    Estimating Column Density in Molecular Clouds with FIR and Sub-mm Emission Maps

    We have used a numerical simulation of a turbulent cloud to synthesize maps of the thermal emission from dust at a variety of far-IR and sub-mm wavelengths. The average column density and external radiation field in the simulation is well matched to clouds such as Perseus and Ophiuchus. We use pairs of single-wavelength emission maps to derive the dust color temperature and column density, and we compare the derived column densities with the true column density. We demonstrate that longer wavelength emission maps yield less biased estimates of column density than maps made towards the peak of the dust emission spectrum. We compare the scatter in the derived column density with the observed scatter in Perseus and Ophiuchus. We find that while in Perseus all of the observed scatter in the emission-derived versus the extinction-derived column density can be attributed to the flawed assumption of isothermal dust along each line of sight, in Ophiuchus there is additional scatter above what can be explained by the isothermal assumption. Our results imply that variations in dust emission properties within a molecular cloud are not necessarily a major source of uncertainty in column density measurements.Comment: Accepted to ApJ Letter

    Photoelectric cross-sections of gas and dust in protoplanetary disks

    We provide simple polynomial fits to the X-ray photoelectric cross-sections (0.03 < E < 10keV) for mixtures of gas and dust found in protoplanetary disks. Using the solar elemental abundances of Asplund et al. (2009) we treat the gas and dust components separately, facilitating the further exploration evolutionary processes such as grain settling and gain growth. We find that blanketing due to advanced grain-growth (a_max > 1 micron) can reduce the X-ray opacity of dust appreciably at E_X ~ 1keV, coincident with the peak of typical T Tauri X-ray spectra. However, the reduction of dust opacity by dust settling, which is known to occur in protoplanetary disks, is probably a more significant effect. The absorption of 1-10keV X-rays is dominated by gas opacity once the dust abundance has been reduced to about 1% of its diffuse interstellar value. The gas disk establishes a floor to the opacity at which point X-ray transport becomes insensitive to further dust evolution.     Effect of implementing a heart failure admission care bundle on hospital readmission and mortality rates: interrupted time series study

    This study aimed to evaluate the impact of developing and implementing a care bundle intervention to improve care for patients with acute heart failure admitted to a large London hospital. The intervention comprised three elements, targeted within 24 hours of admission: N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) test, transthoracic Doppler two-dimensional echocardiography and specialist review by cardiology team. The SHIFT-Evidence approach to quality improvement was used. During implementation, July 2015–July 2017, 1169 patients received the intervention. An interrupted time series design was used to evaluate impact on patient outcomes, including 15 618 admissions for 8951 patients. Mixed-effects multiple Poisson and log-linear regression models were fitted for count and continuous outcomes, respectively. Effect sizes are slope change ratios pre-intervention and post-intervention. The intervention was associated with reductions in emergency readmissions between 7 and 90 days (0.98, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.00), although not readmissions between 0 and 7 days post-discharge. Improvements were seen in in-hospital mortality (0.96, 95% CI 0.95 to 0.98), and there was no change in trend for hospital length of stay. Care process changes were also evaluated. Compliance with NT-proBNP testing was already high in 2014/2015 (162 of 163, 99.4%) and decreased slightly, with increased numbers audited, to 2016/2017 (1082 of 1101, 98.2%). Over this period, rates of echocardiography (84.7–98.9%) and specialist input (51.6–90.4%) improved. Care quality and outcomes can be improved for patients with acute heart failure using a care bundle approach. A systematic approach to quality improvement, and robust evaluation design, can be beneficial in supporting successful improvement and learning

    Polarization of Dust Emission in Clumpy Molecular Clouds and Cores

    Grain alignment theory has reached the stage where quantitative predictions of the degree of alignment and its variations with optical depth are possible. With the goal of studying the effect of clumpiness on the sub-millimeter and far infrared polarization we computed the polarization due to alignment via radiative torques within clumpy models of cores and molecular clouds. Our models were based upon a highly inhomogeneous simulation of compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence. The P-I relations for our models reproduce those seen in observations. We show that the degree of polarization observed is extremely sensitive to the upper grain size cut-off, and is less sensitive to changes in the radiative anisotropy. Furthermore, despite a variety of dust temperatures along a single line of sight through our core and amongst dust grains of different sizes, the assumption of isothermality amongst the aligned grains does not introduce a significant error. Our calculations indicate that sub-mm polarization vectors can be reasonably good tracers for the underlying magnetic field structure, even for relatively dense clouds (A_V~10 to the cloud center). The current predictive power of the grain alignment theory should motivate future polarization observations using the next generation of multi-wavelength sub-mm polarimeters such as those proposed for SOFIA.Comment: 39 pages. 15 figures.     Microplastics disrupt hermit crab shell selection

