Effective Operator Treatment of the Anharmonic Oscillator
We analyse the one dimensional quartic oscillator using the effective
operator methodology of Lee and Suzuki. We reproduce known results for low

Bounding biomass in the Fisher equation
The FKPP equation with a variable growth rate and advection by an
incompressible velocity field is considered as a model for plankton dispersed
by ocean currents. If the average growth rate is negative then the model has a
survival-extinction transition; the location of this transition in the
parameter space is constrained using variational arguments and delimited by
simulations. The statistical steady state reached when the system is in the
survival region of parameter space is characterized by integral constraints and
upper and lower bounds on the biomass and productivity that follow from
variational arguments and direct inequalities. In the limit of
zero-decorrelation time the velocity field is shown to act as Fickian diffusion
with an eddy diffusivity much larger than the molecular diffusivity and this
allows a one-dimensional model to predict the biomass, productivity and
extinction transitions. All results are illustrated with a simple growth and

Using binary stars to bound the mass of the graviton
Interacting white dwarf binary star systems, including helium cataclysmic
variable (HeCV) systems, are expected to be strong sources of gravitational
radiation, and should be detectable by proposed space-based laser
interferometer gravitational wave observatories such as LISA. Several HeCV star
systems are presently known and can be studied optically, which will allow
electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations to be correlated.
Comparisons of the phases of a gravitational wave signal and the orbital light
curve from an interacting binary white dwarf star system can be used to bound
the mass of the graviton. Observations of typical HeCV systems by LISA could
potentially yield an upper bound on the inverse mass of the graviton as strong
as km (
eV), more than two orders of magnitude better than present solar system derived

Progress in Interferometry for LISA at JPL
Recent advances at JPL in experimentation and design for LISA interferometry
include the demonstration of Time Delay Interferometry using electronically
separated end stations, a new arm-locking design with improved gain and

Pattern and Outcome of Chest Injuries at Bugando Medical Centre in Northwestern Tanzania.
Chest injuries constitute a continuing challenge to the trauma or general surgeon practicing in developing countries. This study was conducted to outline the etiological spectrum, injury patterns and short term outcome of these injuries in our setting. This was a prospective study involving chest injury patients admitted to Bugando Medical Centre over a six-month period from November 2009 to April 2010 inclusive. A total of 150 chest injury patients were studied. Males outnumbered females by a ratio of 3.8:1. Their ages ranged from 1 to 80 years (mean = 32.17 years). The majority of patients (72.7%) sustained blunt injuries. Road traffic crush was the most common cause of injuries affecting 50.7% of patients. Chest wall wounds, hemothorax and rib fractures were the most common type of injuries accounting for 30.0%, 21.3% and 20.7% respectively. Associated injuries were noted in 56.0% of patients and head/neck (33.3%) and musculoskeletal regions (26.7%) were commonly affected. The majority of patients (55.3%) were treated successfully with non-operative approach. Underwater seal drainage was performed in 39 patients (19.3%). One patient (0.7%) underwent thoracotomy due to hemopericardium. Thirty nine patients (26.0%) had complications of which wound sepsis (14.7%) and complications of long bone fractures (12.0%) were the most common complications. The mean LOS was 13.17 days and mortality rate was 3.3%. Using multivariate logistic regression analysis, associated injuries, the type of injury, trauma scores (ISS, RTS and PTS) were found to be significant predictors of the LOS (P < 0.001), whereas mortality was significantly associated with pre-morbid illness, associated injuries, trauma scores (ISS, RTS and PTS), the need for ICU admission and the presence of complications (P < 0.001). Chest injuries resulting from RTCs remain a major public health problem in this part of Tanzania. Urgent preventive measures targeting at reducing the occurrence of RTCs is necessary to reduce the incidence of chest injuries in this region

