    A Markov Chain based method for generating long-range dependence

    This paper describes a model for generating time series which exhibit the statistical phenomenon known as long-range dependence (LRD). A Markov Modulated Process based upon an infinite Markov chain is described. The work described is motivated by applications in telecommunications where LRD is a known property of time-series measured on the internet. The process can generate a time series exhibiting LRD with known parameters and is particularly suitable for modelling internet traffic since the time series is in terms of ones and zeros which can be interpreted as data packets and inter-packet gaps.     Anyone Can Become a Troll: Causes of Trolling Behavior in Online Discussions

    In online communities, antisocial behavior such as trolling disrupts constructive discussion. While prior work suggests that trolling behavior is confined to a vocal and antisocial minority, we demonstrate that ordinary people can engage in such behavior as well. We propose two primary trigger mechanisms: the individual's mood, and the surrounding context of a discussion (e.g., exposure to prior trolling behavior). Through an experiment simulating an online discussion, we find that both negative mood and seeing troll posts by others significantly increases the probability of a user trolling, and together double this probability. To support and extend these results, we study how these same mechanisms play out in the wild via a data-driven, longitudinal analysis of a large online news discussion community. This analysis reveals temporal mood effects, and explores long range patterns of repeated exposure to trolling. A predictive model of trolling behavior shows that mood and discussion context together can explain trolling behavior better than an individual's history of trolling. These results combine to suggest that ordinary people can, under the right circumstances, behave like trolls.Comment: Best Paper Award at CSCW 201

    Modeling long-range memory with stationary Markovian processes

    In this paper we give explicit examples of power-law correlated stationary Markovian processes y(t) where the stationary pdf shows tails which are gaussian or exponential. These processes are obtained by simply performing a coordinate transformation of a specific power-law correlated additive process x(t), already known in the literature, whose pdf shows power-law tails 1/x^a. We give analytical and numerical evidence that although the new processes (i) are Markovian and (ii) have gaussian or exponential tails their autocorrelation function still shows a power-law decay =1/T^b where b grows with a with a law which is compatible with b=a/2-c, where c is a numerical constant. When a<2(1+c) the process y(t), although Markovian, is long-range correlated. Our results help in clarifying that even in the context of Markovian processes long-range dependencies are not necessarily associated to the occurrence of extreme events. Moreover, our results can be relevant in the modeling of complex systems with long memory. In fact, we provide simple processes associated to Langevin equations thus showing that long-memory effects can be modeled in the context of continuous time stationary Markovian processes.Comment: 5 figure

    The Potential Role of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations in Infectious Disease Epidemics and Antibiotic Resistance

    The industrialization of livestock production and the widespread use of nontherapeutic antimicrobial growth promotants has intensified the risk for the emergence of new, more virulent, or more resistant microorganisms. These have reduced the effectiveness of several classes of antibiotics for treating infections in humans and livestock. Recent outbreaks of virulent strains of influenza have arisen from swine and poultry raised in close proximity. This working group, which was part of the Conference on Environmental Health Impacts of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations: Anticipating Hazards—Searching for Solutions, considered the state of the science around these issues and concurred with the World Health Organization call for a phasing-out of the use of antimicrobial growth promotants for livestock and fish production. We also agree that all therapeutic antimicrobial agents should be available only by prescription for human and veterinary use. Concern about the risk of an influenza pandemic leads us to recommend that regulations be promulgated to restrict the co-location of swine and poultry concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) on the same site and to set appropriate separation distances

    Transport properties of heterogeneous materials derived from Gaussian random fields: Bounds and Simulation

    We investigate the effective conductivity (σe\sigma_e) of a class of amorphous media defined by the level-cut of a Gaussian random field. The three point solid-solid correlation function is derived and utilised in the evaluation of the Beran-Milton bounds. Simulations are used to calculate σe\sigma_e for a variety of fields and volume fractions at several different conductivity contrasts. Relatively large differences in σe\sigma_e are observed between the Gaussian media and the identical overlapping sphere model used previously as a `model' amorphous medium. In contrast σe\sigma_e shows little variability between different Gaussian media.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure

    Turbulence Time Series Data Hole Filling using Karhunen-Loeve and ARIMA methods

    Measurements of optical turbulence time series data using unattended instruments over long time intervals inevitably lead to data drop-outs or degraded signals. We present a comparison of methods using both Principal Component Analysis, which is also known as the Karhunen--Loeve decomposition, and ARIMA that seek to correct for these event-induced and mechanically-induced signal drop-outs and degradations. We report on the quality of the correction by examining the Intrinsic Mode Functions generated by Empirical Mode Decomposition.     The Strongly Coupled 't Hooft Model on the Lattice

    We study the strong coupling limit of the one-flavor and two-flavor massless 't Hooft models, largeNclarge-{\cal N}_c-color QCD2QCD_2, on a lattice. We use staggered fermions and the Hamiltonian approach to lattice gauge theories. We show that the one-flavor model is effectively described by the antiferromagnetic Ising model, whose ground state is the vacuum of the gauge model in the infinite coupling limit; expanding around this ground state we derive a strong coupling expansion and compute the lowest lying hadron masses as well as the chiral condensate of the gauge theory. Our lattice computation well reproduces the results of the continuum theory. Baryons are massless in the infinite coupling limit; they acquire a mass already at the second order in the strong coupling expansion in agreement with the Witten argument that baryons are the QCDQCD solitons. The spectrum and chiral condensate of the two-flavor model are effectively described in terms of observables of the quantum antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. We explicitly write the lowest lying hadron masses and chiral condensate in terms of spin-spin correlators on the ground state of the spin model. We show that the planar limit (Nc{\cal N}_c\longrightarrow \infty) of the gauge model corresponds to the large spin limit (SS\longrightarrow \infty) of the antiferromagnet and compute the hadron mass spectrum in this limit finding that, also in this model, the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking of the continuum theory is well reproduced on the lattice.Comment: LaTex, 25 pages, no figure

    Quality assurance for the query and distribution systems of the RCSB Protein Data Bank

    The RCSB Protein Data Bank (RCSB PDB, www.pdb.org) is a key online resource for structural biology and related scientific disciplines. The website is used on average by 165 000 unique visitors per month, and more than 2000 other websites link to it. The amount and complexity of PDB data as well as the expectations on its usage are growing rapidly. Therefore, ensuring the reliability and robustness of the RCSB PDB query and distribution systems are crucially important and increasingly challenging. This article describes quality assurance for the RCSB PDB website at several distinct levels, including: (i) hardware redundancy and failover, (ii) testing protocols for weekly database updates, (iii) testing and release procedures for major software updates and (iv) miscellaneous monitoring and troubleshooting tools and practices. As such it provides suggestions for how other websites might be operated