    Microplastics (plastics < 5 mm) are a potential threat to marine biodiversity. However, the effects of microplastic pollution on animal behaviour and cognition are poorly understood. We used shell selection in common European hermit crabs (Pagurus bernhardus) as a model to test whether microplastic exposure impacts the essential survival behaviours of contacting, investigating and entering an optimal shell. We kept 64 female hermit crabs in tanks containing either polyethylene spheres (n = 35) or no plastic (n = 29) for 5 days. We then transferred subjects into suboptimal shells and placed them in an observation tank with an optimal alternative shell. Plastic-exposed hermit crabs showed impaired shell selection: they were less likely than controls to contact optimal shells or enter them. They also took longer to contact and enter the optimal shell. Plastic exposure did not affect time spent investigating the optimal shell. These results indicate that microplastics impair cognition (information-gathering and processing), disrupting an essential survival behaviour in hermit crabs

    Kinetic analysis to describe co-operative redox enhancement effects exhibited by bimetallic Au-Pd systems in aerobic oxidation

    Recent work has demonstrated that for bimetallic Au–Pd systems, the rate of catalytic alcohol and formyl dehydrogenation (DH) is intrinsically linked to the rate of oxygen reduction (ORR) within the same system. Herein, the rate enhancement as a result of the coupling between these two processes is assessed via kinetic analysis for the oxidative dehydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The influence of the Au and Pd molar ratio is explored for a physical mixture of carbon-supported catalysts by changing the mass of each 1 wt% catalyst. Importantly, the activity of the bimetallic system exceeds the sum of the monometallic analogues, at all molar ratios. It is shown that by considering the coupling between two individual reactions (DH and ORR), the kinetic analysis of the system predicts where the maxima in monometallic and bimetallic activity will be observed. The accuracy of the model provides further evidence and understanding of cooperative redox enhancement (CORE) effects observed in bimetallic, heterogeneous catalytic systems

    Adapting effects of emotional expression in anxiety: evidence for an enhanced late positive potential

    An adaptation paradigm was used to investigate the influence of a previously experienced visual context on the interpretation of ambiguous emotional expressions. Affective classification of fear-neutral ambiguous expressions was performed following repeated exposure to either fearful or neutral faces. There was a shift in the behavioural classification of morphs towards ‘fear’ following adaptation to neutral compared to adaptation to fear with a non-significant trend towards the high anxiety group compared to the low being more influenced by the context. The event-related potential (ERP) data revealed a more pronounced late positive potential (LPP), beginning at ~400 ms post-stimulus onset, in the high but not the low anxiety group following adaptation to neutral compared to fear. In addition, as the size of the behavioural adaptation increased there was a linear increase in the magnitude of the late-LPP. However, context-sensitivity effects are not restricted to trait anxiety, with similar effects observed with state anxiety and depression. These data support the proposal that negative moods are associated with increased sensitivity to visual contextual influences from top-down elaborative modulations, as reflected in an enhanced late positive potential deflection

    Chimpanzees Share Forbidden Fruit

    The sharing of wild plant foods is infrequent in chimpanzees, but in chimpanzee communities that engage in hunting, meat is frequently used as a ‘social tool’ for nurturing alliances and social bonds. Here we report the only recorded example of regular sharing of plant foods by unrelated, non-provisioned wild chimpanzees, and the contexts in which these sharing behaviours occur. From direct observations, adult chimpanzees at Bossou (Republic of Guinea, West Africa) very rarely transferred wild plant foods. In contrast, they shared cultivated plant foods much more frequently (58 out of 59 food sharing events). Sharing primarily consists of adult males allowing reproductively cycling females to take food that they possess. We propose that hypotheses focussing on ‘food-for-sex and -grooming’ and ‘showing-off’ strategies plausibly account for observed sharing behaviours. A changing human-dominated landscape presents chimpanzees with fresh challenges, and our observations suggest that crop-raiding provides adult male chimpanzees at Bossou with highly desirable food commodities that may be traded for other currencies
