    Mazetec: A Scenario-Based Learning Platform

    Get PDF
This work presents Mazetec, a scenario-based learning platform for delivering non-linear scenarios format asynchronously. It enables subject matter experts to create interactive, state-dependent case studies or courses with branching logic for online learning and knowledge testing. Mazetec is a complex web application designed to deliver decision-based or case-based educational scenarios and simulations in a time-limited, non-linear format. There are many e-learning systems in the open source and commercial markets, but while these systems may have similar functions, we have found none that are both domain independent and able to deliver state-dependent content asynchronous and non-linearly. Mazetec can serve as a standalone training system or serve as a supplementary activity provider to an existing course in an organization\u27s existing learning management system (LMS)

The Development And Formative Evaluation Of Instructional Materials And Procedures Designed To Teach The Concept Of Christian Witness

Problem The members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church must witness if they are to fulfill the Gospel commission and spread the three angels\u27 messages. Two factors which may be hindering the development of an active lay witness are: (1) a lack of understanding about what witness really is and, (2) an inadequate understanding of how to witness. Methods The methods used were divided into three activities. The first was the review of theological and instructional literature toward the end of the development of instructional materials. The second activity was the use of these materials during which formative evaluation took place. The evaluation included in-process evaluation as well as the use of a class evaluation questionnaire and an interview procedure. The third activity involved an analysis of the information gathered for the improving instructional procedures and personal skill in teaching. Results The majority of the students reported the class as having been successful in meeting its objectives and aiding them in witness. Categories of statements that were most helpful in formulating ways to improve the instruction were: (1) those who suggested the need for more specific examples of witness experience, (2) those who appreciated the outlining of the essential facts of the Gospel for presentation to another, (3) those who found a closer relationship with Christ in the class. Conclusions The results of the formative evaluation suggest the direction to move in the future are: (1) the development of more specific examples of witness, (2) the development of teacher aids to guide teachers in instructing the students on the development of their own outline of the Gospel, and (3) the awareness of the teacher of the potential of the teaching of witness as a tool for leading students to Christ. From the author\u27s personal experience it is suggested that instruction would be strengthened with more action-oriented instructional procedures to give the students opportunity for appropriate practice. It is also important that Academy Bible teachers need training in contemporary instructional theory

Privacy Attitudes among Early Adopters of Emerging Health Technologies.

IntroductionAdvances in health technology such as genome sequencing and wearable sensors now allow for the collection of highly granular personal health data from individuals. It is unclear how people think about privacy in the context of these emerging health technologies. An open question is whether early adopters of these advances conceptualize privacy in different ways than non-early adopters.PurposeThis study sought to understand privacy attitudes of early adopters of emerging health technologies.MethodsTranscripts from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with early adopters of genome sequencing and health devices and apps were analyzed with a focus on participant attitudes and perceptions of privacy. Themes were extracted using inductive content analysis.ResultsAlthough interviewees were willing to share personal data to support scientific advancements, they still expressed concerns, as well as uncertainty about who has access to their data, and for what purpose. In short, they were not dismissive of privacy risks. Key privacy-related findings are organized into four themes as follows: first, personal data privacy; second, control over personal information; third, concerns about discrimination; and fourth, contributing personal data to science.ConclusionEarly adopters of emerging health technologies appear to have more complex and nuanced conceptions of privacy than might be expected based on their adoption of personal health technologies and participation in open science. Early adopters also voiced uncertainty about the privacy implications of their decisions to use new technologies and share their data for research. Though not representative of the general public, studies of early adopters can provide important insights into evolving attitudes toward privacy in the context of emerging health technologies and personal health data research

    Always the Icarus

Always the Icarus is an experimental play in two acts depicting the road-trip journey of meth-fueled, anti-heroine, Cartla, and her best friend, J.A. –a Juggalo with a heart of gold. Cartla desperately needs to leave the Midwestern nothingness of Interior, South Dakota after having a premonition about the fate of America’s favorite T.V. food guy, Guy Fieri. The lines between memory and vivid hallucination become desperately scrambled for the young, twisted duo as they venture from stop to stop along the lucid route to Anaheim, California. With each passing stop, Cartla is confronted by her inescapable geo-historical and geo-familial coordinates as well as a whole slew of characters who refuse to accept the idea that the coveted “American dream” may be grossly out of reach for the forgotten “trash” of the nation. But who will be the saviors of the broken and the ambassadors of the underdogs? Do the maneuvers of the father undoubtedly scar the psyche of the oblivious, devoted child? Do mythologies leave room for less-tragic margins of error?Through a theatrical narrative form stressing cyclical language and interactions, audiences are urged to question whether the mythic Icarus will always fall from the soaring, sky-heights of heaven into the cold waters below
