On Northern Irish English: A Phonological and Morphosyntactic Description

The present paper reviews the phonological and morphosyntactic aspects of the Northern Irish English (NIrE) variety. NIrE is the dialect of English spoken within the region of Northern Ireland, which officially belongs to the United Kingdom. One of the main peculiarities of NIrE is the substrate influence it has undergone from the Irish language. However, in contrast to Southern Irish English (SIrE), what is distinctive in NIrE is the phonological substrate influence it received from Scots, which is a Celtic language that originated in Scotland, and came into contact with NIrE in the seventeenth century due to Scottish settlements in Northern Ireland. Furthermore, other factors such as the political situation in the twentieth century in Northern Ireland contributed to the peculiar development that NIrE underwent as opposed to SIrE in the Republic of Ireland. Due to the Enactment Act passed in 1920, which stated officially that Northern Ireland belonged to the United Kingdom, the northeastern part of the Emerald Island developed in isolation from other English-speaking areas within the Republic of Ireland such as Dublin. This isolation period implied a distinct linguistic tradition that was delimited to Northern Ireland, where Scots, Irish, seventeenth-century English, and Irish English co-existed. The combination of all these languages and varieties surfaced in the distinctive NIrE dialect, which has been usually tagged by linguists as a ‘hybrid’. This paper will present not only the main historical events that shaped the English spoken in Ireland, but it will also provide a linguistic description of NIrE. Thus, the main phonological and morphosyntactic characteristics of such dialect will be exhibited. As for phonology, NIrE features will be compared to the respective features in ‘Received Pronunciation’ (RP). Regarding morphosyntax, NIrE characteristics will be contrasted with those of Standard British English (StBE). The characteristics are provided first, and in some of the cases the possible substrate influence of Irish or Scots is given on the basis of previous studies (Corrigan, 2010; Filppula, 1999; Hickey, 2010)

De toda su doctrina se ha acogido, ante todo, su concepto de la personalidad criminal como modelo, paradigma o hipótesis de trabajos y reflexiones posteriores.[EU] Jean Pinatel-ek, testu honetan bere lanbide osoarengandik merezi duen ezagutza jasotzen du. 1995eko espainar Kode penal berriari buruz aipamenak.[ES] Ante la tan escasa atención que en castellano se presta a la Victimología en el ámbito doctrinal, legal, judicial, jurisprudencial, penitenciario y policial, comienza el trabajo con un resumen de la actual ciencia victimológica, con especial referencia a los conceptos y las clases de las víctimas y la fuerza virtual de éstas como recreadoras de los derechos y los bienes que la infracción –el delito, cuya existencia se patentiza– ha victimizado y/o destruido. A continuación se analizan las, en cierto sentido, más significativas innovaciones –menos de las esperadas y necesarias– victimológicas en el nuevo código penal (y escasa legislación complementaria), así como las lagunas de más urgente superación. Amaitzeko, polizia herritarrengandik eta biktimengandik “gertu” egotearen pertzepzioa eta balorazio soziala komentatzen dira.[EN] Seeing the lack of attention rendered in the Spanish language to Victimology concerning doctrine, legal, judicial, jurisprudential, penitentiary and police matters, the task is addressed with a summary of current victimology science, stressing upon the reference made to concepts and types of victims and the virtual strength of the latter as recreator of rights and assets that infringement –the offense whose existence has been revealed– has either victimized and/or destroyed. The following is, in a certain sense, an analysis of the most significant victimological innovations –less than could be expected and desired– in the new Criminal Code (and the scarce complementary legislation), plus the lagoons which require the most urgent improvement. Finally, comments are made on the perception and social assessment of the police with regard to its “proximity” to both inhabitants and victims.[FR] Etant donné le peu d’intérêt manifesté en Espagnol pour la Victimologie en matière doctrinale,légale, judiciaire, de jurisprudence, pénitentiaire et policière, le travail débute par un résumé de la science victimologique actuelle. Il fait référence particulièrement aux concepts et aux genres des victimes et à la force virtuelle de ces dernières en tant qu’animatrices des droits et des biens que l’infraction –le délit, dont l’existence devient évidente– a rendu victime et/ou a détruit. Puis, ce travail présente une analyse des innovations victimologiques qui sont, dans un certain sens, les plus notoires –moins de celles qui sont attendues ou nécessaires– dans le nouveau code pénal (et législation complémentaire rare), ainsi que les lacunes en attente d’une solution plus urgente. Il s’achève finalement par un commentaire de la perception et de l’opinion sociale au sujet de la police dans son ”rapprochement” vis-à-vis des citoyens et des victimes.[DE] Mit Rücksicht darauf daß man sich auf Spanish sehr wenig aug belehrend, gesetzlich, gerichtlich, rechtswissenchaftlich, strafrechtlich und politisch Gebiet um die geschädigten Lehre kummert, fängt die Arbeit an mit einem Auszug der heutigen Geschädigter Lehre, mit spezialer Bezug auf die Ideen und die Klassen der Schlacht-opfer und die schlummernde Kraft von diesen als Rechtsschöpfer und die Güter die strafbare Handlung –das Verbrech en dessen Existenz oft verwandschaftliche verhältnisse hat– beschädigt oder vernichtet. Danach werden die wichtigsten Neuerungen– außer die notwendigen und erwarteten –in der Geschädigter Lehre im neuen strafgesetzbuch (und sehr wenig ergänzende Gesetzgebung) analisiert und auch die Lagunen die überwunden werden müssen.Am Ende wird die Wahr nehmung und soziale Wertbestimmung über die Polizei und Ihre Nähe an die Bürger und Schlachtopfer besprochen

