    Low-temperature rate constants for rotational excitation and de-excitation of C3 (X 1∑g +) by collisions with He (1S)

    The low-temperature rotational (de-) excitation of C3 (X 1∑g 1) by collisions with He (1S) is studied using an ab initio potential energy surface (PES). This PES has been calculated using the single- and double-excitation coupled-cluster approach with noniterative perturbational treatment of triple excitations [CCSD(T)] and the augmented correlation-consistent triple-ζ basis set (aug-cc-pVTZ) with bond functions. This PES is then incorporated in full close-coupling quantum scattering calculations for collision energies between 0.1 and 50 cm -1 in order to deduce the rate constants for rotational levels of C3 up to j = 10, covering the temperature range 5-15 K. © 2008.     Birefringence in nonlinear anisotropic dielectric media

    Light propagation is investigated in the context of local anisotropic nonlinear dielectric media at rest with the dielectric coefficients ϵμν=ϵμν(E,B)\epsilon^\mu{}_\nu = \epsilon^\mu{}_\nu (\vec{E},\vec{B}) and constant μ\mu, in the limit of geometrical optics. Birefringence was examined and the general conditions for its occurrence were presented. A toy model is exhibited, in which uniaxial birefringent media with nonlinear dielectric properties could be driven by external fields in such way that birefringence may be artificially controlled.     Hypothesis about : cleavage furrow-pressure differences determine cleavage furrow position

    Cleavage furrow forming and position in animal cells is highly dependent on the position of mitotic spindle as is shown by many studies. There is evidence that external pressure has an important role in defining the position of mitotic spindle which determines the axis of division. It is being hypothesised that the extracellular pressure which compresses the divided cell membrane has a pivotal role in formation of cleavage furrow and determining its position. It is likely this due to the pressure difference between the inside and outside the cell created during anaphase as a result of precise highly ordered cellular processes. As a result of this difference, the resulting force will compreess the middle of the cell membrane from the outside, causing polarization of actin units and cytokinesis

    Second order averaging for the nonlinear Schroedinger equation with strongly anisotropic potential

    International audienceWe consider the three dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) describing a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) which is highly confi ned in vertical z direction. The highly confi ned potential induces high oscillations in time. If the confi nement in the z direction is a harmonic trap (which is widely used in physical experiments), the very special structure of the spectrum of the confi nement operator will imply that the oscillations are periodic in time. Based on this observation, it can be proved that the GPE can be averaged out with an error of order of epsilon, which is the typical period of the oscillations. In this article, we construct a more accurate averaged model, which approximates the GPE up to errors of order epsilon squared. Then, expansions of this model over the eigenfunctions (modes) of the vertical Hamiltonian Hz are given in convenience of numerical application. Effi cient numerical methods are constructed for solving the GPE with cylindrical symmetry in 3D and the approximation model with radial symmetry in 2D, and numerical results are presented for various kinds of initial data

    International audienceData Warehouses and OLAP (On Line Analytical Processing) technologies are dedicated to analyzing structured data issued from organizations' OLTP (On Line Transaction Processing) systems. Furthermore, in order to enhance their decision support systems, these organizations need to explore XML (eXtensible Markup Language) documents as an additional and important source of unstructured data. In this context, this paper addresses the warehousing of document-centric XML documents. More specifically, we propose a two-method approach to build Document Warehouse conceptual schemas. The first method is for the unification of XML document structures; it aims to elaborate a global and generic view for a set of XML documents belonging to the same domain. The second method is for designing multidimensional galaxy schemas for Document Warehouses

    The rotational excitation of HCN and HNC by He: New insights on the HCN/HNC abundance ratio in molecular clouds

