    Method to obtain absolute impurity density profiles combining charge exchange and beam emission spectroscopy without absolute intensity calibration

    Investigation of impurity transport properties in tokamak plasmas is essential and a diagnostic that can provide information on the impurity content is required. Combining charge exchange recombination spectroscopy (CXRS) and beam emission spectroscopy (BES), absolute radial profiles of impurity densities can be obtained from the CXRS and BES intensities, electron density and CXRS and BES emission rates, without requiring any absolute calibration of the spectra. The technique is demonstrated here with absolute impurity density radial profiles obtained in TEXTOR plasmas, using a high efficiency charge exchange spectrometer with high etendue, that measures the CXRS and BES spectra along the same lines-of-sight, offering an additional advantage for the determination of absolute impurity densities

    Electroretinographic assessment of rod- and cone-mediated bipolar cell pathways using flicker stimuli in mice

    Mouse full-field electroretinograms (ERGs) are dominated by responses of photoreceptors and depolarizing (ON-) bipolar cells, but not much of hyperpolarizing (OFF-) bipolar cells under conventional recording conditions. Here we investigate a novel ERG protocol in mice for functional assessment of the major ON-and OFF- bipolar cell pathways using flicker stimuli for a high luminance with varying frequency up to 30 Hz. Wild- type (WT) and functionally specific transgenic mice (Cnga3(-/-),no cone photoreceptor function;rho(-/-),no rod photoreceptor function;mGluR6(-/-),no ON-bipolar cell function) were examined. The Cnga3(-/-) flicker ERG was similar to the WT flicker ERG at very low stimulus frequencies, whereas ERGs were comparable between WT and rho(-/-) mice at 5 Hz and above. Between 5 and 15 Hz, ERGs in mGluR6(-/-) mice differed in configuration and amplitude from those in WT and rho(-/-) mice;in contrast, response amplitudes above 15 Hz were comparable among WT, rho(-/-) and mGluR6(-/-) mice. In summary, we found three frequency ranges with these conditions that are dominated by activity in the rod pathways (below 5 Hz),cone ON-pathway (between 5 and 15 Hz),and cone OFF-pathway (above 15 Hz) that enables a quick overview of the functionality of the major bipolar cell pathways

    Implications of uncertainties on European DEMO design

    During the pre-conceptual design phase of fusion devices such as the European demonstration fusion power plant (DEMO), systems codes provide a fast evaluation of optimal design points and highlight high impact areas. However, determining or evaluating a design point at such an early stage comes with uncertainties in many of the design parameters. These uncertainties are both associated with the physics as well as the engineering basis of the European DEMO design. The work applies an uncertainty quantification analysis to the 2017 pulsed European DEMO design using the PROCESS systems code. It assumes that DEMO will be built as suggested by the baseline and explores what implications the currently known physics and engineering uncertainties have on the expected performance parameters (net electric output and pulse length), while optimising the fusion gain Q. A more detailed single parameter analysis clearly identifies high impact parameters. This confirms previous investigations as well as revealing new areas that warrant deeper investigation in particular in the technology area

    Contact Patterns Among Bighorn Sheep In and Around Glacier National Park

    Identifying patterns of direct contacts among individual animals is important to understanding infectious disease transmission. Social behavior can be influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic variables and can be explored at 3 levels: social network structure, dyad structure, and contact structure. We investigated drivers of contact structure using GPS locations of 87 male and female bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) in and around Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. Focusing on contacts between sheep moving separately, we examined relationships between contact locations and movement variables, land cover, distances to various resources, and variables known to influence survival using a resource selection function. Used and available points were defined as simultaneous locations within 25 m (the contact-used) and 13 km (largest step length- available) of another collared bighorn sheep, thus results of this analysis describe the strengths of these variables relative to habitat use. Data were analyzed separately according to dyad type (male-male, female-female, malefemale). Most contacts occurred in March for male-male and female-female dyads and in November, December, and January for male-female dyads. For male-male dyads, contacts occurred more than expected given habitat use in conifer land cover and locations farther from perennial water sources, high NDVI, little canopy cover, and low and high solar radiation index. For female-female dyads, contacts occurred less than expected given habitat use in grass and barren land cover and locations with intermediate terrain ruggedness, high NDVI, and low and high snow water equivalent. For male-female dyads, contacts occurred most during the night, least during the day, and at locations with intermediate elevation and farther from escape terrain. Together, these results suggest that more specific conditions apply to contact locations than general locations and that we can predict locations where contacts are most likely to occur, which may be useful for disease management

    Strain effects on effective masses for MoS2 monolayers

    We have studied the effects of both intrinsic and external factors, such as strain, substrate and electric field, over a MoS2 monolayer, via DFT simulations. From these simulations we computed the system's bandstructure and evaluate the bandgap values, extracting the effective masses as well. Our calculations show a transition between direct and indirect gaps when strain is applied, and also that the bandstructure is barely affected by the presence of a substrate or an external electric field with values up to 1 V/Å
