    Correlation between layer thickness and periodicity of long polytypes in silicon carbide

    The layer widths and repeat spacing of long-period polytypes (LPPs) have been determined using synchrotron radiation source (SRS) X-ray diffraction topography (XRDT). This method has proved to be a powerful tool in investigating the spatial extent of one-dimensional disorder (1DD), long-period polytypes (LPPs) and the boundaries of polytype layers in silicon carbide (SiC). The resulting neighbourhood coalescence models have confirmed the validity of the sandwich rule even in the limit of two arbitrarily long LPPs, as well as the unique nature of the 6H polytype. A significant empirical trend is reported here that relates the thickness of LPP layers to the periodicity of the repeat stacking sequence measured on the topographs. A good correlation between the data suggests that this behaviour is governed by a simple mathematical expression t = kNn. Values for k and n have been determined that relate the polytype thickness (t in microns) to the number of hexagonal layers (N) in the polytype stacking repeat. These values can be used to prompt questions about the limits of polytypism and disorder in SiC

    Traditional avenues of thinking about and measuring student engagement may privilege traditional students. This article describes attempts to better include and prepare all students for engagement by creating a welcoming environment for diversity, altering methods of grading engagement, and broadening opportunities for grading engagement in a foundation course. Reflections on the experiments suggest some anecdotal success, areas of student resistance, and areas in need of continued revision

    In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, CSB and SJU communication students took over CSB/SJU institutional profiles on Instagram and Vine for six weeks in the spring of 2014. Students in the Communication Department\u27s New Media Applications and Analysis course planned, prepared and shared photos and video for their assigned profile. Groups were responsible for setting goals for their takeover, creating a profile of a target audience and applying lessons learned about effective branding through visual communication.     Multi-walled microchannels: free-standing porous silicon membranes for use in ”TAS

    Electrochemically formed porous silicon (PS) can be released from the bulk silicon substrate by underetching at increased current density. Using this technique, two types of channels containing free-standing layers of PS were constructed, which were failed multi-walled microchannels (MW ”Cs). They can be used in devices like microsieves, microbatteries, and porous electrodes. Two types of MW”C were made: the 'conventional' version, consisting of two or more coaxially constructed microchannels separated by a suspended PS membrane, and the buried variety, where a PS membrane is suspended halfway in an etched cavity surrounded by silicon nitride walls. The latter is more robust. The pore size of the PS was measured using transmission electron microscopy and field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM) and found to be of the order of 7 n

    Unpackaging demand for water service quality : evidence from conjoint surveys in Sri Lanka

    In the early 2000s, the Government of Sri Lanka considered engaging private sector operators to manage water and sewerage services in two separate service areas: one in the town of Negombo (north of Colombo), and one stretching along the coastal strip (south from Colombo) from the towns of Kalutara to Galle. Since then, the government has abandoned the idea of setting up a public-private partnership in these two areas. This paper is part of a series of investigations to determine how these pilot private sector transactions (forming part of the overall water sector reform strategy) could be designed in such a manner that they would benefit the poor. The authors describe the results of a conjoint survey evaluating the factors that drive customer demand for alternative water supply and sanitation services in Sri Lanka. They show how conjoint surveys can be used to unpackage household demand for attributes of urban services and improve the design of infrastructure policies. They present conjoint surveys as a tool for field experiments and a source of valuable empirical data. In the study of three coastal towns in southwestern Sri Lanka the conjoint survey allows the authors to compare household preferences for four water supply attributes-price, quantity, safety, and reliability. They examine subpopulations of different income levels to determine if demand is heterogeneous. The case study suggests that households care about service quality (not just price). In general, the authors find that households have diverse preferences in terms of quantity, safety, and service options, but not with regard to hours of supply.     Improved Bounds on the Phase Transition for the Hard-Core Model in 2-Dimensions

    For the hard-core lattice gas model defined on independent sets weighted by an activity λ\lambda, we study the critical activity λc(Z2)\lambda_c(\mathbb{Z}^2) for the uniqueness/non-uniqueness threshold on the 2-dimensional integer lattice Z2\mathbb{Z}^2. The conjectured value of the critical activity is approximately 3.7963.796. Until recently, the best lower bound followed from algorithmic results of Weitz (2006). Weitz presented an FPTAS for approximating the partition function for graphs of constant maximum degree Δ\Delta when λ<λc(TΔ)\lambda<\lambda_c(\mathbb{T}_\Delta) where TΔ\mathbb{T}_\Delta is the infinite, regular tree of degree Δ\Delta. His result established a certain decay of correlations property called strong spatial mixing (SSM) on Z2\mathbb{Z}^2 by proving that SSM holds on its self-avoiding walk tree Tsawσ(Z2)T_{\mathrm{saw}}^\sigma(\mathbb{Z}^2) where σ=(σv)v∈Z2\sigma=(\sigma_v)_{v\in \mathbb{Z}^2} and σv\sigma_v is an ordering on the neighbors of vertex vv. As a consequence he obtained that λc(Z2)≄λc(T4)=1.675\lambda_c(\mathbb{Z}^2)\geq\lambda_c( \mathbb{T}_4) = 1.675. Restrepo et al. (2011) improved Weitz's approach for the particular case of Z2\mathbb{Z}^2 and obtained that λc(Z2)>2.388\lambda_c(\mathbb{Z}^2)>2.388. In this paper, we establish an upper bound for this approach, by showing that, for all σ\sigma, SSM does not hold on Tsawσ(Z2)T_{\mathrm{saw}}^\sigma(\mathbb{Z}^2) when λ>3.4\lambda>3.4. We also present a refinement of the approach of Restrepo et al. which improves the lower bound to λc(Z2)>2.48\lambda_c(\mathbb{Z}^2)>2.48.Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure.     Supplementary Screening Sonography in Mammographically Dense Breast: Pros and Cons

    Sonography is an attractive supplement to mammography in breast cancer screening because it is relatively inexpensive, requires no contrast-medium injection, is well tolerated by patients, and is widely available for equipment as compared with MRI. Sonography has been especially valuable for women with mammographically dense breast because it has consistently been able to detect a substantial number of cancers at an early stage. Despite these findings, breast sonography has known limitations as a screening tool; operator-dependence, the shortage of skilled operators, the inability to detect microcalcifications, and substantially higher false-positive rates than mammography. Further study of screening sonography is still ongoing and is expected to help establish the role of screening sonography

    At the 2016 All Campus Forum President Hinton called for us to create an ecosystem of inclusion at CSB/SJU. Faculty members\u27 work with students is central to creating such an ecosystem, but what, after all, do we mean by inclusion? In this presentation, FYS and Humanities Mellon cohort members provide an overview of our evolving understanding of inclusive pedagogy, the research that supports it, as well as examples of such pedagogies that we are implementing in our fall 2016 courses
