The effect of age and font size on reading text on handheld computers
Though there have been many studies of computer based text reading, only a few have considered the small screens of handheld computers. This paper presents an investigation into the effect of varying font size between 2 and 16 point on reading text on a handheld computer. By using both older and younger participants the possible effects of age were examined. Reading speed and accuracy were measured and subjective views of participants recorded. Objective results showed that there was little difference in reading performance above 6 point, but subjective comments from participants showed a preference for sizes in the middle range. We therefore suggest, for reading tasks, that designers of interfaces for mobile computers provide fonts in the range of 8-12 point to maximize readability for the widest range of users
Non-local Thirring model at finite-temperature
We extend a recently proposed non-local and non-covariant version of the
Thirring model to the finite-temperature case. We obtain a completely bosonized
expression for the partition function, describing the thermodynamics of the
collective modes which are the underlying excitations of this system. From this
result we derive closed formulae for the free-energy, specific-heat, two-point
correlation functions and momentum distribution, as functionals of
electron-electron coupling potentials.Comment: 23 pages, latex, no figure

Joint inversion of P-wave velocity and density, application to La Soufrière of Guadeloupe hydrothermal system
International audienceWe present the result of a 3-D gravity and P-wave traveltime joint inversion applied to the hydrothermal system of La Soufri'ere of Guadeloupe. The joint inversion process is used here to overcome the different resolution limitations attached to the two data sets. P-wave traveltimes were obtained from three active seismic surveys that were conducted from 2001 to 2007. Gravity data collected during a microgravity campaign is described in a companion paper. We use a joint inversion process based on a Bayesian formulation and a deterministic iterative approach. The coupling between slowness and density is introduced through a supplementary constraint in the misfit function that tries to minimize the distance between parameter values and a theoretical relationship. This relationship is derived from measurements on samples representative of Mt Pel'ee of Martinique and La Soufri'ere volcanoes. We chose a grid discretization that leads to an under-determined problem that we regularize using spatial exponential covariance between the nodes parameters. Our results are compared to geophysical electromagnetic results obtained using resistivity and VLF surveys. They confirm the presence of highly contrasted dense/fast and light/slow zones in La Soufri'ere dome and crater basement. Our images suggest however that some non-conductive zones may be massive andesite bodies rather than argilized zones, and that these bodies may have deeper roots than hypothesized
Benthic oxygen exchange over a heterogeneous Zostera noltei meadow in a temperate coastal ecosystem
Seagrass meadows support intense but highly variable benthic metabolic rates that still need to be better evaluated to determine an accurate trophic status. The present study assessed how seagrasses and associated benthic macrofauna control spatiotemporal changes in benthic oxygen exchanges within a temperate bay. Based on seasonal sampling over a complete year cycle, the diffusive oxygen uptake (DOU), community respiration (CR) and gross primary production (GPP) were measured in a Zostera noltei meadow within Arcachon Bay, taking into account its spatial heterogeneity. Oxygen fluxes were assessed in sediment cores, within which benthic macrofauna and seagrass abundances and biomasses were quantified. The presence of Z. noltei did not significantly affect the DOU. Seasonal changes in CR and GPP correlated strongly with temperature in the presence of Z. noltei. The characteristics of benthic macrofauna associated with Z. noltei only weakly affected seasonal changes in CR. High spatial changes in both GPP and CR were mainly driven by the aboveground biomass of Z. noltei. When extrapolated to the whole intertidal area of the bay, in spite of limitations, our results suggest (1) overall higher contributions to CR and GPP from the seagrass meadow than from bare sediments, even though alternative primary producers in bare sediments (likely microphytobenthos) contributed significantly during winter; (2) an annual decrease in CR and GPP of 35 and 41%, respectively, resulting from the decline in Z. noltei of 25% between 2005 and 2007; and (3) a strong seasonality in the magnitude of this decrease, which was high during autumn and low during winter.