Functional Evolution of cis-Regulatory Modules at a Homeotic Gene in Drosophila
It is a long-held belief in evolutionary biology that the rate of molecular evolution for a given DNA sequence is inversely related to the level of functional constraint. This belief holds true for the protein-coding homeotic (Hox) genes originally discovered in Drosophila melanogaster. Expression of the Hox genes in Drosophila embryos is essential for body patterning and is controlled by an extensive array of cis-regulatory modules (CRMs). How the regulatory modules functionally evolve in different species is not clear. A comparison of the CRMs for the Abdominal-B gene from different Drosophila species reveals relatively low levels of overall sequence conservation. However, embryonic enhancer CRMs from other Drosophila species direct transgenic reporter gene expression in the same spatial and temporal patterns during development as their D. melanogaster orthologs. Bioinformatic analysis reveals the presence of short conserved sequences within defined CRMs, representing gap and pair-rule transcription factor binding sites. One predicted binding site for the gap transcription factor KRUPPEL in the IAB5 CRM was found to be altered in Superabdominal (Sab) mutations. In Sab mutant flies, the third abdominal segment is transformed into a copy of the fifth abdominal segment. A model for KRUPPEL-mediated repression at this binding site is presented. These findings challenge our current understanding of the relationship between sequence evolution at the molecular level and functional activity of a CRM. While the overall sequence conservation at Drosophila CRMs is not distinctive from neighboring genomic regions, functionally critical transcription factor binding sites within embryonic enhancer CRMs are highly conserved. These results have implications for understanding mechanisms of gene expression during embryonic development, enhancer function, and the molecular evolution of eukaryotic regulatory modules
Control of intestinal stem cell function and proliferation by mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism.
Most differentiated cells convert glucose to pyruvate in the cytosol through glycolysis, followed by pyruvate oxidation in the mitochondria. These processes are linked by the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC), which is required for efficient mitochondrial pyruvate uptake. In contrast, proliferative cells, including many cancer and stem cells, perform glycolysis robustly but limit fractional mitochondrial pyruvate oxidation. We sought to understand the role this transition from glycolysis to pyruvate oxidation plays in stem cell maintenance and differentiation. Loss of the MPC in Lgr5-EGFP-positive stem cells, or treatment of intestinal organoids with an MPC inhibitor, increases proliferation and expands the stem cell compartment. Similarly, genetic deletion of the MPC in Drosophila intestinal stem cells also increases proliferation, whereas MPC overexpression suppresses stem cell proliferation. These data demonstrate that limiting mitochondrial pyruvate metabolism is necessary and sufficient to maintain the proliferation of intestinal stem cells
STAAR: a randomised controlled trial of electronic adherence monitoring with reminder alarms and feedback to improve clinical outcomes for children with asthma
Background Suboptimal adherence to inhaled steroids
is common in children with asthma and is associated
with poor disease control, reduced quality of life and
even death. Previous studies using feedback of
electronically monitored adherence data have
demonstrated improved adherence, but have not
demonstrated a significant impact on clinical outcomes.
The aim of this study was to determine whether
introduction of this approach into routine practice would
result in improved clinical outcomes.
Methods Children with asthma aged 6–16 years were
randomised to the active intervention consisting of
electronic adherence monitoring with daily reminder
alarms together with feedback in the clinic regarding
their inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) use or to the usual care
arm with adherence monitoring alone. All children had
poorly controlled asthma at baseline, taking ICS and
long-acting β-agonists. Subjects were seen in routine
clinics every 3 months for 1 year. The primary outcome
was the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) score.
Secondary outcomes included adherence and markers of
asthma morbidity.
Results 77 of 90 children completed the study
(39 interventions, 38 controls). Adherence in the
intervention group was 70% vs 49% in the control
group (p≤0.001). There was no significant difference in
the change in ACQ, but children in the intervention
group required significantly fewer courses of oral
steroids (p=0.008) and fewer hospital admissions
(p≤0.001).
Conclusions The results indicate that electronic
adherence monitoring with feedback is likely to be of
significant benefit in the routine management of poorly
controlled asthmatic subjects
TOI-5375 B: A Very Low Mass Star at the Hydrogen-Burning Limit Orbiting an Early M-type Star
The TESS mission detected a companion orbiting TIC 71268730, categorized it
as a planet candidate, and designated the system TOI-5375. Our follow-up
analysis using radial velocity data from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder
(HPF), photometric data from Red Buttes Observatory (RBO), and speckle imaging
with NN-EXPLORE Exoplanet Stellar Speckle Imager (NESSI) determined that the
companion is a very low mass star (VLMS) near the hydrogen-burning mass limit
with a mass of 0.080\pm{0.002} M_{\Sun} (), a radius of
0.1114^{+0.0048}_{-0.0050} R_{\Sun} (1.0841), and
brightness temperature of K. This object orbits with a period of
1.721553 days around an early M dwarf star
(0.62\pm{0.016}M_{\Sun}). TESS photometry shows regular variations in the
host star's TESS light curve, which we interpreted as activity-induced
variation of 2\%, and used this variability to measure the host star's
stellar rotation period of 1.9716 days. The TOI-5375
system provides tight constraints on stellar models of low-mass stars at the