    Modeling of molecular emission from interstellar clouds requires the calculation of rates for excitation by collisions with the most abundant species. The present paper focuses on the calculation of rate coefficients for rotational excitation of the HCN and HNC molecules in their ground vibrational state in collision with He. The calculations are based on new two-dimensional potential energy surfaces obtained from highly correlated \textit{ab initio} calculations. Calculations of pure rotational (de)excitation cross sections of HCN and HNC by He were performed using the essentially exact close-coupling method. Cross sections for transitions among the 8 first rotational levels of HCN and HNC were calculated for kinetic energies up to 1000 cm1^{-1}. These cross sections were used to determine collisional rate constants for temperatures ranging from 5 K to 100 K. A propensity for even Δj\Delta j transitions is observed in the case of HCN--He collisions whereas a propensity for odd Δj\Delta j transitions is observed in the case of HNC--He collisions. The consequences for astrophysical models are evaluated and it is shown that the use of HCN rate coefficients to interpret HNC observations can lead to significant inaccuracies in the determination of the HNC abundance, in particular in cold dark clouds for which the new HNC rates show that the j=10j=1-0 line of this species will be more easily excited by collisions than HCN. An important result of the new HNC-He rates is that the HNC/HCN abundance ratio derived from observations in cold clouds has to be revised from >>1 to \simeq1, in good agreement with detailed chemical models available in the literature.Comment: 8 figue

    Quantum Energy-Transport and Drift-Diffusion Models

    We show that Quantum Energy-Transport and Quantum Drift-Diffusion models can be derived through diffusion limits of a collisional Wigner equation. The collision operator relaxes to an equilibrium defined through the entropy minimization principle. Both models are shown to be entropic and exhibit fluxes which are related with the state variables through spatially non-local relations. Thanks to an � expansion of these models, � 2 perturbations of the Classical Energy-Transport and Drift-Diffusion models are found. In the Drift-Diffusion case, the quantum correction is the Bohm potential and the model is still entropic. In the Energy-Transport case however, the quantum correction is a rather complex expression and the model cannot be proven entropic.

    Outcomes, infectiousness, and transmission dynamics of patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis and home-discharged patients with programmatically incurable tuberculosis: a prospective cohort study.

    BACKGROUND: The emergence of programmatically incurable tuberculosis threatens to destabilise control efforts. The aim of this study was to collect prospective patient-level data to inform treatment and containment strategies. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study, 273 South African patients with extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis, or resistance beyond extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis, were followed up over a period of 6 years. Transmission dynamics, infectiousness, and drug susceptibility were analysed in a subset of patients from the Western Cape using whole-genome sequencing (WGS; n=149), a cough aerosol sampling system (CASS; n=26), and phenotypic testing for 18 drugs (n=179). FINDINGS: Between Oct 1, 2008, and Oct 31, 2012, we enrolled and followed up 273 patients for a median of 20·3 months (IQR 9·6-27·8). 203 (74%) had programmatically incurable tuberculosis and unfavourable outcomes (treatment failure, relapse, default, or death despite treatment with a regimen based on capreomycin, aminosalicylic acid, or both). 172 (63%) patients were discharged home, of whom 104 (60%) had an unfavourable outcome. 54 (31%) home-discharged patients had failed treatment, with a median time to death after discharge of 9·9 months (IQR 4·2-17·4). 35 (20%) home-discharged cases were smear-positive at discharge. Using CASS, six (23%) of 26 home-discharged cases with data available expectorated infectious culture-positive cough aerosols in the respirable range (<5 μm), and most reported inter-person contact with suboptimal protective mask usage. WGS identified 17 (19%) of the 90 patients (with available sequence data) that were discharged home before the diagnosis of 20 downstream cases of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis with almost identical sequencing profiles suggestive of community-based transmission (five or fewer single nucleotide polymorphisms different and with identical resistance-encoding mutations for 14 drugs). 11 (55%) of these downstream cases had HIV co-infection and ten (50%) had died by the end of the study. 22 (56%) of 39 isolates in patients discharged home after treatment failure were resistant to eight or more drugs. However, five (16%) of 31 isolates were susceptible to rifabutin and more than 90% were likely to be sensitive to linezolid, bedaquiline, and delamanid. INTERPRETATION: More than half of the patients with programmatically incurable tuberculosis were discharged into the community where they remained for an average of 16 months, were at risk of expectorating infectious cough aerosols, and posed a threat of transmission of extensively drug-resistant tuberculosis. Urgent action, including appropriate containment strategies, is needed to address this situation. Access to delamanid, bedaquiline, linezolid, and rifabutin, when appropriate, must be accelerated along with comprehensive drug susceptibility testing.