The Off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman Relation and Its Discrepancy
We study the off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation (ODGTR) and its
discrepancy (ODGTD) in the N, Delta, pi sector through O(p^2) using heavy
baryon chiral perturbation theory. To this order, the ODGTD and axial vector N
to Delta transition radius are determined solely by low energy constants. Loop
corrections appear at O(p^4). For low-energy constants of natural size, the
ODGTD would represent a ~ 2% correction to the ODGTR. We discuss the
implications of the ODGTR and ODGTD for lattice and quark model calculations of
the transition form factors and for parity-violating electroexcitation of the
Delta.Comment: 11 pages, 1 eps figur
New developments in threshold pion photo- and electroproduction
Photoproduction of neutral and charged pions off nucleons and deuterium has
been precisely calculated in baryon chiral perturbation theory. I review the
predictions with the accurate data that have become available over the last few
years. Some progress in the description of neutral pion electroproduction off
protons is also discussed.Comment: 17 pp, LaTeX, uses epsf and lamuphys.sty, invited plenary talk,

Development of real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays to quantify insulin-like growth factor receptor and insulin receptor expression in equine tissue
The insulin-like growth factor system (insulin-like growth factor 1, insulin-like growth factor
2, insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor, insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor and six insulinlike
growth factor-binding proteins) and insulin are essential to muscle metabolism and most
aspects of male and female reproduction. Insulin-like growth factor and insulin play important
roles in the regulation of cell growth, differentiation and the maintenance of cell differentiation
in mammals. In order to better understand the local factors that regulate equine physiology,
such as muscle metabolism and reproduction (e.g., germ cell development and fertilisation),
real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assays for quantification of equine
insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor and insulin receptor messenger ribonucleic acid were
developed. The assays were sensitive: 192 copies/μL and 891 copies/μL for insulin-like growth
factor 1 receptor, messenger ribonucleic acid and insulin receptor respectively (95% limit of
detection), and efficient: 1.01 for the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor assay and 0.95 for the
insulin receptor assay. The assays had a broad linear range of detection (seven logs for insulinlike
growth factor 1 receptor and six logs for insulin receptor). This allowed for analysis of
very small amounts of messenger ribonucleic acid. Low concentrations of both insulin-like
growth factor 1 receptor and insulin receptor messenger ribonucleic acid were detected in
endometrium, lung and spleen samples, whilst high concentrations were detected in heart,
muscle and kidney samples, this was most likely due to the high level of glucose metabolism
and glucose utilisation by these tissues. The assays developed for insulin-like growth factor 1
receptor and insulin receptor messenger ribonucleic acid expression have been shown to work
on equine tissue and will contribute to the understanding of insulin and insulin-like growth
factor 1 receptor physiology in the horse.http://www.ojvr.orgam201
Path-Integral bosonization of a non-local interaction and its application to the study of 1-d many-body systems
We extend the path-integral approach to bosonization to the case in which the
fermionic interaction is non-local. In particular we obtain a completely
bosonized version of a Thirring-like model with currents coupled by general
(symmetric) bilocal potentials. The model contains the Tomonaga-Luttinger model
as a special case; exploiting this fact we study the basic properties of the
1-d spinless fermionic gas: fermionic correlators, the spectrum of collective
modes, etc. Finally we discuss the generalization of our procedure to the
non-Abelian case, thus providing a new tool to be used in the study of 1-d
many-body systems with spin-flipping interactions.Comment: 26 pages LATEX, La Plata 94-0
Quantum algebra in the mixed light pseudoscalar meson states
In this paper, we investigate the entanglement degrees of pseudoscalar meson
states via quantum algebra Y(su(3)). By making use of transition effect of
generators J of Y(su(3)), we construct various transition operators in terms of
J of Y(su(3)), and act them on eta-pion-eta mixing meson state. The
entanglement degrees of both the initial state and final state are calculated
with the help of entropy theory. The diagrams of entanglement degrees are
presented. Our result shows that a state with desired entanglement degree can
be achieved by acting proper chosen transition operator on an initial state.
This sheds new light on the connect among quantum information, particle physics
and Yangian algebra.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
