Fourier series solution to the heat conduction equation with an internal heat source linearly dependent on temperature: Application to chilling of fruit and vegetables

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a separation of variables solution to the equation for heat transfer by conduction in simply-shaped, homogeneous and isotropic bodies subjected to cooling or heating processes without a phase change and with an internal heat source that is a linear function of temperature and subject to homogeneous external conditions of the third kind. The solution is given by the sum of an infinite Fourier series. Starting from this solution, the paper also proposes a simple calculation of chilling time based on an approximation to the first term of that solution (exponential zone); it further proposes a first approximation to the maximum value attained by the temperature history, and to the corresponding time. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Robust symmetric multiplication for programmable analog VLSI array processing

    Get PDF
This paper presents an electrically programmable analog multiplier. The circuit performs the multiplication between an input variable and an electrically selectable scaling factor. The multiplier is divided in several blocks: a linearized transconductor, binary weighted current mirrors and a differential to single-ended current adder. This paper shows the advantages introduced using a linearized OTA-based multiplier. The circuit presented renders higher linearity and symmetry in the output current than a previously reported single-transistor multiplier. Its inclusion in an array processor based on CNN allows for a more accurate implementation of the processing model and a more robust weight distribution scheme than those found in previous designs.Office of Naval Research (USA) N-00014- 02-1-0884Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC2003-09817-C02-0

A Focal-Plane Image Processor for Low Power Adaptive Capture and Analysis of the Visual Stimulus

    Get PDF
Portable applications of artificial vision are limited by the fact that conventional processing schemes fail to meet the specifications under a tight power budget. A bio-inspired approach, based in the goal-directed organization of sensory organs found in nature, has been employed to implement a focal-plane image processor for low power vision applications. The prototype contains a multi-layered CNN structure concurrent with 32times32 photosensors with locally programmable integration time for adaptive image capture with on-chip local and global adaptation mechanisms. A more robust and linear multiplier block has been employed to reduce irregular analog wave propagation ought to asymmetric synapses. The predicted computing power per power consumption, 142MOPS/mW, is orders of magnitude above what rendered by conventional architectures

AbstractThis paper deals with the chaotic behavior of the solutions of a mixed problem for the one-dimensional wave equation with a quadratic boundary condition. This behavior is studied through the connection between the energy function and quadratic discrete dynamical systems

Overexpression of the sodium ATPase of Saccharomyces cerevisiae: conditions for phosphorylation from ATP and Pi

AbstractThe ENA1 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes a putative ATPase necessary for Na+ efflux. Plasma membranes and intracellular membranes of a yeast strain overexpressing the ENA1 gene contain significant amounts of ENA1 protein. Consequences of the overexpression with reference to the wild-type strain are: (1) a 5-fold higher content of the ENA1-protein in plasma membranes; (2) lower Na+ and Li+ effluxes; (3) slightly higher Na+ tolerance; and (4) much higher Li+ tolerance. The ENA1-specific ATPase activity in plasma membrane preparations of the overexpressing strain was low, but an ENA1 phosphoprotein was clearly detected when the plasma membranes were exposed to ATP in the presence of Na+ or to Pi in the absence of Na+. The characteristics of this phosphoprotein, which correspond to the acyl phosphate intermediaries of P-type ATPases, the absolute requirement of Na+ or other alkali cations for phosphorylation, and the Na+ and pH dependence of phosphorylation from ATP and Pi suggest that the product of the ENA1 gene may be a Na,H-ATPase, which can also pump other alkali cations. The role of the intracellular membranes structures produced with the overexpression of ENA1 in Na+ and Li+ tolerances and the existence of a β-subunit of the ENA1 ATPase are discussed
