Extended sources in the XMM-Newton slew survey

The low background, good spatial resolution and great sensitivity of the EPIC-pn camera on XMM-Newton give useful limits for the detection of extended sources even during the short exposures made during slewing maneouvers. In this paper we attempt to illustrate the potential of the XMM-Newton slew survey as a tool for analysing flux-limited samples of clusters of galaxies and other sources of spatially extended X-ray emission.Comment: 2 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the proceedings of "The X-ray Universe 2005", San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Spain), 26-30 September 200

The XMM-Newton Slew Survey: towards the XMMSL1 catalogue

The XMM-Newton satellite is the most sensitive X-ray observatory flown to date due to the great collecting area of its mirrors coupled with the high quantum efficiency of the EPIC detectors. It performs slewing manoeuvers between observation targets tracking almost circular orbits through the ecliptic poles due to the Sun constraint. Slews are made with the EPIC cameras open and the other instruments closed, operating with the observing mode set to the one of the previous pointed observation and the medium filter in place. Slew observations from the EPIC-pn camera in FF, eFF and LW modes provide data, resulting in a maximum of 15 seconds of on-source time. These data can be used to give a uniform survey of the X-ray sky, at great sensitivity in the hard band compared with other X-ray all-sky surveys.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of "The X-ray Universe 2005", San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Spain), 26-30 September 200

Liquidity provision: lessons from a natural experiment

We study the reaction of more than 60,000 firms to a large unexpected liquidity shock in Spain during a severe recessionary period. The Spanish central government repaid in 2012 almost 30bn euros (approximately 3% of GDP) of arrears that Territorial Administrations had been accumulating for years. We assess the economic impact of the plan using two alternative estimation strategies. First, we use a differences-in-differences (DID) approach that exploits heterogeneity in the size of the liquidity received by firms. Second, we take advantage of the plan's plausibly exogenous disbursement implementation and run a DID procedure using as control group some firms that were paid a year later. Overall, we find that a governmental liquidity injection during a recession increases corporate investment significantly: on average firms use 4% of cash transfers for investment. This effect is stronger for firms with lower default risk and higher investment opportunities. Firms with higher default risk are more prone to repay financial debt. On average, firms use 8% of cash transfers to repay financial debt.Vicente also acknowledges nancial assistance from the International Mobility Program UC3M

Here we present a study about the present conservation status of all the varieties of the Andalusian Hound dog breed attending to the vulnerability criteria stabilised for the livestock species. We concluded the existence of six rare varieties in the breed; a group of three varieties (big size-short hair, small size-hard hair and small size-long hair) in a critical situation; and other three varieties (big size-long hair, midsizelong hair and small size- short hair) in vulnerability. The remaining varieties are stable or they genetic improvement is possible. Finally we propose a preservation plan of the endangered varieties attending to zootechnic, socio-economic and cultural aspects.

The breeding program of the Spanish-Arabian horse is in process of development and, for this reason, is necessary to know its population structure from the information registered in the Herd Book to design strategy for its improvement and utilization. The demographic parameters were calculated having a census of 1041 animals, taking part of the selective nucleus; the effective population size was 1036.94 (553 females and 488 males) with a sex ratio of 1.13. With a correct reproductive management we expect an increasing of the inbreeding rate by generation of 0.000482 (0.048%) and by year of 0.000055 (0.005%), something expected because the total generational interval of 8.65 years (females 8.95 and males 8.31), value too high in the equine species, but common, because of a lot of animals are employed only in sport activities. The level of replacement observed was 12.66% in females and 11.68% in males, with mean ages of 8 and 9 years in males and females respectively. The good management of the genetic progress is demonstrated, also maintaining the level of genetic variability and dynamism of the breed.

Tucumanin, a β-hydroxy-γ-lactone bistetrahydrofuranic acetogenin from Annona cherimolia, is a potent inhibitor of mitochondrial complex I

A new β-hydroxy-γ-methyl-γ-lactone bistetrahydrofuranic acetogenin, tucumanin, with the infrequent symmetrical threo/trans/threo/trans/ threo relative configuration at the tetrahydrofuran rings was isolated from Annona cherimolia (Annonaceae) seeds. The inhibitory potency on the mitochondrial complex I of acetogenins with this relative configuration (tucumanin and asimicin) was compared with that shown by the corresponding pairs with an asymmetrical threo/trans/threo/trans/erythro relative configuration (laherradurin/rolliniastatin-2, and itrabin/molvizarin). All these compounds act as selective inhibitors of mitochondrial complex 1 in the 0.18 - 1.55 nM range.Fil: Barrachina, Isabel. Universidad de Valencia; EspañaFil: Neske, Adriana.
