Dynamic behavior and damping capacity of auxetic foam pads
A novel set of auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) open cell polyurethane foam has been developed and tested under dynamic
loading conditions to assess the viscoelastic response under white noise random excitation and compressive cycling. Foam pads
normalized to standard ISO 13753 have been tested at room temperature and frequency bandwidth 10-500 Hz to assess
transmissibility characteristics for possible antivibration glove applications. The results show that the ISO 13753 normalized
transmissibility for these foams falls below 0.6 above 100 Hz, with lower peak maximum stresses under indentation compared to
conventional open cell solids. These results suggest possible use of the auxetic foam for pads or linens against « white fingers«
vibration applications. Further tests have been conducted on cyclic compressive loading up to 3 Hz and loading ratios of 0.95 for
loading histories up to 100000 cycles. The damping capacity of the auxetic foams showed and increase by a factor 10 compared
to the conventional foams used to manufacture the negative Poisson's ratio ones, and stiffness degradation stabilized after few tens on cycles
Stacking layer sequence effects for glass fibre/epoxy resin cross-ply laminates
This work describes the effect of the stacking sequence over the distribution of the deformation and stress fields through the thickness of the laminate. The laminates are made of epoxy resin and glass fibres, having the ratio of 0 to 90° plies equal to 1. This stacking sequence is applied to obtain composite laminates with different thicknesses. The study presented in this paper is focused on the linear static behaviour of the cross/ply laminates by means of finite-element models developed using the commercial codes ANSYS 6.1 and LUSAS 15.3. The numerical models represent three-point bending loading cases. A viscoelastic analysis of the laminates based on the correspondence principle is also performed. The results from the finite element models show good agreement with those obtained using the Classical Laminate theory, while the viscoelastic storage modulus and loss factors distribution indicate the best stacking sequences for structural dynamics applications, such as spring leaves for novel car suspension systems.
Experimental Analysis of Behavior and Damage of Sandwich Composite Materials in Three-Point Bending. Part 2. Fatigue Test Results and Damage Mechanisms

Auxetic foam for snowsport safety devices
Skiing and snowboarding are popular snow-sports with inherent risk of injury. There is potential to reduce the prevalence of injuries by improving and implementing snow-sport safety devices with the application of advanced materials. This paper investigates the application of auxetic foam to snow-sport safety devices. Composite pads - consisting of foam covered with a semi-rigid shell - were investigated as a simple model of body armour and a large 70 x 355 x 355 mm auxetic foam sample was fabricated as an example crash barrier. The thermo-mechanical conversion process was applied to convert open-cell polyurethane foam to auxetic foam. The composite pad with auxetic foam absorbed around three times more energy than the conventional equivalent under quasi-static compression with a concentrated load, indicating potential for body armour applications. An adapted thermo-mechanical process - utilising through-thickness rods to control in-plane compression - was applied to fabricate the large sample with relatively consistent properties throughout, indicating further potential for fabrication of a full size auxetic crash barrier. Further work will create full size prototypes of snow-sport safety devices with comparative testing against current products

Flexural fatigue behavior of cross-ply laminates. An experimental approach
Within an experimental approach we describe the mechanical behavior of different resin-epoxy laminates reinforced with cross-ply Kevlar and glass fibers under conditions of static and cyclic three-point bending. In static tests, we consider the effect of stacking sequence, the thickness of 90°-oriented layers, reinforcement type on the mechanical behavior of laminates under loading and on realization of various damage modes leading to rupture. Cyclic loading studies have been performed in two steps. In the first stage, we inquire into the dependence of the behavior and durability of four glass fiber-reinforced laminate-types on the stacking sequence; the second stage is devoted to studying the dependence of cyclic strength and fatigue behavior of laminates on the reinforcement type. Fatigue tests are carried out in load-control regime for glass and hybrid (Kevlar + glass) fiber laminates. Fatigue curves are constructed in coordinates “stress – number of cycles until fracture” from the criteria corresponding to a drop in stiffness by 5 and 10%. Analysis of the results obtained permits evaluation of the effect of the stacking sequence and the reinforcement type on the behavior of cross-ply laminates in cyclic loading. The presence of Kevlar fibers accounts for nonlinear behavior of laminates in static tests and for low cyclic strength in fatigue tests under three-point bendin
