CONVERSION OF A LAMB PRODUCTION SYSTEM TO ORGANIC FARMING: HOW TO MANAGE, FOR WHICH RESULTS?

Two sheep flocks were managed organically (for two years from conversion onwards) under different lambing strategies (1 lambing/year vs. 3 lambings every two years). The second system was tested as there was a producer’s interest in high productivity that is a guarantee of good economic results in conventional. Reproduction, feeding, lamb production, carcass quality, health (particularly internal parasitism), economic return of the flock, grass production, and pasture biodiversity were evaluated. The lambs were bred under low therapeutic input. The economical advantage of increasing lambing frequency was not demonstrated, whereas this strategy complexified management and resulted in higher internal parasitic infection of the lambs, and finally showed a lower stability. There were difficulties in establishing a very high feed self-sufficiency in both systems, especially the more intensive system (4 points lower), due to harsh climatic conditions; following this five-year experiment, we are changing our strategy to provide nitrogen in the systems

Multiple Comparative Metagenomics using Multiset k-mer Counting

Background. Large scale metagenomic projects aim to extract biodiversity knowledge between different environmental conditions. Current methods for comparing microbial communities face important limitations. Those based on taxonomical or functional assignation rely on a small subset of the sequences that can be associated to known organisms. On the other hand, de novo methods, that compare the whole sets of sequences, either do not scale up on ambitious metagenomic projects or do not provide precise and exhaustive results. Methods. These limitations motivated the development of a new de novo metagenomic comparative method, called Simka. This method computes a large collection of standard ecological distances by replacing species counts by k-mer counts. Simka scales-up today's metagenomic projects thanks to a new parallel k-mer counting strategy on multiple datasets. Results. Experiments on public Human Microbiome Project datasets demonstrate that Simka captures the essential underlying biological structure. Simka was able to compute in a few hours both qualitative and quantitative ecological distances on hundreds of metagenomic samples (690 samples, 32 billions of reads). We also demonstrate that analyzing metagenomes at the k-mer level is highly correlated with extremely precise de novo comparison techniques which rely on all-versus-all sequences alignment strategy or which are based on taxonomic profiling

Il y a la Mort qui parcourt le monde, sabots aux pieds, en accomplissant elle-même sa nécessaire besogne et celle qui confie à l’Ankou, son serviteur, la tâche de transporter l’âme des morts dans sa charrette. Entre ces deux histoires, il existe tout un monde réel, quotidien, beau ou laid, peuplé de personnages qui ont pour caractéristique commune d’être… mortels. J’ai tenté, à travers mes écrits, de présenter ces gens que la mort frôle, guette ou, parfois, évite. L’essai qui accompagne ma création cherche à réfléchir à la difficile question d’écrire sur cette ultime inconnue qu’est la mort – celle qu’on ne regarde toujours qu’avec des yeux vivants. Parallèlement à mes propres histoires, je tente d’observer la présence de la mort chez Jules Supervielle et Roch Carrier, deux auteurs qui la mettent en scène dans leurs contes, mais de façon subtile, presque en filigrane. C’est cette manière d’écrire que je cherche à mettre en lumière dans la portion réflexive de ce mémoire.In the beginning, we find Death walking around the world, completing her unappreciated task by herself. By the end, she has the help of her servant on Earth, the one the Bretons call l’Ankou. Between these two stories, there is a whole world – trivial, beautiful or ugly, but real – inhabited by people whose main similarity is that they can, and one day will, die. I have tried to write short stories that explore the lives of these people who Death observes, touches or even, sometimes, forgets. The essay that accompanies my creation attempts to address the challenges awaiting someone who wants to write about death, which we always look at with living eyes. Along with discussing my own stories, I also study death’s subtle presence in the work of Jules Supervielle and Roch Carrier. It is their way of writing that I seek to examine in the reflective portion of my project

La réflexion critique de ce mémoire se veut une étude approfondie des thématiques communes au mythe d'Orphée et Eurydice ainsi qu'au roman Prochain épisode d'Hubert Aquin. C'est la puissance du langage poétique d'Aquin qui nous permet d'établir des liens entre mythe et roman, puis la présence de thèmes tels que la mort, le doute, l'amour et la musique, le regard en arrière, la figure du double, le pays perdu et la révolution. La section création regroupe quarante-huit poèmes. Elle est née et s'est nourrie d'une expérience humaine infernale et extraordinaire, rapportée dans le mythe d'Orphée et le roman d'Aquin, soit le processus de mort, de métamorphose et de renaissance

The nitrate transporter family protein LjNPF8.6 controls the N-fixing nodule activity

N-fixing nodules are new organs formed on legume roots as a result of the beneficial interaction with soil bacteria, rhizobia. The nodule functioning is still a poorly characterized step of the symbiotic interaction, as only a few of the genes induced in N-fixing nodules have been functionally characterized. We present here the characterization of a member of the Lotus japonicus nitrate transporter1/peptide transporter family, LjNPF8.6. The phenotypic characterization carried out in independent L. japonicus LORE1 insertion lines indicates a positive role of LjNPF8.6 on nodule functioning, as knockout mutants display N-fixation deficiency (25%) and increased nodular superoxide content. The partially compromised nodule functioning induces two striking phenotypes: anthocyanin accumulation already displayed 4 weeks after inoculation and shoot biomass deficiency, which is detected by long-term phenotyping. LjNPF8.6 achieves nitrate uptake in Xenopus laevis oocytes at both 0.5 and 30 mm external concentrations, and a possible role as a nitrate transporter in the control of N-fixing nodule activity is discussed

