Fra risanamento religioso e rafforzamiento della razza: il processo di costruzione della memoria dell'immigrazione italiana nel sud del Brasile negli anni 1920

The concept of history is crossed by two realities: past events and the narrative of experiences of the human past. More than a reality concreteness, come to us from the past signals that are processed and presented today as representations of the passeité. In the specific case of Italian immigration in southern Brazil, the year 1925 is characterized by a great process of celebration of the Italianity 'the 50th anniversary of the Italians arrival' and a consequent re-interpretation of the dynamics that marked the first Italic settlements in southern Brazil. In an interpretative key that put together fascist policy, political project of the Riograndense Republican Party and social climbing of the colonial elite, the immigration process (or rather civilizing process) is described with a particular emphasis on the idea of a successful experience, wherein the pioneers brought prosperity and sound morality to the southern Brazil borders. The Album of the fiftieth anniversary of the Italian colonization in Rio Grande do Sul has become the main space in the production of memories about the Peninsular immigration process and the starting point of mnemonic interpretations produced in other times of ethnic celebration. The representations of the good Catholic and strong race are ideas-images greatly developed in the memorial narrative of the 50 years of the immigration and became an emblem of Italian identity in Brazilian pampas

Medo, intolerância, resignação: algumas leituras sobre a imigração contemporânea na Itália

Several studies have shown how fear and anxiety are emotions that have marked contemporary society, with new and old triggers of these feelings affecting subjects in today’s world. The other, otherness, has been an object of concern, fear, in various human collectivities over time. With regard to migratory processes, we notice how this fear of what is different has constructed stereotypes, walls, intolerance, feelings that are often hidden in the idea of ​​‘integration,’ i.e. in the search to annul what characterizes the other, within the host society. On the other hand, in the migrant person, the search for ‘integration’ can show – differently – a resignation that marks an effort to gain acceptance and recognition. This article aims to analyze – relying on the oral history methodology – the phenomenon of contemporary immigration in Italy, with an emphasis on people from Latin America, seeking to grasp the resources used by these individuals to be ‘approved’ in the context of the land of arrival. Thus, the break of a chain of distrust, built as a consequence of a socially shared fear, would enable an inclusion process, i.e. the insertion of the other in the host community, with no need to divest from oneself. Keywords: Latin American migration; contemporary Italy; sensibility; memory; social inclusion.Diversos estudos têm mostrado como o medo e a ansiedade são emoções que têm marcado a sociedade contemporânea, com novos e velhos detonadores desses sentimentos os sujeitos no mundo atual. O outro, a alteridade, tem sido no tempo objeto de preocupação, de medo, nas diferentes coletividades humanas. No que tange aos processos migratórios, observa-se como esse temor em relação ao diverso tem construído estereótipos, muros, intolerância, sentimentos que muitas vezes se escondem na ideia de “integração”, ou seja, na busca de anular aquilo que é característico do outro, ao interno da sociedade de acolhida. Por outro lado, no sujeito migrante, a busca de “integração” pode mostrar – diferentemente – a resignação que marca o esforço para obter aceitação e reconhecimento. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar – a partir da metodologia da história oral – o fenômeno da imigração contemporânea na Itália, com ênfase nos sujeitos provenientes da América Latina, procurando entender os recursos utilizados por esses indivíduos para serem “aprovados” no contexto da terra de chegada. Nesse sentido, a ruptura de uma corrente de desconfiança, construída como consequência de um medo compartilhado socialmente, permitiria um processo de inclusão, ou seja, de inserção do outro na comunidade de acolhida, sem a necessidade de despojar-se de si. “Le madri d’Italia”: um retrato da participação feminina nas comemorações dos Cinquenta anos da imigração italiana (Rio Grande do Sul, 1925)

The celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Italian immigration in Rio Grande do Sul, in 1925, were an important moment in the memory building of the migration phenomenon. The article aims to analyze the content of the representation madri d’Italia found in the celebrations’ book and to understand what the expectations of women’s public action in the Italian ethnic community were. The photographs are a privileged source to understand in depth the twofold conception of the migrant women model.As comemorações do cinquentenário da imigração italiana no Rio Grande do Sul, em 1925, constituíram um momento importante de construção da memória do fenômeno migratório. O artigo quer analisar o conteúdo da representação de madri d’Italia presente no álbum e entender quais eram as expectativas de atuação pública das mulheres na comunidade étnica italiana. Procura-se uma identidade: análise de um percurso de reconhecimento

A new increase in the human migration phenomenon has been observed in recent decades. However, the directions and routes of this process have been greatly modified. The European continent, a historical source of migrants, has become since the 1980s a favourite area for immigrants. As a result, the continued diffusion of news by the mass media on the arrival of Africans, Asians and Latin Americans has produced an image of invasion by foreigners in the European public opinion. In this adverse context, foreign newcomers have faced the difficult task of rebuilding their identities amidst the dynamics of integration and loss of bonds with their original homeland. Different responses to this process have exposed the plurality of visions held by the migrants on their new land and their relations with the host societies. We sought to understand this plurality departing from the narrative of a Brazilian woman living in Italy. We based our analysis on her perceptions about the daily dilemmas experienced by people who have decided to live permanently abroad, and which are the most common chosen paths adopted to gain recognition and to build hybrid social identities
