Direct path from microscopic mechanics to Debye shielding, Landau damping, and wave-particle interaction

The derivation of Debye shielding and Landau damping from the NN-body description of plasmas is performed directly by using Newton's second law for the NN-body system. This is done in a few steps with elementary calculations using standard tools of calculus, and no probabilistic setting. Unexpectedly, Debye shielding is encountered together with Landau damping. This approach is shown to be justified in the one-dimensional case when the number of particles in a Debye sphere becomes large. The theory is extended to accommodate a correct description of trapping and chaos due to Langmuir waves. Shielding and collisional transport are found to be two related aspects of the repulsive deflections of electrons, in such a way that each particle is shielded by all other ones while keeping in uninterrupted motion.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1310.3096, arXiv:1210.154

The sectional curvature remains positive when taking quotients by certain nonfree actions

We study some cases when the sectional curvature remains positive under the taking of quotients by certain nonfree isometric actions of Lie groups. We consider the actions of the groups S1S^1 and S3S^3 such that the quotient space can be endowed with a smooth structure using the fibrations S3/S1≃S2S^3/S^1{\simeq}S^2 and S7/S3≃S4S^7/S^3\simeq S^4. We prove that the quotient space carries a metric of positive sectional curvature, provided that the original metric has positive sectional curvature on all 2-planes orthogonal to the orbits of the action.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure. On the stability and spectrum of non-supersymmetric AdS(5) solutions of M-theory compactified on Kahler-Einstein spaces

Eleven-dimensional supergravity admits non-supersymmetric solutions of the form AdS(5)xM(6) where M(6) is a positive Kahler-Einstein space. We show that the necessary and sufficient condition for such solutions to be stable against linearized bosonic supergravity perturbations can be expressed as a condition on the spectrum of the Laplacian acting on (1,1)-forms on M(6). For M(6)=CP(3), this condition is satisfied, although there are scalars saturating the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound. If M(6) is a product S(2)xM(4) (where M(4) is Kahler-Einstein) then there is an instability if M(4) has a continuous isometry. We show that a potential non-perturbative instability due to 5-brane nucleation does not occur. The bosonic Kaluza-Klein spectrum is determined in terms of eigenvalues of operators on M(6).Comment: 21 pages. v2: Includes SU(4) quantum numbers for CP3 case, typos fixed, refs adde

Semi-classical stability of AdS NUT instantons

    Get PDF
The semi-classical stability of several AdS NUT instantons is studied. Throughout, the notion of stability is that of stability at the one-loop level of Euclidean Quantum Gravity. Instabilities manifest themselves as negative eigenmodes of a modified Lichnerowicz Laplacian acting on the transverse traceless perturbations. An instability is found for one branch of the AdS-Taub-Bolt family of metrics and it is argued that the other branch is stable. It is also argued that the AdS-Taub-NUT family of metrics are stable. A component of the continuous spectrum of the modified Lichnerowicz operator on all three families of metrics is found.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures; references adde

Aktifitas Ekstrak Jahe Merah Dalam Menurunkan Asam Urat Pada Kelinci Serta Isolasi Dan Identifikasi Senyawa Bioaktifnya

Semiclassical measures and the Schroedinger flow on Riemannian manifolds

In this article we study limits of Wigner distributions (the so-called semiclassical measures) corresponding to sequences of solutions to the semiclassical Schroedinger equation at times scales αh\alpha_{h} tending to infinity as the semiclassical parameter hh tends to zero (when αh=1/h\alpha _{h}=1/h this is equivalent to consider solutions to the non-semiclassical Schreodinger equation). Some general results are presented, among which a weak version of Egorov's theorem that holds in this setting. A complete characterization is given for the Euclidean space and Zoll manifolds (that is, manifolds with periodic geodesic flow) via averaging formulae relating the semiclassical measures corresponding to the evolution to those of the initial states. The case of the flat torus is also addressed; it is shown that non-classical behavior may occur when energy concentrates on resonant frequencies. Moreover, we present an example showing that the semiclassical measures associated to a sequence of states no longer determines those of their evolutions. Finally, some results concerning the equation with a potential are presented.Comment: 18 pages; Theorems 1,2 extendend to deal with arbitrary time-scales; references adde

Upstream-binding factor is sequestered into herpes simplex virus type 1 replication compartments

    Get PDF
Previous reports have shown that adenovirus recruits nucleolar protein upstream-binding factor (UBF) into adenovirus DNA replication centres. Here, we report that despite having a different mode of viral DNA replication, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) also recruits UBF into viral DNA replication centres. Moreover, as with adenovirus, enhanced green fluorescent protein-tagged fusion proteins of UBF inhibit viral DNA replication. We propose that UBF is recruited to the replication compartments to aid replication of HSV-1 DNA. In addition, this is a further example of the role of nucleolar components in viral life cycle

On the local structure of Lorentzian Einstein manifolds with parallel distribution of null lines

We study transformations of coordinates on a Lorentzian Einstein manifold with a parallel distribution of null lines and show that the general Walker coordinates can be simplified. In these coordinates, the full Lorentzian Einstein equation is reduced to equations on a family of Einstein Riemannian metrics.Comment: Dedicated to Dmitri Vladimirovich Alekseevsky on his 70th birthda
