The NNLO non-singlet QCD analysis of parton distributions based on Bernstein polynomials
A non-singlet QCD analysis of the structure function up to NNLO is
performed based on the Bernstein polynomials approach. We use recently
calculated NNLO anomalous dimension coefficients for the moments of the
structure function in scattering. In the fitting procedure, Bernstein
polynomial method is used to construct experimental moments from the
data of the CCFR collaboration in the region of which is inaccessible
experimentally. We also consider Bernstein averages to obtain some unknown
parameters which exist in the valence quark densities in a wide range of
and . The results of valence quark distributions up to NNLO are in good
agreement with the available theoretical models. In the analysis we determined
the QCD-scale MeV (LO), 259 MeV (NLO)
and 230 MeV (NNLO), corresponding to LO,
NLO and NNLO. We compare our
results for the QCD scale and the with those obtained from

Value of alpha_s from deep-inelastic-scattering data
We report the value of obtained from QCD analysis of
existing data on deep-inelastic scattering of charged leptons off proton and
deuterium and estimate its theoretical uncertainties with particular attention
paid to impact of the high-twist contribution to the deep-inelastic-scattering
structure functions. Taking into account the major uncertainties the value
is obtained. An extrapolation of the LO--NLO--NNLO

Mining Markov Network Surrogates for Value-Added Optimisation
Surrogate fitness functions are a popular technique for speeding up metaheuristics, replacing calls to a costly fitness function with calls to a cheap model. However, surrogates also represent an explicit model of the fitness function, which can be exploited beyond approximating the fitness of solutions. This paper proposes that mining surrogate fitness models can yield useful additional information on the problem to the decision maker, adding value to the optimisation process. An existing fitness model based on Markov networks is presented and applied to the optimisation of glazing on a building facade. Analysis of the model reveals how its parameters point towards the global optima of the problem after only part of the optimisation run, and reveals useful properties like the relative sensitivities of the problem variables
New Approach to GUTs
We introduce a new string-inspired approach to the subject of grand
unification which allows the GUT scale to be small, \lesssim 200 TeV, so that
it is within the reach of {\em conceivable} laboratory accelerated colliding
beam devices. The key ingredient is a novel use of the heterotic string
symmetry group physics ideas to render baryon number violating effects small
enough to have escaped detection to date. This part of the approach involves
new unknown parameters to be tested experimentally. A possible hint at the
existence of these new parameters may already exist in the EW precision data

The 2009 World Average of
Measurements of , the coupling strength of the Strong Interaction
between quarks and gluons, are summarised and an updated value of the world
average of is derived. Building up on previous reviews,
special emphasis is laid on the most recent determinations of . These
are obtained from -decays, from global fits of electroweak precision data
and from measurements of the proton structure function \F_2, which are based
on perturbative QCD calculations up to ; from hadronic event
shapes and jet production in \epem annihilation, based on
QCD; from jet production in deep inelastic scattering and from
decays, based on QCD; and from heavy quarkonia based on
unquenched QCD lattice calculations. Applying pragmatic methods to deal with
possibly underestimated errors and/or unknown correlations, the world average
value of results in . The
measured values of , covering energy scales from Q \equiv \mtau
= 1.78 GeV to 209 GeV, exactly follow the energy dependence predicted by QCD
and therefore significantly test the concept af Asymptotic Freedom.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figure
Measurement of the partial widths of the Z into up- and down-type quarks
Using the entire OPAL LEP1 on-peak Z hadronic decay sample, Z -> qbarq gamma
decays were selected by tagging hadronic final states with isolated photon
candidates in the electromagnetic calorimeter. Combining the measured rates of
Z -> qbarq gamma decays with the total rate of hadronic Z decays permits the
simultaneous determination of the widths of the Z into up- and down-type
quarks. The values obtained, with total errors, were Gamma u = 300 ^{+19}_{-18}
MeV and Gamma d = 381 ^{+12}_{-12} MeV. The results are in good agreement with

Measurement of the Strong Coupling alpha s from Four-Jet Observables in e+e- Annihilation
Data from e+e- annihilation into hadrons at centre-of-mass energies between
91 GeV and 209 GeV collected with the OPAL detector at LEP, are used to study
the four-jet rate as a function of the Durham algorithm resolution parameter
ycut. The four-jet rate is compared to next-to-leading order calculations that
include the resummation of large logarithms. The strong coupling measured from
the four-jet rate is alphas(Mz0)=
0.1182+-0.0003(stat.)+-0.0015(exp.)+-0.0011(had.)+-0.0012(scale)+-0.0013(mass)
in agreement with the world average. Next-to-leading order fits to the
D-parameter and thrust minor event-shape observables are also performed for the
first time. We find consistent results, but with significantly larger

Search for R-Parity Violating Decays of Scalar Fermions at LEP
A search for pair-produced scalar fermions under the assumption that R-parity
is not conserved has been performed using data collected with the OPAL detector
at LEP. The data samples analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of
about 610 pb-1 collected at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) 189-209 GeV. An
important consequence of R-parity violation is that the lightest supersymmetric
particle is expected to be unstable. Searches of R-parity violating decays of
charged sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks have been performed under the
assumptions that the lightest supersymmetric particle decays promptly and that
only one of the R-parity violating couplings is dominant for each of the decay
modes considered. Such processes would yield final states consisting of
leptons, jets, or both with or without missing energy. No significant
single-like excess of events has been observed with respect to the Standard
Model expectations. Limits on the production cross- section of scalar fermions
in R-parity violating scenarios are obtained. Constraints on the supersymmetric
particle masses are also presented in an R-parity violating framework analogous

Measurement of the Hadronic Photon Structure Function F_2^gamma at LEP2
The hadronic structure function of the photon F_2^gamma is measured as a
function of Bjorken x and of the factorisation scale Q^2 using data taken by
the OPAL detector at LEP. Previous OPAL measurements of the x dependence of
F_2^gamma are extended to an average Q^2 of 767 GeV^2. The Q^2 evolution of
F_2^gamma is studied for average Q^2 between 11.9 and 1051 GeV^2. As predicted
by QCD, the data show positive scaling violations in F_2^gamma. Several
parameterisations of F_2^gamma are in agreement with the measurements whereas

Measurement of Rb in e+e- Collisions at 182 - 209 GeV
Measurements of Rb, the ratio of the bbbar cross-section to the qqbar cross-
section in e+e- collisions, are presented. The data were collected by the OPAL
experiment at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 182 GeV and 209 GeV.
Lepton, lifetime and event shape information is used to tag events containing b
quarks with high efficiency. The data are compatible with the Standard Model
expectation. The mean ratio of the eight measurements reported here to the
Standard Model prediction is 1.055+-0.031+-0.037, where the first error is
