes two distinct isoforms. In the adult mouse, expression of both isoform1 and isoform2 was detected in the brain, pituitary, and gonads. However, only isoform1 was detected in mouse primary GnRH cells and three immortalized GnRH cell lines, two mouse and one human. To date, the function of isoform2 has been verified as a transcription factor, while the function of isoform1 has been unknown. In the present report, bioinformatics and cell assays on a human-derived GnRH cell line reveal a novel function for isoform1, demonstrating it can act as a transcriptional regulator, decreasing GNRH1 expression. In addition, the impact of the two most prevalent POU6F2 variants, identified in five IHH patients, that were located at/or close to the DNA-binding domain was examined. Notably, one of these mutations prevented the repression of GnRH transcripts by isoform1. Normally, GnRH transcription increases as GnRH cells mature as they near migrate into the brain. Augmentation earlier during development can disrupt normal GnRH cell migration, consistent with some POU6F2 variants contributing to the IHH pathogenesis