Multispecies cross-diffusions: from a nonlocal mean-field to a porous medium system without self-diffusion

Systems describing the long-range interaction between individuals have attracted a lot of attention in the last years, in particular in relation with living systems. These systems are quadratic, written under the form of transport equations with a nonlocal self-generated drift. We establish the localisation limit, that is the convergence of nonlocal to local systems, when the range of interaction tends to 0. These theoretical results are sustained by numerical simulations. The major new feature in our analysis is that we do not need diffusion to gain compactness, at odd with the existing literature. The central compactness result is provided by a full rank assumption on the interaction kernels. In turn, we prove existence of weak solutions for the resulting system, a cross-diffusion system of quadratic type

Cet article se donne pour objet l’étude de la crise existentielle vécue par la minorité juive en Allemagne dans le premier tiers de XXe siècle telle qu’elle a été interprétée par Jakob Wassermann. Né dans la communauté de Furth en Bavière, de mère et de père juifs, Jakob Wassermann s’est d’emblée placé dans une situation délicate, refusant tout à la fois l’assimilation – vécue comme une négation des origines – et le sionisme – qu’il ne comprend pas. Je voudrais montrer comment à travers neuf romans d’actualité, Jakob Wassermann tente d’analyser les conflits intérieurs des Juifs allemands face à leur situation, leur tentative d’échapper à l’isolement auquel semble les condamner une société allemande hostile.In diesem Artikel möchte ich die Lebenskrise der jüdischen Minderheit in Deutschland im ersten Drittel des XX. Jahrhunderts studieren, so wie sie von Jakob Wassermann in seinen Romanen dargestellt wurde. In der jüdischen Gemeinde von Fürth in Bayern geboren, befand sich Jakob Wassermann von Anfang an in einem schwierigen Zwiespalt : er lehnte gleichzeitig die Assimilation – die er als Negierung seiner Herkunft empfand – und den Zionismus ab – der ihm fremd blieb. Cet article tente de témoigner des tâtonnements et des avancées du jeune Klaus Mann écrivain. Pour ce faire, j’essaierai de développer les traits dominants qui parcourent ses écrits de jeunesse, en montrant notamment la place centrale occupée par la figure paternelle mais aussi l’aspect précurseur du tableau brossé de la République de Weimar. Finalement, je montrerai l’émergence d’une pensée politique, l’engagement politique chez un jeune homme qui, avec l’émigration et le combat antifasciste, deviendra une grande figure morale et militante de l’Allemagne anti-hitlérienne.Der folgende Artikel möchte dem Weg des frühen Klaus Mann von einem bohemehaften Schriftsteller zu einem politisch engagierten Gegner von Hitler-Deutschland nachgehen. Es sollen die Hauptcharakteristiken der frühen Schriften aufgezeichnet werden, man denke an die zentrale Bedeutung der väterlichen Figur oder an die Darstellung der dekadenten Weimarer Republik. Nicht zuletzt soll die politische Entfaltung eines jungen Mannes untersucht werden, welcher zu einem der wichtigsten Vertreter der Emigration und des antifaschistischen Kampfes wurde

Réécriture et déconstruction – Ein weites Feld de Günter Grass

Ein weites Feld est un livre aux multiples facettes, qui parle de la chute du mur de Berlin et de l’unification allemande de 1989/1990, de la vie et de l’œuvre de Fontane, de 150 ans d’histoire allemande – tout à la fois roman d’actualité, biographie et roman historique. Dès le titre, Grass annonce le caractère intertextuel de son roman, le jeu intertextuel apparaissant ainsi comme l’enjeu majeur de la narration. Après avoir analysé le jeu intertextuel auquel Günter Grass se livre, on cherchera à comprendre en quoi le recours massif à l’intertextualité sert le propos de Grass. Mais s’arrêter à ces questions techniques ferait de Ein weites Feld un vaste champ de citations ou d’allusions. Il faudra au contraire s’interroger sur la notion même d’intertextualité et sur ce que l’on pourrait désigner ici comme un travail de déconstruction de l’intertextualité.Ein weites Feld ist ein schillernder Roman, der vom Fall der Berliner Mauer und der Wiedervereinigung 1989/1990, von Theodor Fontanes Leben und Werk, von 150 Jahren deutscher Geschichte handelt – er ist zugleich ein Zeitroman, eine Biographie und ein historischer Roman. Gleich im Titel wird der Leser mit Grass’ Spiel mit der Intertextualität konfrontiert. Der vorliegende Artikel macht es sich zur Aufgabe, auf das intertextuelle Spiel und dessen Funktion im Roman einzugehen. Doch sollte man Ein weites Feld nicht allzu schnell als langweiliges bzw. anstrengendes Feld von Zitaten und Anspielungen abtun. Im Roman wird der Begriff der Intertextualität selbst hinterfragt, was ich hier als Dekonstruktion der Intertextualität aufzufassen versucht habe
