Affinities and Beyond! Developing Ways of Seeing in Online Spaces
This article presents an insider view of an online community of adults involved in sharing digital photography through a host website, Flickr. It describes how reciprocal teaching and learning partnerships in a dynamic multimodal environment are achieved through the creation of a âThird Spaceâ or âAffinity Spaceâ, where âFunds of Knowledgeâ are shared and processed in such a way that new meanings and discourses are generated. It is argued that this process is evidence of valuable learning and of the deepening of global understandings within the local space of Flickr. The new understandings are at least partly identifiable on the Flickr space, through the co-constructed âfolksonomyâ or âonline taxonomyâ of ways of looking at the world. Further, the article provides evidence for broadening existing definitions of literacy, at a time when the visual mode increasingly works interactively with verbal cues and explanations
Sociology and postcolonialism: another 'missing' revolution?
Sociology is usually represented as having emerged alongside European modernity. The latter is frequently understood as sociology's special object with sociology itself a distinctively modern form of explanation. The period of sociology's disciplinary formation was also the heyday of European colonialism, yet the colonial relationship did not figure in the development of sociological understandings. While the recent emergence of postcolonialism appears to have initiated a reconsideration of understandings of modernity, with the development of theories of multiple modernities, I suggest that this engagement is more an attempt at recuperating the transformative aspect of postcolonialism than engaging with its critiques. In setting out the challenge of postcolonialism to dominant sociological accounts, I also address `missing feminist/queer revolutions', suggesting that by engaging with postcolonialism there is the potential to transform sociological understandings by opening up a dialogue beyond the simple pluralism of identity claims

Community-Based Field Experiences in Teacher Education: Possibilities for a pedagogical third space

teacher education programs. Through a qualitative case study, prospective teachersâ work with
homeless youth in an after-school initiative is presented. Framing community-based field experiences
in teacher education through âthird spaceâ theory, the article discusses the value that such
experiences have for prospective teachersâ learning. The goals of the article align with the
commitment to preparing a future teaching force for the diverse educational settings that they will
encounter in the twenty-first century
Discourses of antagonism and desire : marketing for international students in neighbourhood schools
This paper explores the consequences of these discourses for the ways that international students are identified and positioned within school communities. My argument is developed in four sections. The first describes my ongoing exploration into the impact of international student programmes in Australia. The second exemplifies my argument: exploring the day-to-day experiences of vice principals in two Victorian government state secondary schools as they market their schools, and examining the systemic and ontological discourses played out within those conversations. The third interrogates discourses of identity and difference, neo-liberalism and nave cosmopolitanism which I find shape teacher conversations about international student programmes. In the final section, I argue that the impact of the discourse formations implicit in teacher talk about international student programmes has been the objectification of international students and their ambivalent inclusion within the school community.<br /
RE: pedagogy â after neutrality
Within the UK and in many parts of the world, official accounts of what it is to make sense of religion are framed within a rhetorics of neutrality in which such study is premised upon the possibility of dispassionate engagement and analysis. This paper, which is largely theoretical in scope, explores both the affordances and the costs of such an approach which has become âblack boxedâ on account of the work that it achieves. A series of new orientations within the academy that are broadly associated with post-structuralist philosophies, feminist and post-colonial studies, together with insights from Science and Technology Studies, question the plausibility of these claims for neutrality whilst in turn raising a series of new questions and priorities. It therefore becomes necessary to re-think and re-frame what it is to make sense of religious and cultural difference after neutrality. The gathering and co-ordination of new planes of sense-making that are responsive to an emergent series of epistemological, ontological, and ethical orientations are considered. Some of the distinctive pedagogical implications of such an approach that engages material practice, difference and uncertainty are then entertained
Ethnicity and consumption: South Asian food shopping patterns in Britain 1947-75

identities and food consumption, with particular reference to business management
studies. It focuses on the food shopping practices of south Asians in Britain in the
period 1947 to 1975, to illustrate the need for more historically contextualized studies
that can provide a more nuanced exploration of any interconnections between ethnic
identity and shopping behaviour. The article draws on a reasonably long-standing
interest in ethnicity and consumption in marketing studies, and explores the
conceptual use of acculturation within this literature. The arguments put forward are
framed by recent interdisciplinary studies of the broader relationship between
consumption and identity, which stress the importance of contextualizing any
influence of ethnic identifications through a wider consideration of other factors
including societal status, gender and age, rather than giving it singular treatment. The
article uses a body of empirical research drawn from recent oral histories, to explore
how these factors informed everyday shopping practices among south Asians in Britain. It examines some of the shopping and wider food provisioning strategies
adopted by early immigrants on arrival in Britain. It considers the interaction between
the south Asian population and the changing retail structure, in the context of the
development of self-service and the supermarket. Finally, it demonstrates how age,
gender and socioeconomic status interacted with ethnic identities to produce
variations in shopping patterns
Mixed marriages and transnational families in the intercultural context : a case study of African-Spanish couples in Catalonia, Spain

Ămbit de les Ciències Socials. 2008One of the consequences of international migration and the permanent settlement of immigrants in southern EU countries is the growing number of inter-country marriages and the formation of transnational families. Using both quantitative and qualitative data, this article examines patterns of endogamy and exogamy (i.e. marriage within/outside a particular group or category) among African immigrants in Catalonia, focusing on bi-national Senegalese- and Gambian-Spanish couples. Socio-demographic profiles, transnationality, the dynamics of cultural change or retention, and the formation of transcultural identities are explored. The evidence presented suggests that social-class factors are more important than cultural origins in patterns of endogamy and exogamy, in the dynamics of living together and in the bringing-up of children of mixed unions. Such a conclusion negates culturalists' explanations of endogamy and exogamy while, at the same time, emphasising the role of social actors as active subjects in these processes. I further argue that mixed couples and their offspring deal-to a greater or lesser extent-with multiple localisations and cultural backgrounds (i.e. here and there), rather than experiencing a 'clash between two cultures'. Therefore, it would be a mistake to pretend that multicultural links do not exist and that they cannot be revitalised and functional. The paper starts and ends by addressing the complexities of processes of interculturalism, resisting an interpretation of hybridity and segregation as contradictory or exclusive realities
Nomadic subjects: Young black women in Britain
This paper reads the fragmented life stories of four young black women in the UK, at a transitional point of their lives, when they are making decisions about their post-compulsory education. We argue that the notion of nomadism is a useful, albeit not unproblematic, tool to theorise the multifarious ways that these black young women negotiate subject positions, make choices and shape their lives. We further trace, how these women are struggling against fixity and unity and attempting to speak and act outside or beyond the positions available within the collectivities to which they belong. Finally, we point out that in travelling around unstable and contradictory subject positions they are sometimes caught up within fears of distortion, and ultimately choose to remain âat homeâ. This âhomeâ, however, is rather formless and uncentred and far from being easily localizable and defined, interrogates ideas and perceptions about territories and borders. It is through this ânew imageâ, that we can perhaps start thinking about âbeing at homeâ in different ways, beyond restrictions and limitations of families, classes, gender groups, races or nations
