Annurca apple (M. pumila Miller cv Annurca) extracts act against stress and ageing in S. cerevisiae yeast cells

    Get PDF
During the past years, a number of studies have demonstrated the positive effect of apple on ageing and different diseases such as cancer, degenerative and cardiovascular diseases. The unicellular yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae represents a simple eukaryotic model to study the effects of different compounds on lifespan. We previously demonstrated that apple extracts have anti-ageing effects in this organism because of their antioxidant properties. In particular, the effect is related to the presence in this fruit of polyphenols, which give a large contribution to the antioxidant activity of apples

The objective of this research is to analyze the degree of adherence to transparency requirements and access to information in the electronic portals of the state-owned companies belonging to the states of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Paraná (PR) and Santa Catarina (SC). From a quantitative, descriptive and documentary research, it was possible to show that the state-owned PR companies achieved 76% adherence to transparency, followed by RS and SC state, with 64% and 62%, respectively. Still, 68% of the sample meets the requirements required for electronic sites, being classified as medium degree of adhesion. However, there is still no full adherence, nor even a high degree of adherence to all the analyzed indicators, demonstrating that the supervision of electronic portals needs to be more effective

Aspectos basilares do interacionismo sociodiscursivo: conceitos vygotskyanos revisitados

    Get PDF
In this paper, we will revisit some Vygostkian concepts which underpin the theoretical framework of Socio-Discursive Interactionism (SDI), proposed by Bronckart. From a resumption of studies on Vygotsky about higher mental processes, we will seek to understand the relevance of social relations for language acquisition and, from this, for human psychological development, for their insertion on social activities, and, consequently, for their citizenship education

Nacre, a natural, multi-use, and timely biomaterial for bone graft substitution

    Get PDF
International audienceDuring the past two decades, with a huge and rapidly increasing clinical need for bone regeneration and repair, bone substitutes are more and more seen as a potential solution. Major innovation efforts are being made to develop such substitutes , some having advanced even to clinical practice. It is now time to turn to natural biomaterials. Nacre, or mother-of-pearl, is an organic matrix-calcium carbonate coupled shell structure produced by molluscs. In vivo and in vitro studies have revealed that nacre is osteoinductive, osteoconductive, biocompatible, and biodegradable. With many other outstanding qualities, nacre represents a natural and multi-use biomaterial as a bone graft substitute. This review aims at summarising the current needs in orthopaedic clinics and the challenges for the development of bone substitutes; most of all, we systematically review the physiological characteristics and biological evidence of nacre's effects centred on osteogen-esis, and finally we put forward the potential use of nacre as a bone graft substitute

The transmission of visceral leishmaniasis in the municipality of Guarujá, on the Coast of São Paulo state, Brazil

OBJECTIVE: To perform an entomological survey, evaluating the circulation of Leishmania spp. in sand flies captured from the new foci of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the coastal region of São Paulo state. METHODS: Sand flies were captured from November 2016 to September 2018 using light traps of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), in the neighborhood where VL cases were reported. Leishmania spp. circulation was evaluated by gut dissection and molecular analysis of the females captured. RESULTS: Nyssomyia intermedia was the more frequent species (90,7%) within the 1,203 sand flies captured. We found no flagellates in dissected females, but two pools containing females of Ny. Intermedia presented DNA of L. infantum. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that Ny. intermedia might be involved in the establishment of this new VL focus in Sao Paulo. However, before incriminating this species as a L. infantum vector, further studies should investigate other vectorial capacity parameters, including competence, survival, and feeding habits

BACKGROUND Constitutional mismatch repair deficiency syndrome (CMMRD) is a severe cancer predisposition syndrome resulting in early onset central nervous system (CNS) and other cancers. International guidelines for surveillance exist but no study has systematically evaluated the efficacy of this protocol. METHODS We surveyed all confirmed CMMRD patients in the International Replication Repair Deficiency Consortium. A surveillance protocol consisting of frequent biochemical, endoscopic and imaging (CNS and total body MRI) studies were employed. Survival analyses and efficacy of each method were assessed. RESULTS Surveillance data were collected from 105 CMMRD individuals from 41 countries. Of the 193 malignant tumors, CNS malignancies were the most common (44%). The surveillance protocol uncovered 49 asymptomatic tumors including 16 glioblastomas and medulloblastomas. Five-year overall survival was 89% for tumors discovered by surveillance, and 61% for symptomatic tumors (p\u3c0.004). Similarly, 5-year survival was 82+/-11% and 24+/-6% for surveillance and non-surveillance of brain tumors (p=0.005). Yearly total body and q6 month brain MRI detected asymptomatic cancers in all but 3 symptomatic CNS gliomas. These were tumors uncovered when time between scans was \u3e6 months as per protocol. Finally, of the low grade tumors identified asymptomatically, 5 were low grade gliomas. All of the low grade gliomas, which were not resected transformed to high grade tumors at a median of 1.6 ± 0.9 years. CONCLUSION These data support a survival benefit in CMMRD patients undergoing a surveillance protocol. Adherence to protocol and resection of lower grade lesions may improve survival for patients with CNS tumors
