    This paper evaluates the effects of test fixture isolation when using nested mode-stir chambers for conducting electromagnetic shielding measurements. The nested chamber technique is used by both government and industry to evaluate the electromagnetic attenuating properties of materials as varied as infrared sensor windows to the composites used in the hulls of new ships, EM-protection of human as well as devices. Numerical simulation by means of CST and FEKO software of different nested chambers arrangements were done. Some preliminary test measurements of designed and manufactured the small reverberation chamber were done and compare with the numerical simulation results

    Absence of the suprarenal segment of the inferior vena cava with a coexisting absence of the right brachiocephalic vein in a 22-year-old Caucasian male with arterial hypertension

    Congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava (IVC) are rarely observed malformations of the venous system, occurring in 0.3% of otherwise healthy individuals, and in 0.6% to 2% of patients with coexisting cardiovascular defects. They are usually asymptomatic and recognised incidentally during imaging, operations or dissection studies. In this paper we report an extremely rare case of a 22-year-old Caucasian male, admitted for the purpose of excluding secondary causes of hypertension. During imaging of the abdomen and the thorax we found a complete lack of the suprarenal segment of the IVC, with a coexisting absence of the right brachiocephalic vein. We discuss the problem of congenital defects of the IVC and we review the relevant literature

    Ribs of Pinna nobilis shell induce unexpected microstructural changes that provide unique mechanical properties

    The reinforcement function of shell ribs depends not only on their vaulted morphology but also on their microstructure. They are part of the outer layer which, in the case of the Pinna nobilis bivalve, is built from almost monocrystalline calcitic prisms, always oriented perpendicular to the growth surfaces. Originally, prisms and their c-axes follow the radii of rib curvature, becoming oblique to the shell thickness direction. Later, prisms bend to reach the nacre layer perpendicularly, but their c-axes retain the initial orientation. Calcite grains form nonrandom boundaries. Most often, three twin disorientations arise, with two of them observed for the first time. Nano-indentation and impact tests demonstrate that the oblique orientation of c-axes significantly improves the hardness and fracture toughness of prisms. Moreover, compression tests reveal that the rib area achieves a unique strength of 700 MPa.     Tiling array data analysis: a multiscale approach using wavelets

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tiling array data is hard to interpret due to noise. The wavelet transformation is a widely used technique in signal processing for elucidating the true signal from noisy data. Consequently, we attempted to denoise representative tiling array datasets for ChIP-chip experiments using wavelets. In doing this, we used specific wavelet basis functions, <it>Coiflets</it>, since their triangular shape closely resembles the expected profiles of true ChIP-chip peaks.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>In our wavelet-transformed data, we observed that noise tends to be confined to small scales while the useful signal-of-interest spans multiple large scales. We were also able to show that wavelet coefficients due to non-specific cross-hybridization follow a log-normal distribution, and we used this fact in developing a thresholding procedure. In particular, wavelets allow one to set an unambiguous, absolute threshold, which has been hard to define in ChIP-chip experiments. One can set this threshold by requiring a similar confidence level at different length-scales of the transformed signal. We applied our algorithm to a number of representative ChIP-chip data sets, including those of Pol II and histone modifications, which have a diverse distribution of length-scales of biochemical activity, including some broad peaks.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Finally, we benchmarked our method in comparison to other approaches for scoring ChIP-chip data using spike-ins on the ENCODE Nimblegen tiling array. This comparison demonstrated excellent performance, with wavelets getting the best overall score.</p

    Combined T2 and diffusion-weighted MR Imaging with template prostate biopsies in men suspected with prostate cancer but negative transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsies

    PURPOSE: Transperineal template prostate (TPB) biopsy has been shown to improve prostate cancer detection in men with rising PSA and previous negative TRUS biopsies. Diagnostic performance of this approach especially MR imaging and using reliable reference standard remains scantly reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 200 patients, who were previously TRUS biopsy negative, were recruited in this study. All the participants had at least 28-core TPB under general anesthetic within 8 weeks of previous negative TRUS biopsies. In 15 men undergoing laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, prostate specimens were sectioned using custom-made molds and analyzed by experienced pathologist as a feasibility study. RESULTS: In total, 120 of 200 patients (60 %) had positive TPB biopsy results. All of these men had at least one negative biopsy from transrectal route. T2 diffusion-weighted MR imaging showed no lesion in almost one-third of these men (61/200; 30.5 %). Out of these, 33 (33/61; 54 %) showed malignancy on TPB including high-grade tumors (>Gleason 7). Out of 15 patients underwent surgery with a total of 52 lesions (mean 3.5) on radical prostatectomy histology analyses, TPB detected 36 (70 %) lesions only. Some of these lesions were Gleason 7 and more mostly located in the posterior basal area of prostate. CONCLUSIONS: Transperineal template biopsy technique is associated with significantly high prostate cancer detection rate in men with previous negative TRUS biopsies, however compared to radical prostatectomy histology map, a significant number of lesions can still be missed in the posterior and basal area of prostate

    Sole-Search: an integrated analysis program for peak detection and functional annotation using ChIP-seq data

    Next-generation sequencing is revolutionizing the identification of transcription factor binding sites throughout the human genome. However, the bioinformatics analysis of large datasets collected using chromatin immunoprecipitation and high-throughput sequencing is often a roadblock that impedes researchers in their attempts to gain biological insights from their experiments. We have developed integrated peak-calling and analysis software (Sole-Search) which is available through a user-friendly interface and (i) converts raw data into a format for visualization on a genome browser, (ii) outputs ranked peak locations using a statistically based method that overcomes the significant problem of false positives, (iii) identifies the gene nearest to each peak, (iv) classifies the location of each peak relative to gene structure, (v) provides information such as the number of binding sites per chromosome and per gene and (vi) allows the user to determine overlap between two different experiments. In addition, the program performs an analysis of amplified and deleted regions of the input genome. This software is web-based and automated, allowing easy and immediate access to all investigators. We demonstrate the utility of our software by collecting, analyzing and comparing ChIP-seq data for six different human transcription factors/cell line combinations