¿Derechos y deberes humano-fraternales en las prisiones? (Desde el radicalismo étnico a la paz en el País Vasco)

[ES] Desde la perspectiva de Política penitenciaria fundamental se dibuja la utopía prisional fraternal y se propugnan tres innovaciones inmediatas: voluntariado técnico y humano, abogados-criminólogos al servicio del preso, y movilización internacional. A la luz de la Política penitenciaria aplicada, se analizan los problemas de dispersión y acercamiento de los condenados de ETA, sin olvidar los derechos de sus víctimas directas e indirectas. Se propone una Política penitenciaria alternativa: preventiva y repersonalizadora, con profesionales radicalmente nuevos, desde-hacia la cosmovisión de la esperanza, el futuro y la utopía. Se introducen referencias a las grandes religiones, germen de mayor profundización humana.[EU] Oinarrizko anaitasun espetxe politikaren ikuspegitik, espetxetako anaitasun utopia marrazten da eta berehalako hiru berritasun aldetzen dira: boluntario tekniko eta gizatiarrak, abokatu-kriminologoak presoen zerbitzuan, eta nazioarteko mugialdia. Espetxe politika aplikatuaren argitan, ETAko kondenatuen hurbiltasunaren eta sakabanatasunaren arazoak azterten dira, beren biktima zuzen eta zeharkakoen eskubideak ahaztu gabe. Espetxe politika alternatibo bat proposatzen da: aurrebabestekoa eta pertsonalizatzailea, profesional berriekin, itxaropenaren, etorkizunaren eta utopiaren munduikusketatik-munduikusketaraino. Erlijio haundiei buruzko aipamenak sartzen dira, giza sakontasun haundiago baten ernamuin modura.[FR] De la perspective de la Politique pénitentiaire fondamentale on dessine l’utopie fraternelle des prisons et on défend trois innovations immédiates: un volontariat technique et humain, des avocats-criminologues au service des détenus, et une mobilisation internationale. Du point de vue de la Politique pénitentiaire appliquée, on analyse les problèmes de dispersion et rapprochement des condamnés du groupe terroriste E.T.A., sans oublier les droits des victimes directes et indirectes. On propose une Politique pénitentiaire alternative: préventive et répersonnalisatrice, avec des professionnels totalement nouveaux, de-vers la cosmovision de l’espoir, l’avenir et l’utopie. On introduit certaines références aux grandes religions, germe d’une plus grande profondeur humaine.[EN] From the perspective of a fundamental penitentiary Policy the fraternal utopia of prisons is designed and three immediate innovations are defended: technical and human volunteers, lawyers-criminologists in the service of prisoners, and an international mobilization. From the point of view of an applied penitentiary Policy, the problems about dispersion and approach of the prisoners of the terrorist group E.T.A. are analyzed, not forgetting direct and indirect victims’ rights. An alternative penitentiary Policy is proposed: preventive and repersonalizer, with radicaly new professionals, from-to the cosmovision of the hope, the future and the utopia. Some references to the great religions are made, germ of the greatest human depth

The 2008 extreme outburst of the young eruptive variable star Ex Lupi

In early 2008, the young low-mass star EX Lupi, the prototype of the EXor class of eruptive variables, optically brightened by over five magnitudes for a period of 7 months. The previous time a change of such amplitude had been observed in EX Lup was over 50 years ago. In this Letter we present new optical and near-IR high resolution spectroscopy of EX~Lup during the 2008 outburst. We investigate the physical characteristics of the outburst both soon after it began and some four months later, and consider the energetics and kinematics observed. Emission line strengths, widths, and profiles changed significantly between the two observations. Also, modeling of the 2.2935 um CO overtone bandhead emission suggests that an inner gap in the circumstellar gas disk around the star may be present and it is from the inner edge of the gas disk that the CO overtone emission probably arises. We derive a mass accretion luminosity and rate during the extreme outburst of ~2+-0.5~Lsun and ~2+-0.5x10^-7 Msun yr^-1, respectively, which suggests that this outburst was indeed one of the strongest witnessed in EX Lup, yet not as strong as those observed in FU Orionis stars.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
