Anharmonicity and asymmetry of Landau levels for a two-dimensional electron gas
We calculate the density of states of a two dimensional electron gas located
at the interface of a GaAlAs/GaAs heterojunction. The disorder potential which
is generally created by a single doping layer behind a spacer, is here enhanced
by the presence of a second delta doped layer of scatterers which can be
repulsive or attractive impurities. We have calculated the density of states by
means of the Klauder's approximation, in the presence of a magnetic field of
arbitrary strength. At low field either band tails or impurity bands are
observed for attractive potentials, depending on the impurity concentration. At
higher field, impurity bands are observed for both repulsive and attractive
potentials. We discuss the effect of such an asymmetrical density of states on
the transport properties in the quantum Hall effect regime.Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures. submitted to Phys. Rev.
Development of Lumped Element Kinetic Inductance Detectors for NIKA
Lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors(LEKIDs) have recently shown
considerable promise as direct absorption mm-wavelength detectors for
astronomical applications. One major research thrust within the N\'eel Iram
Kids Array (NIKA) collaboration has been to investigate the suitability of
these detectors for deployment at the 30-meter IRAM telescope located on Pico
Veleta in Spain. Compared to microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKID),
using quarter wavelength resonators, the resonant circuit of a LEKID consists
of a discrete inductance and capacitance coupled to a feedline. A high and
constant current density distribution in the inductive part of these resonators
makes them very sensitive. Due to only one metal layer on a silicon substrate,
the fabrication is relatively easy. In order to optimize the LEKIDs for this
application, we have recently probed a wide variety of individual resonator and
array parameters through simulation and physical testing. This included
determining the optimal feed-line coupling, pixel geometry, resonator
distribution within an array (in order to minimize pixel cross-talk), and
resonator frequency spacing. Based on these results, a 144-pixel Aluminum array
was fabricated and tested in a dilution fridge with optical access, yielding an
average optical NEP of ~2E-16 W/Hz^1/2 (best pixels showed NEP = 6E-17 W/Hz^1/2
under 4-8 pW loading per pixel). In October 2010 the second prototype of LEKIDs
has been tested at the IRAM 30 m telescope. A new LEKID geometry for 2
polarizations will be presented. Also first optical measurements of a titanium
nitride array will be discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 12 figures; ISSTT 2011 Worksho
Lopsidedness of cluster galaxies in modified gravity
We point out an interesting theoretical prediction for elliptical galaxies
residing inside galaxy clusters in the framework of modified Newtonian dynamics
(MOND), that could be used to test this paradigm. Apart from the central
brightest cluster galaxy, other galaxies close enough to the centre experience
a strong gravitational influence from the other galaxies of the cluster. This
influence manifests itself only as tides in standard Newtonian gravity, meaning
that the systematic acceleration of the centre of mass of the galaxy has no
consequence. However, in the context of MOND, a consequence of the breaking of
the strong equivalence principle is that the systematic acceleration changes
the own self-gravity of the galaxy. We show here that, in this framework,
initially axisymmetric elliptical galaxies become lopsided along the external
field's direction, and that the centroid of the galaxy, defined by the outer
density contours, is shifted by a few hundreds parsecs with respect to the
densest point.Comment: accepted for publication in JCA
First Results of the EDELWEISS WIMP Search using a 320 g Heat-and-Ionization Ge Detector
The EDELWEISS collaboration has performed a direct search for WIMP dark
matter using a 320 g heat-and-ionization cryogenic Ge detector operated in a
low-background environment in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane. No nuclear
recoils are observed in the fiducial volume in the 30-200 keV energy range
during an effective exposure of 4.53 kg.days. Limits for the cross-section for
the spin-independent interaction of WIMPs and nucleons are set in the framework
of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The central value of the
signal reported by the experiment DAMA is excluded at 90% CL.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, 4 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
The EDELWEISS Experiment : Status and Outlook
The EDELWEISS Dark Matter search uses low-temperature Ge detectors with heat
and ionisation read- out to identify nuclear recoils induced by elastic
collisions with WIMPs from the galactic halo. Results from the operation of 70
g and 320 g Ge detectors in the low-background environment of the Modane
Underground Laboratory (LSM) are presented.Comment: International Conference on Dark Matter in Astro and Particle Physics

Universal Fluctuation of the Hall Conductance in the Random Magnetic Field
We show that the RMS fluctuation of the antisymmetric part of the Hall
conductance of a planar mesoscopic metal in a random magnetic field with zero
average is universal, of the order of , independent of the amplitude of
the random magnetic field and the diffusion coefficient even in the weak field
limit. This quantity is exactly zero in the case of ordinary scalar disorder.
We propose an experiment to measure this surprising effect, and also discuss
its implications on the localization physics of this system. Our result applies
to some other systems with broken time-reversal ({\bf T}) symmetry.Comment: 4 pages, Revtex 3.0; added the paragraph regarding applicability to

Calibration and First light of the Diabolo photometer at the Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory
We have designed and built a large-throughput dual channel photometer,
Diabolo. This photometer is dedicated to the observation of millimetre
continuum diffuse sources, and in particular, of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect
and of anisotropies of the 3K background. We describe the optical layout and
filtering system of the instrument, which uses two bolometric detectors for
simultaneous observations in two frequency channels at 1.2 and 2.1 mm. The
bolometers are cooled to a working temperature of 0.1 K provided by a compact
dilution cryostat. The photometric and angular responses of the instrument are
measured in the laboratory. First astronomical light was detected in March 1995
at the focus of the new Millimetre and Infrared Testa Grigia Observatory (MITO)
Telescope. The established sensitivity of the system is of 7 mK_RJ s^1/2$. For
a typical map of at least 10 beams, with one hour of integration per beam, one
can achieve the rms values of y_SZ ~ 7 10^-5 and the 3K background anisotropy
Delta T/T ~ 7 10^-5, in winter conditions. We also report on a novel bolometer
AC readout circuit which allows for the first time total power measurements on
the sky. This technique alleviates (but does not forbid) the use of chopping
with a secondary mirror. This technique and the dilution fridge concept will be
used in future scan--modulated space instrument like the ESA Planck mission
project.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy

Dark Matter Search in the Edelweiss Experiment
Preliminary results obtained with 320g bolometers with simultaneous
ionization and heat measurements are described. After a few weeks of data
taking, data accumulated with one of these detectors are beginning to exclude
the upper part of the DAMA region. Prospects for the present run and the second
stage of the experiment, EDELWEISS-II, using an innovative reversed cryostat
allowing data taking with 100 detectors, are briefly described.Comment: IDM 2000, 3rd International Workshop on the Identification of Dark

Test beam measurement of the first prototype of the fast silicon pixel monolithic detector for the TT-PET project
The TT-PET collaboration is developing a PET scanner for small animals with
30 ps time-of-flight resolution and sub-millimetre 3D detection granularity.
The sensitive element of the scanner is a monolithic silicon pixel detector
based on state-of-the-art SiGe BiCMOS technology. The first ASIC prototype for
the TT-PET was produced and tested in the laboratory and with minimum ionizing
particles. The electronics exhibit an equivalent noise charge below 600 e- RMS
and a pulse rise time of less than 2 ns, in accordance with the simulations.
The pixels with a capacitance of 0.8 pF were measured to have a detection
efficiency greater than 99% and, although in the absence of the
post-processing, a time resolution of approximately 200 ps
